AUSTRALIA'S GO8 POWERHOUSE — BRISBANE
The University of Queensland Admissions Guide for International Students
The University of Queensland sits on the Brisbane River at St Lucia, blending century-old sandstone with some of the most cutting-edge research infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific. A founding member of Australia's Group of Eight research universities, UQ has produced Nobel laureates, pioneered the Gardasil cervical cancer vaccine, and trained generations of scientists, engineers, and business leaders who now operate across Australia and Southeast Asia.
Australian undergraduate admission is grades-first. No personal essays, no teacher recommendations, no extracurricular portfolios. UQ assesses your academic qualification — IB Diploma, A-Levels, or national equivalent — against entry thresholds for your chosen program. If you have the academic results, UQ will seriously consider you. With a QS ranking of #40 globally and a national standing as Australia's 4th university, a UQ degree carries real weight in an increasingly Asia-Pacific-oriented world.

WHY UQ
Why Choose UQ — Research, Brisbane & Asia-Pacific Reach
The University of Queensland is not just one of Australia's best universities — it is one of the most strategically located research institutions in the Asia-Pacific, positioned in a city that is rapidly becoming a global hub. Here is what sets UQ apart for ambitious international students.
SELECTIVITY
UQ Acceptance Rate & Academic Profile Who Gets In
UQ's overall acceptance rate reflects its position as a broad-intake research university offering hundreds of programs across engineering, science, business, health, law, and humanities. However, selective admission to specific programs — particularly Medical Sciences, Biomedical Science, Law, and competitive Engineering pathways — is significantly more demanding. For international students, admission is always grades-first.
Australian universities do not use a holistic admissions model. Entry is determined by academic qualification alone: your IB Diploma total, A-Level grades, or equivalent, converted to a competitive entry score. The IB minimum entry score at UQ is 34 points as an indicative threshold — though competitive programs in health sciences and law require scores well above this floor. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee admission to high-demand programs.
AT A GLANCE
University of Queensland — Quick Facts
HOW TO APPLY
UQ Application — Direct International Pathway
International students who completed their secondary schooling outside Australia apply directly to UQ via the online application portal at apply.uq.edu.au — not through QTAC (the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre, which handles domestic applicants). The process is straightforward: academic qualification + supporting documents + application fee.
WHAT UQ WANTS
What UQ Admissions Looks For — Grades-First, Qualification-Based
UQ's undergraduate admissions process is transparent, merit-based, and consistent. Academic performance is the primary — and usually only — determinant of admission. Unlike US or UK universities, UQ does not conduct holistic review or weight personal qualities, extracurricular achievement, or essays for standard undergraduate entry.
For international students, your qualification (IB Diploma, A-Levels, or national leaving certificate) is assessed against UQ's entry requirements for your chosen program. Each program has a minimum entry score and a competitive cut-off — for popular programs these can be significantly higher than the minimum. Subject prerequisites must be satisfied independently of your overall score.
KEY DATES
Application Deadlines — Semester 1 & Semester 2
UQ accepts international applications for two intakes each year. Semester 1 (February start) is the primary intake with the widest program availability. Semester 2 (July start) is available for many but not all programs. Apply well before the published deadlines — international student visa processing adds 4–8 weeks after your offer is made.
Deadlines are indicative based on published UQ guidance. Some programs close earlier. Always verify current-cycle dates at study.uq.edu.au — they are updated annually and vary by program.
| Intake | Programs | Deadline | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Semester 1 (February) | All undergraduate programs | 30 November (prior year) | Primary intake; largest program selection |
| Semester 2 (July) | Most undergraduate programs | 31 May (same year) | Mid-year intake; check program availability |
| Rolling consideration | Some programs | Up to 2 years in advance | Early applications accepted — apply early for competitive programs |
LIFE AT UQ
Student Life — St Lucia, Brisbane & Beyond Campus, City & Community
The University of Queensland's main St Lucia campus is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in Australia. Sandstone heritage buildings and tree-lined walkways sit alongside world-class research facilities and student hubs, all on a peninsula formed by a bend in the Brisbane River. The campus is a destination in itself — with its own lake, Great Court, and extensive sporting facilities.
