A1.2.3 — Logic Gates: Purpose and Use

Preview

IB DP Computer Science — A1 Computer fundamentals — Data representation and computer logic | SL | A1.2.3

📋 What You Will Learn

  • Describe the purpose of logic gates and their role in binary computing
  • State the function of each Boolean operator: AND, OR, NOT, NAND, NOR, XOR, XNOR
  • Recognise each gate's standard symbol and write its Boolean notation
  • Give the exact output of every gate for every input combination
  • Describe applications of gates in computer systems: arithmetic, comparison, control, memory

🚪 Why This Matters A club door with two bouncers who both must nod is an AND gate; a door that opens if either nods is an OR gate. Computers make every "decision" — adding numbers, comparing passwords, deciding whether to branch — by wiring millions of such tiny yes/no decision-makers together.

Purpose: Hardware That
