A2.3.4 — Static and Dynamic Routing

Preview

IB DP Computer Science — A2 Networks — Data transmission | HL | A2.3.4

📋 What You Will Learn

  • Explain the process of static routing and trace a packet through static routing tables
  • Explain the process of dynamic routing and the meaning of convergence
  • State the advantages and disadvantages of each approach
  • Compare them across configuration, maintenance, complexity, resource usage, convergence, scalability and network size
  • Justify a routing choice for a given network scenario

🗺️ Why This Matters Static routing is a set of printed road signs: utterly predictable, zero running cost — and blind to a closed road until a worker replaces every sign. Dynamic routing is sat-nav with live traffic: it re-plans around problems by itself, at the price of constant chatter and computation.

📝 Note — Where routing happens in a LAN This is AHL content building on A2.3.3. A LAN of any size is segmented into subnets and VLANs (A2.2.4); routers (or