Brisbane is a city on the rise. Warm subtropical climate, growing arts and food scenes, direct access to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, and the momentum of being an Olympic host city (2032) create an energy that is increasingly drawing international students who want quality of life alongside academic excellence. St Lucia is 7 km from the Brisbane CBD, connected by bus and ferry — the river ferry to the city is a five-minute ride.
CAREER OUTCOMES
Graduate Employment & Career Prospects Outcomes in Australia & Globally
UQ graduates are highly sought by employers across Australia and internationally. The university's research-intensive environment, strong industry partnerships in biomedical science, mining engineering, agriculture, and technology, and its Go8 brand create genuine career advantages in Australia's most competitive employment markets.
UQ's industry connections are particularly strong in sectors where Queensland and Australia have global significance: biomedical and pharmaceutical research, resources and mining engineering, environmental and agricultural science, and financial services. International graduates benefit from Australia's Post-Study Work visa, which allows up to 4 years of work rights after graduation from a research university.

COMMON QUESTIONS
University of Queensland — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to write personal essays to apply to UQ?+
No. For standard undergraduate admission, UQ does not require personal essays, a statement of purpose, or recommendation letters. Admission is based on academic results. Some programs — particularly those with supplementary requirements (auditions, interviews, portfolios) — may have additional components. Check individual program pages.
What IB score do I need for UQ?+
The indicative minimum IB Diploma score for UQ undergraduate entry is 34 points. However, this is a floor — competitive programs in health sciences, law, and engineering require scores above this minimum. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee entry to high-demand programs. Subject prerequisites must be satisfied independently.
How do I apply to UQ as an international student?+
International students whose senior schooling was outside Australia apply directly to UQ via apply.uq.edu.au — not through QTAC, which handles domestic applicants. The application requires academic transcripts, proof of English proficiency, a passport copy, and the application fee.
Can I apply for Semester 2 (mid-year) entry?+
Yes. Most UQ undergraduate programs offer a Semester 2 (July) intake with a 31 May application deadline. Not all programs are available for mid-year entry — check individual program pages to confirm. Semester 1 (February) offers the widest selection of programs and the most available places.
Does UQ offer scholarships for international undergraduate students?+
Yes. The UQ International Excellence Scholarship provides a 25% tuition fee reduction per semester for the full duration of your program, awarded automatically to competitive applicants — no separate application required. The International Onshore Merit Scholarship (A$10,000) is available for international students who completed a prior qualification in Australia.
What is the Post-Study Work visa and does UQ qualify?+
Australia's Post-Study Work visa (subclass 485) allows international graduates to work in Australia after their studies. Graduates of Go8 universities like UQ are eligible for up to 4 years of work rights — a significant advantage that makes the UQ degree valuable not just academically but in terms of Australian employment pathways.
Is Brisbane safe and liveable for international students?+
Brisbane consistently ranks as one of the world's most liveable cities. It has a warm subtropical climate, low crime rates relative to global peers, a compact and navigable size, and a large international student community. The St Lucia campus area is particularly student-friendly.
What English score do I need for UQ?+
For most undergraduate programs: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (no band below 6.0), TOEFL iBT 87, or Duolingo English Test 120. Some programs have higher requirements. Students whose entire secondary education was in English may qualify for an exemption. Always check the specific program page for exact requirements.
ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS
UQ Academic Profile — What International Students Need
UQ's admissions system is refreshingly transparent: your academic qualification is the primary criterion. Understanding how your IB Diploma, A-Level grades, or national qualification converts, which subject prerequisites are non-negotiable, and what scores are genuinely competitive for your target program is the foundation of a successful UQ application.
Unlike US and UK holistic admissions, UQ evaluates your academic results against program-specific entry requirements. The system rewards genuine academic achievement. There are no essays to craft, no extracurricular lists to compile — only results that speak for themselves. For the highest-demand programs, those results must be excellent.
ENTRY BENCHMARKS
Academic Entry Requirements by Program
UQ uses your qualification's equivalent entry score as the primary admissions criterion. The IB Diploma total (out of 45) and A-Level grades map directly to UQ's competitive entry thresholds. The indicative minimum IB entry of 34 applies broadly — but individual program competitiveness varies significantly. The table below reflects general indicative ranges; always verify current entry requirements on UQ's program pages.
