WHY HKUST
Five Reasons to Choose HKUST
SELECTIVITY
HKUST Acceptance Rate & Admissions Profile
HKUST admits approximately 33% of international applicants, making it selective but not impossible — context matters enormously. The university reviews your full qualification profile (IB, A-Level, SAT/ACT, national exams), predicted grades, personal statement, and referee report holistically. Strong STEM or business academic records with genuine co-curricular depth make the strongest cases.
SAT/ACT scores are not required but may strengthen an application — see the Academics tab for test strategy.

HKUST Quick Facts
APPLICATION COMPONENTS
What Your HKUST Application Must Include
HKUST uses a direct online application portal — there is no Common App, UCAS, or centralised system. You build and submit your application at join.hkust.edu.hk, and can select up to two programme choices in priority order.
WHAT HKUST VALUES
The Profile HKUST Actually Admits
HKUST is primarily an academic meritocracy — your grades and examination performance carry the most weight. But the personal statement and referee report matter more than many students assume, particularly for competitive programmes like Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, and Business Administration.
APPLICATION TIMELINE
HKUST Application Deadlines 2025–2026 Cycle
HKUST runs three intake rounds for international qualification holders. Applying in the Early Round gives you the best scholarship consideration and allows time to plan your visa and relocation well ahead of the September start.
Application fee is HKD 600 (approximately USD 60). The application portal is at join.hkust.edu.hk.

| Late Round | 30 June 2026 | July–August 2026 | Limited places; fewer scholarships available |
CAMPUS & CITY LIFE
Student Life at HKUST & Hong Kong
Non-local students are guaranteed on-campus housing in their first year. University residences are modern, affordable, and central to social life — most student clubs, sports teams, and informal networks form around hall culture. HKUST has over 100 student societies covering everything from robotics and entrepreneurship to dragon boat racing and cultural exchange. The annual HKUST Entrepreneurship Competition and the Robotics Team are among the most respected extracurricular institutions.
HKUST's campus is one of the most striking in Asia — a hillside complex overlooking Clear Water Bay, with sea views from lecture theatres and hiking trails on your doorstep. The Scale of the campus creates an intimate community within a globally connected city.
Hong Kong itself is a 40-minute ride from campus. The city offers unrivalled access to professional networks, internships at global banks and tech firms, a vibrant food scene, and connections across mainland China and the rest of Asia. Cost of living is high by regional standards, but manageable with on-campus housing and disciplined budgeting.
CAREER OUTCOMES
What an HKUST Degree Delivers
For those bound for graduate study, HKUST alumni regularly gain admission to top PhD programmes at MIT, Stanford, Oxford, and leading Asian research universities. The HKUST Business School MBA is consistently ranked among the best in Asia, and many undergraduates stay for an accelerated master's before entering the workforce.
HKUST graduates are among the most sought-after in the Asia-Pacific talent market. Employers including Goldman Sachs, McKinsey, Deloitte, HSBC, JPMorgan, Huawei, Tencent, and DJI recruit directly on campus. The university's location in Hong Kong creates a natural pipeline into Greater Bay Area tech and finance — one of the world's fastest-growing economic corridors.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HKUST FAQs for International Applicants
Is English the language of instruction at HKUST?+
Yes — all undergraduate teaching at HKUST is conducted in English. You will attend lectures, submit assignments, and sit exams in English. Cantonese is spoken widely in Hong Kong life around campus, but you do not need it to study or live at HKUST.
Do I need a student visa for Hong Kong?+
Students from most countries need a student visa (or no-objection letter) to study in Hong Kong. HKUST provides detailed guidance and a support letter once you receive an offer. Apply early — the Early Round deadline helps give you more time to arrange this before September.
Can I apply to more than one programme?+
Yes. You may select up to two application choices (programme or school-based entry) and rank them in priority order. Your first choice receives priority consideration.
Is accommodation guaranteed?+
Non-local students are offered on-campus housing in their first year. Subsequent years are allocated by ballot. Some students rent off campus in Sai Kung or Clearwater Bay from Year 2 onwards.
How is HKUST different from HKU and CUHK?+
HKUST is the youngest of Hong Kong's top three research universities and the most focused on STEM and business. It is widely regarded as the strongest in Engineering and Computer Science and ranks highest in Asia for business. HKU is more comprehensive and medicine-centric; CUHK emphasises the arts and social sciences alongside sciences.