IB scores above are indicative ATAR-equivalency estimates. UQ publishes minimum entry scores annually — verify current requirements at programs-courses.uq.edu.au before applying. Entry scores change each cycle based on applicant pool.
| Degree | Ib Indicative | Competitiveness | Math Required |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) | 34–38 (indicative) | Moderate to competitive | Yes — Mathematics required |
| Bachelor of Science | 34–36 (indicative) | Moderate | Yes for most majors |
| Bachelor of Business Management | 34–36 (indicative) | Moderate | Recommended |
| Bachelor of Biomedical Science | 36–40+ (indicative) | Highly competitive | Yes — Chemistry and Biology required |
| Bachelor of Laws (LLB) | 38–40+ (indicative) | Highly competitive | No |
| Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honours) | 36–40 (indicative) | Competitive | Yes — Chemistry required |
STANDARDISED TESTING
SAT, ACT & UQ's Standardised Test Policy Not the Primary Criterion
The University of Queensland does not require the SAT or ACT for international undergraduate admission. Entry is determined by your secondary qualification — your IB total, A-Level grades, or national leaving certificate. Standardised test scores are not part of the standard UQ application.
This is a fundamental distinction from the US university admissions model. At UQ, your Year 12 or equivalent final academic performance is what matters. If you are completing an IB Diploma or A-Levels, your results in those qualifications are your application. You do not need to sit SAT or ACT tests to apply to UQ — and taking them will not compensate for weaker academic results in your primary qualification.
IB & A-LEVELS AT UQ
IB Diploma & A-Level at UQ — Benchmarks & Prerequisites
UQ has well-established conversion processes for both the IB Diploma and GCE A-Levels. Both are fully recognised and competitive entry qualifications. Understanding what your IB total or A-Level grades equate to in UQ's system — and which subjects are required — is essential preparation.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE
English Language Requirements for UQ
All international students must demonstrate English proficiency through an approved test. UQ accepts IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo English Test, PTE Academic, Cambridge C1 Advanced, and C2 Proficiency. The minimum scores below apply to most undergraduate programs — some programs with higher communication demands (e.g. Law, Education) require scores above these levels.
Test results must typically be no more than 2 years old at the time of application. Students who completed all of their secondary schooling with English as the sole medium of instruction may be eligible for an English proficiency waiver — check UQ's waiver criteria before sitting a test.
| Test | Overall | Subscore | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 | No band below 6.0 | Most popular test for UQ applicants |
| TOEFL iBT | 87 | Writing 21+ | Accepted for all programs |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 | No subscore minimum published | Accepted as equivalent |
| PTE Academic | 61 | No subscore below 54 | Accepted for most programs |
SUBJECT PREPARATION
Subject Prerequisites & Academic Preparation
UQ's entry requirements include program-specific subject prerequisites. These are different from your overall entry score — you must satisfy the prerequisite subjects regardless of your total IB points or A-Level grades. Planning your subject selection from Year 11 is essential.
YEAR-BY-YEAR ROADMAP
Building Your Academic Profile for UQ — Year 9 to 12
For an international student targeting UQ, the academic preparation roadmap is primarily about maximising your qualification results and meeting subject prerequisites. Unlike US admissions, extracurriculars and activities are not formally assessed — but strong academic habits built over Years 9–12 determine your outcome.
QUALIFICATION GUIDE
How UQ Reads Your International Qualification
UQ has published conversion guidelines for all major international secondary qualifications. Each system is mapped to a comparable entry score. Below is a general overview — always verify the specific conversion for your qualification and target program on UQ's official admissions pages.
AVOID THESE MISTAKES
Academic Mistakes That Cost UQ Applicants Their Offers
- Taking easier subjects to achieve a higher overall score, then failing to meet subject prerequisites for your target program. Math prerequisites for Engineering and Chemistry prerequisites for Health Sciences are firm requirements — meeting them must be planned from Year 11.
- Assuming the published minimum IB score (34) is sufficient for your chosen program. For Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Law, and other competitive programs, the effective entry score is often well above the institutional minimum. Apply with a realistic assessment of competitiveness.
- Leaving English language testing too late. IELTS and TOEFL must be arranged, sat, and processed before your application is complete. Applications are not assessed without English proficiency evidence. Plan to sit your English test by September of Year 12.
- Applying only to Semester 1 without checking Semester 2 availability. If your results arrive after November 30, a Semester 2 application (May 31 deadline) may provide a faster pathway — in many cases with equivalent program availability.
- Not researching the Post-Study Work visa implications. Go8 university graduates are eligible for up to 4 years of work rights in Australia. If a career in Australia is part of your plan, this materially changes the value calculation of your UQ degree.
- Submitting uncertified or non-translated documents. UQ requires certified copies of documents not in English to be accompanied by NAATI-accredited translations. Incomplete document sets delay offers significantly.
COST & AID
UQ Cost & Financial Aid — The Honest Picture for International Students
Studying at UQ as an international student is a significant financial commitment. Tuition fees are program-based and charged annually. Total cost of attendance — tuition plus living in Brisbane — runs approximately USD $52,000 per year. However, UQ offers automatic merit scholarships that reduce fees for competitive applicants, and Brisbane is meaningfully more affordable than Sydney or Melbourne.
Australia does not have need-blind financial aid in the US sense — UQ does not meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for international undergraduates. Aid comes primarily through merit scholarships with automatic consideration at application. Understanding the real cost and available offsets before you apply is essential.
ANNUAL COST ESTIMATE
UQ Annual Cost of Attendance — International Students
All figures are indicative annual estimates in USD. Tuition fees vary by program — Engineering, Medicine, and Law programs may have different tuition structures. Fees increase annually. Always confirm current fees on the specific program page at programs-courses.uq.edu.au.
| Item | Usd | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fees (annual, indicative) | ~$33,000 | Program-based; varies by degree |
| Accommodation (on/off campus) | ~$10,000–$14,000 | Part of total cost of attendance |
| Living expenses (food, transport, personal) | ~$7,000–$9,000 | Part of total cost of living estimate |
| Total estimated annual cost | ~$52,000 | Total cost of attendance estimate |
| Application fee (non-refundable) | ~$75 | Per program application |
| Student Services & Amenities Fee | ~$280 | Annual; mandatory for all students |
FINANCIAL AID POLICY
Financial Aid for International UQ Undergraduates
UQ does not operate a need-based financial aid programme equivalent to US elite universities. There is no mechanism by which UQ will 'meet 100% of demonstrated financial need' for international undergraduate students. Financial support comes primarily through merit-based scholarships, which reduce tuition fees but do not typically cover living expenses.
International students should plan to self-fund the majority of their UQ education through family savings, home-country student loans, government sponsorships from their home country, or external scholarships from organisations in their home country. Australian government scholarships (Australia Awards) are available for students from eligible developing nations and are separate from UQ institutional awards.
Students from eligible developing countries should investigate Australia Awards Scholarships — a highly competitive but fully-funded Australian government scholarship programme covering tuition, living expenses, and return airfares for postgraduate study and some undergraduate programmes.
UQ SCHOLARSHIPS
Scholarships for International Undergraduate Students
UQ offers several merit-based scholarships specifically for international undergraduate students. The most significant are awarded automatically at the time of application — no separate essay or application is required. Below are the key scholarships available to international undergraduates.
AFFORDABILITY
The Net Cost Reality — Brisbane vs Sydney vs Melbourne
Brisbane is meaningfully more affordable than Australia's two largest cities, and this materially affects the real cost of a UQ degree. For international students comparing Go8 universities, the cost differential between UQ (Brisbane) and comparable institutions in Sydney or Melbourne is significant.
Rental accommodation in Brisbane is typically 20–30% less expensive than equivalent housing in Sydney or Melbourne. Food, transport, and daily living costs follow a similar pattern. When combined with the UQ International Excellence Scholarship (25% tuition reduction for competitive applicants), the total net cost of a UQ education can be substantially lower than the headline figures suggest. The estimated cost of living in Brisbane is approximately USD $17,000 per year — meaningfully below comparable estimates for Sydney or Melbourne.
Cost comparisons are qualitative estimates. Individual costs vary significantly based on accommodation choices, lifestyle, and exchange rates. Always budget conservatively when planning your finances.

COST QUESTIONS
UQ Cost & Scholarships — Frequently Asked Questions
Does UQ offer full scholarships for international undergraduates?+
Full scholarships (covering tuition and living) are not a standard UQ institutional offering for undergraduates. The Australia Awards Scholarships programme (Australian government) provides fully-funded awards for eligible students from developing countries. UQ's own scholarships primarily reduce tuition fees — the most significant is the International Excellence Scholarship (25% fee reduction), which is automatically assessed.