Are SAT or ACT scores required?+
No. HKUST has a test-optional policy for international applicants. You may submit SAT or ACT scores if you believe they strengthen your application, but they are not required. IB, A-Level, and other qualification-based evidence are the primary academic indicators.
What are my chances with an IB of 36?+
The facts benchmark is IB 38+. A score of 36 is not automatically disqualifying, but it means other elements of your application — your personal statement, referee report, and any significant achievements — need to work harder. Programme choice also matters: some school-based entry routes are more flexible than competitive named programmes.
Is financial aid available to international students?+
HKUST offers merit scholarships automatically to strong applicants. Need-based financial assistance is available through the Scholarships & Financial Aid Office (sfao.hkust.edu.hk), though the scale is more limited than at US need-blind institutions. Most international students fund their study through a combination of merit scholarships, family support, and part-time work.
ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS
What HKUST Expects Academically
HKUST is a research-intensive university with high academic standards across all four schools. For international students, understanding how your qualifications translate — and how to present your academic profile strategically — is the foundation of a strong application.
The academic bar at HKUST is genuinely high, particularly in competitive STEM programmes. At the same time, HKUST is not purely grade-driven: the personal statement, referee report, and evidence of depth beyond the classroom matter in borderline cases and for scholarship consideration.
ACADEMIC PROFILE
HKUST Admissions Academic Benchmarks
These are indicative benchmarks. HKUST evaluates all applicants holistically — your profile as a whole matters, not any single metric in isolation.
TEST POLICY
SAT / ACT Policy at HKUST
If you have sat the SAT or ACT and scored well, submitting scores can serve as supplementary evidence of academic ability — particularly useful if your predicted grades are at the lower end of the competitive range. A strong SAT Math score may reinforce your candidacy for Engineering or Computer Science programmes. If your scores do not clearly add value, simply do not submit them.
HKUST has a test-optional policy for international applicants. Standardised test scores (SAT, ACT) are not required and will not put you at a disadvantage if not submitted. Your IB Diploma, A-Level, or other national qualification is the primary academic evidence HKUST considers.
SAT / ACT
Standardised Tests — Strategy for HKUST
Because SAT/ACT is optional at HKUST, test preparation should be a lower priority than maximising your IB or A-Level performance. If you choose to submit, here is how to think about it:
IB & A-LEVEL
How HKUST Reads IB, A-Level & Other Qualifications
HKUST accepts over 50 national qualification systems and is particularly experienced with IB Diploma and GCE A-Level applicants, who make up a significant proportion of the international intake.

ENGLISH PROFICIENCY
English Language Requirements at HKUST
Since all teaching at HKUST is in English, demonstrating English proficiency is mandatory unless you are exempt (e.g., your qualification is already in English, such as IB in English, A-Level, or SAT).
| Test | Minimum | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall | No sub-score minimums stated; balanced profile expected |
| TOEFL iBT | 80 | Internet-based test total score |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 | Accepted as alternative to IELTS/TOEFL |
| IB English (HL/SL) | Grade 4+ | May satisfy English proficiency requirement |
| A-Level English | Grade C or above | Typically satisfies the requirement |
| SAT Evidence-Based Reading | Varies | Strong performance may satisfy — confirm with admissions |

COMMON MISTAKES
Academic Application Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing too many Higher Level subjects that spread your effort thin — for HKUST, depth in core STEM subjects beats breadth in IB.
- Applying to Engineering with a weak or standard-level Mathematics background — HL Maths AA (or Further Maths) is strongly preferred for most Engineering programmes.
- Submitting a mediocre SAT score hoping it helps — test-optional means not submitting is fine; a below-average score can only hurt.
- Leaving the personal statement as a generic statement of ambition rather than a specific engagement with your programme and HKUST's research culture.
- Not nominating your referee early — the online system requires the referee to submit separately, and this takes time.
- Missing the Early Round and losing both scholarship priority and lead time for your Hong Kong student visa.
- Applying to two closely similar programme choices when the university already knows your first preference — use your second choice for a genuine alternative (different school or programme).
COST & FINANCIAL AID
The Real Cost of Studying at HKUST
HKUST is a competitive-cost destination for a top-50 global university — significantly less expensive than comparable US or UK peers. Non-local tuition is approximately USD 27,500 per year, with total cost of attendance around USD 41,000 including living. Merit scholarships can reduce this substantially for top applicants.