What is the UQ International Excellence Scholarship worth?+
The scholarship provides a 25% reduction in tuition fees each semester for the full duration of your program. On an annual tuition cost of approximately USD $33,000, this represents a reduction of roughly USD $8,250 per year. No separate application is required — eligible applicants are automatically assessed when they apply to UQ.
How much does it actually cost to live in Brisbane as a student?+
The estimated annual cost of living in Brisbane for an international student is approximately USD $17,000. This covers accommodation, food, transport, health cover, and personal expenses. Brisbane is noticeably more affordable than Sydney or Melbourne — a meaningful advantage when comparing Go8 universities.
Do international students pay higher tuition than domestic students at UQ?+
Yes — significantly higher. Domestic Australian students pay lower tuition rates through the Commonwealth-supported system and HECS-HELP loans. International students pay full international fees, which represent the actual cost of tuition. The indicative annual tuition for international undergraduates is approximately USD $33,000, varying by program.
Can I work while studying at UQ?+
Yes. Australian student visas (subclass 500) permit up to 48 hours of work per fortnight during semester and unlimited work during university breaks. Many UQ international students work part-time — Brisbane's job market for students is active, particularly in hospitality, retail, tutoring, and on-campus roles.
Is there need-based financial aid at UQ?+
Not in the US sense. UQ does not meet demonstrated financial need for international undergraduates. The International Student Scholarship exists for students experiencing unexpected temporary financial hardship during their studies — it is not an admissions-stage need-based award. Plan your finances assuming full self-funding with scholarships as a potential offset.
ESSAYS & APPLICATIONS
UQ Applications — The Honest Truth About Essays in Australian Admissions
If you are preparing for university applications from an international perspective — particularly if you have been focused on US or UK universities — the most important thing to understand about UQ is this: there are no personal essays for standard undergraduate admission. Australian undergraduate entry is grades-first. Your IB total, A-Level grades, or equivalent qualification determine your place — not your personal narrative.
This does not mean writing skills are irrelevant to your UQ journey. Scholarship applications, program-specific supplementary requirements, and your future graduate-entry ambitions (Medicine, Law) will all involve written components. Understanding which written materials actually matter — and when — is the foundation of your preparation.
WHAT UQ ACTUALLY REQUIRES
What Written Material Does UQ Actually Require?
UQ's undergraduate application does not ask you to write a personal essay, a statement of purpose, or a 'why UQ' response for standard program entry. The application form collects factual information — your qualifications, contact details, program preference — and supporting documents. The written components of a UQ application are minimal.
The only written element you will produce for the standard UQ international undergraduate application is accurate completion of the application form itself. This includes selecting your program correctly, entering your qualification details accurately, and providing any context required for your documents. There are no prompts about your background, motivations, or character.
SCHOLARSHIP WRITING
Writing for UQ Scholarship Applications
While standard UQ undergraduate admission requires no personal writing, the UQ Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship — worth $12,000 AUD per year for up to 5 years — requires a formal written application demonstrating outstanding leadership and community service achievements. If you are eligible (Year 11 and 12 completed in Australia, ATAR 99.90+ equivalent), this is the most significant writing you will do in your UQ application process.
Scholarship writing in the Australian university context is more achievements-based and less narrative than US college essays. You are being asked to demonstrate specific achievements in specific categories — leadership and community service — with concrete evidence. Abstract personal reflections carry less weight than documented outcomes and measurable impact.
FUTURE PATHWAY — GRADUATE ENTRY
Building Writing Skills for Graduate Entry (Medicine, Law, Dentistry)
If your goal is Medicine, Law, or Dentistry at UQ — all of which are graduate-entry programs — your undergraduate years are the foundation for the written applications those pathways require. The personal statements and interviews for graduate-entry health and law programs are substantive and competitive. Build the foundation now.
The Doctor of Medicine (MD) at UQ requires a competitive GPA (typically 5.5–6.0 out of 7.0 on the Australian scale), a strong GAMSAT score, and a personal statement that articulates your motivations for medicine with clarity and specificity. The same discipline — concrete, honest, specific writing — applies. The Juris Doctor (JD) at UQ Law School similarly requires a competitive undergraduate GPA and demonstrated analytical writing ability.
IF YOU NEED TO WRITE — STRATEGY
Writing Principles for Australian University Applications
When written material is required for UQ — scholarship applications, supplementary program components, or graduate entry down the track — the principles of effective writing for Australian admissions differ meaningfully from the US personal essay model.
AVOID THESE MISTAKES
Application & Writing Mistakes for UQ Applicants
- Applying to UQ through QTAC when you completed your schooling outside Australia. International students whose secondary education was overseas apply directly through UQ's application portal at apply.uq.edu.au, not through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre.
- Treating the absence of essays as a reason to underinvest in application preparation. The time saved on essay writing should be redirected to maximising your academic results and preparing a complete, accurate application document set.
- Missing the English language test requirement. Your application cannot proceed to assessment without valid English proficiency results. Sit your IELTS or TOEFL early — by September of Year 12 — to ensure results are available before the 30 November Semester 1 deadline.
- Submitting a scholarship application for the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship without genuine documented leadership achievements. The scholarship committee is experienced at identifying inflated claims. Only apply if your achievements in leadership and community service are substantive, documented, and meet the ATAR 99.90+ equivalent threshold.
- Not understanding that the UQ International Excellence Scholarship requires no separate application. Many strong applicants fail to be considered because they believe a separate scholarship application is required. It is not — every eligible international applicant is automatically assessed.
- Applying for graduate-entry Medicine or Law expecting to write your way into the program. Graduate entry at UQ is GPA-dominant. A 6.0+ GPA (out of 7.0) is the practical floor for competitive Medicine applications. Plan your undergraduate academic strategy around that target from Year 1.
- Writing a personal statement or motivation letter that was not requested. Some international applicants attach unsolicited personal statements to their UQ application because they are familiar with this from other university systems. Unless specifically requested by your program, unsolicited written material does not influence the assessment and is unnecessary.
WRITING QUESTIONS
UQ Essays & Applications — Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to write a personal essay to get into UQ?+
No. Standard undergraduate admission to UQ does not require a personal essay, statement of purpose, or any written personal statement. Admission is based on academic qualification alone. Some programs have supplementary requirements (auditions, portfolios, interviews) — check your specific program page.
Is there a 'Why UQ' essay?+
No. UQ does not ask for a 'Why UQ' essay or any motivational writing as part of the standard international undergraduate application. If you wish to indicate program fit, program-specific supplementary requirements (where they exist) are the appropriate place — not an unsolicited attachment.
What writing is required for the Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship?+
The Vice-Chancellor's Scholarship requires a written application documenting outstanding achievements in leadership and community service from Years 11 and 12. Applications open in August and close in November. You must have completed Years 11 and 12 in Australia and meet an ATAR 99.90 equivalent or higher. Contact scholarships@uq.edu.au for current cycle details.
How is the UQ International Excellence Scholarship awarded?+
No written application is required. All eligible international applicants are automatically assessed when they submit a program application. Awards are made to the most academically competitive offer holders in each cohort. You will be notified with your offer letter if you have been selected.
I am applying for a music or arts program — do I need to write anything?+
Music and fine arts programs at UQ may require an audition or portfolio alongside your academic qualification. Written statements may be requested as part of the supplementary application for these programs. Check the specific program page — supplementary requirements are listed there.
If I want to eventually do Medicine at UQ, when does writing start to matter?+
Writing becomes important at the graduate-entry stage. The UQ Doctor of Medicine (MD) requires a GAMSAT score (which includes a Section II written component requiring analytical essays) and a personal statement as part of the application. During your undergraduate degree, build writing skills through your academic coursework and research activities. The GAMSAT Section II tests your ability to construct a clear, well-evidenced argument in writing — start practising in Year 2 or 3 of your undergraduate degree.
Should I attach a personal statement even if UQ hasn't asked for one?+
No. Unless your specific program requests a written personal statement, do not attach one. Unsolicited personal statements are not assessed as part of the standard UQ admission process and their inclusion will not strengthen your application.
I am applying to UQ Law — is there any written component?+
The undergraduate Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at UQ does not require a written personal statement for international undergraduate admission. It is grades-based. If your goal is the Juris Doctor (JD — graduate entry law degree), a competitive GPA, LSAT score, and personal statement will be required at that later stage.