Hong Kong is an expensive city by Asian standards, but campus accommodation and disciplined budgeting make it manageable. International students are permitted to work part-time in Hong Kong under certain visa conditions, which can help offset living costs.
COST BREAKDOWN
Annual Cost Estimate for Non-Local Students (2026/27)
Off-campus housing in Hong Kong (Sai Kung, Tseung Kwan O) from Year 2 can cost HKD 4,500–18,000/month, which would raise living costs significantly. Budget carefully if moving off-campus.
| Component | Annual Usd | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition Fees | ~USD 27,500 | Non-local rate (approx HKD 215,000) |
| On-Campus Housing | ~USD 2,500–4,300 | Guaranteed first year; varies by hall type |
| Living & Personal Expenses | ~USD 7,700 | Food, transport, books, personal costs |
| Health Insurance | Included / low | Basic university cover; confirm on enrolment |
| Application Fee | ~USD 60 | One-time; HKD 600 |
| Total Cost of Attendance (Est.) | ~USD 41,000 | Annual estimate; varies with lifestyle and housing |
FINANCIAL AID POLICY
Financial Aid for International Students
Need-based financial assistance is available for students experiencing financial difficulties during their studies through the Scholarships & Financial Aid Office (sfao.hkust.edu.hk). The scale is more limited than at US need-blind institutions, and most international students fund their degree through merit scholarships, family support, and (where permitted) part-time work.
HKUST's financial aid model for international undergraduates is merit-first. All applicants are automatically considered for academic merit scholarships based on their qualifications at the time of application — no separate scholarship application is needed for the standard merit awards. There is no published need-blind financial aid programme equivalent to US elite universities.
NAMED SCHOLARSHIPS
Key HKUST Scholarships for International Students
HKUST offers several scholarship programmes for non-local undergraduates. Most merit-based awards are automatic — you do not need a separate application — but some competitive awards require you to apply in the Early or Main Round.
NET PRICE REALITY
Is HKUST Affordable for International Families?
Students without scholarships should plan for approximately USD 41,000 per year for four years (~USD 164,000 total). Students with a competitive profile should apply in the Early Round and submit the BAAS application — many strong applicants receive significant award reductions. Part-time work in Hong Kong (permitted under student visa with conditions) can offset living costs but should not be relied upon as a primary funding source.
Compared to top US and UK universities, HKUST offers strong value. At approximately USD 41,000 total annual cost (including living), it is substantially less expensive than Oxbridge (~£35,000+ per year all-in) or most top US privates (~USD 80,000+). A partial merit scholarship of even 20–30% makes HKUST competitive on cost with any comparable global option.

COST FAQS
Cost & Scholarships — Common Questions
How does HKUST tuition compare to US or UK peers?+
HKUST's non-local tuition (~USD 27,500/year) is substantially less than top US privates (USD 55,000–65,000/year) and somewhat less than Oxbridge or UCL for non-EU students. When factoring in cost of living, HKUST is highly competitive on value for a top-50 global university.
Do I need to apply separately for merit scholarships?+
No — the University Admissions Scholarships, Olympiad Medalist scheme, and Global Learners Scholarship are automatically considered when you submit your admissions application. The BAAS and Future Leaders Award require separate scholarship applications alongside your main application.
Can I work part-time while studying in Hong Kong?+
Non-local students on a student visa may work in Hong Kong under certain conditions — consult HKUST's immigration guidance and the Hong Kong Immigration Department. Part-time work opportunities exist in tutoring, campus jobs, and hospitality, but should be treated as supplementary income, not a primary funding source.
Is on-campus housing guaranteed throughout my degree?+
First-year non-local students are guaranteed on-campus accommodation. Beyond first year, allocation is by ballot and is not guaranteed. Plan for the possibility of renting off-campus from Year 2, which will increase living costs.
What is the application fee?+
The application fee is HKD 600 (approximately USD 60). This is non-refundable and must be paid when submitting your application.
APPLICATION STATEMENT
Your HKUST Personal Statement — What It Is and Why It Matters
HKUST's application includes a single personal statement of up to 4,000 characters. There is no fixed prompt — you decide what to write. While grades and predicted results carry the most weight in HKUST decisions, the personal statement is your only direct voice in the application, and it becomes critical when decisions are close.
Unlike US universities that use multiple supplemental essays to probe different dimensions of your character, or UK universities that use the UCAS personal statement to demonstrate academic motivation, HKUST gives you open space. That openness is both a freedom and a challenge: many applicants write generic statements that waste the opportunity. The guidance in this tab helps you use those 4,000 characters strategically.
APPLICATION SYSTEM
How HKUST Applications Actually Work
HKUST uses a DIRECT application system — not Common App, UCAS, or any centralised platform. You apply through HKUST's own online portal at join.hkust.edu.hk, selecting up to two programme choices. The personal statement is submitted as part of this application.
THE PERSONAL STATEMENT
The HKUST Personal Statement — What to Actually Write
HKUST does not specify a prompt or content requirements for the personal statement. The university's guidance simply asks you to explain your reasons for applying. In practice, successful personal statements do the following:
WRITING STRATEGY
Writing a Personal Statement That Actually Works for HKUST
Start with the 'why this subject' question, not the 'who am I' question. HKUST admissions are primarily academic — they want to know that you understand what you are signing up for and have genuine intellectual preparation for it. A Computer Science applicant who can describe a specific programming project, what it taught them, and how that connects to their interest in AI or distributed systems at HKUST will outperform an applicant who simply states a love of computers and lists prizes.
The HKUST personal statement is fundamentally different from a US Common App essay or a UK UCAS statement. It sits in a category of its own: open, direct, and programme-focused. Here is how to approach it.
4,000 characters is roughly 600–700 words — similar in length to a UCAS personal statement. That is not a lot of space. Every sentence should earn its place. Cut anything generic that could apply to any university.
STATEMENT STRUCTURE

TOPIC SELECTION
Choosing What to Write About — HKUST Edition
Because there is no fixed prompt, topic selection is everything. The best HKUST personal statements are anchored in academic and intellectual content, not personal narrative for its own sake.
COMMON PITFALLS
Essay Mistakes That Cost HKUST Applicants
- Writing a statement so generic it could apply to any university — never mentions HKUST, Hong Kong, or anything specific to the programme chosen.
- Using the full 4,000 characters on personal history and biography rather than intellectual engagement with the subject.
- Opening with 'Since childhood, I have been fascinated by...' — the most over-used opening in all of global admissions.
- Claiming skills or research experience without being specific about what you actually did, found, or concluded.
- Writing for two very different programme choices without acknowledging or bridging them — if you apply to CS Engineering and Business Administration, at least acknowledge the connection.
- Ignoring the adviser/referee brief — your referee report and personal statement should complement each other. Brief your referee on the themes and examples you are using.
- Submitting in the Main or Late Round without having refined the statement from your initial draft — the extra weeks between Early and Main Round are for improvement.
- Poor structure — one long paragraph is harder to read than a well-organised statement with clear intellectual progression.
STATEMENT FAQS
Personal Statement — Common Questions
Is there a specific prompt for the HKUST personal statement?+
No. HKUST asks you to explain your reasons for applying but does not set a specific prompt or content requirements. You have full freedom over what to write, within the 4,000-character limit.
Should I write about both of my programme choices?+
If your two choices are in the same discipline or school, one coherent statement usually works. If they are quite different (e.g., Computer Science and Business Administration), consider briefly acknowledging both and framing an intellectual connection — or write primarily for your first choice.
Does the personal statement matter if my grades are strong?+
For borderline decisions and scholarship competitions, yes — significantly. For exceptional candidates (IB 42+, Olympiad medals), it matters less but still helps the university understand who you are and confirm genuine programme fit.
Can I mention specific professors or research groups at HKUST?+
Yes, and doing so credibly is one of the strongest signals you can send — it shows you have done real research into HKUST's academic offering. Only mention if you have genuinely looked at their work; vague namedropping is detectable.
What language should the personal statement be written in?+
English — HKUST teaches entirely in English and the application is conducted in English. Make sure your statement is well-written, clear, and does not rely on overly formal or flowery language that makes it harder to read.
How different is this from a UCAS personal statement?+
Very similar in format and length, but with one key difference: UCAS statements go to multiple universities simultaneously and must be more general; HKUST's statement goes to one institution, so you can and should be specific about HKUST and Hong Kong.
Should I get my personal statement professionally edited?+
Light proofreading for grammar and clarity is sensible. Substantive editing that changes your voice significantly can create inconsistency with your other application materials and referee report. The statement should sound like you — an intelligent, motivated student — not like a polished marketing document.
