Why SUSTech — Research, Innovation & Shenzhen Advantage

SUSTech is not a traditional Chinese university. It was designed from the ground up to be different — with smaller classes, international faculty, English-medium instruction, and a culture of research from Year 1. In barely fifteen years it has become one of the most compelling research universities in Asia for ambitious international students.

01Fastest-Rising University in China
Founded in 2011, SUSTech entered QS World Rankings top 300 in under a decade and holds national rank #28. In the Nature Index it placed among the world's top 25 — an extraordinary achievement for a university this young.
02Research From Day One
Every undergraduate joins a research lab in Year 1 under a dual-advisor system. The university operates 106 research platforms including 3 national-level centres, 3 Nobel Laureate Labs, and a Cryo-Electron Microscopy Centre.
03English-Friendly Environment
Most teaching materials are in English and many courses are delivered in English, making SUSTech one of the most accessible Chinese research universities for international students who do not yet speak Mandarin.
04Shenzhen — China's Innovation Capital
SUSTech sits in Nanshan District, the heart of Shenzhen's tech belt, adjacent to global headquarters of Huawei, Tencent, DJI, BYD, and ZTE — giving students unparalleled internship and career access.
05Small Cohorts & Low Student-Faculty Ratio
With approximately 11,000 students and a 9:1 student-to-faculty ratio, SUSTech is significantly smaller and more personal than most leading Chinese universities. Professors are genuinely accessible — many hold or have held positions at top Western institutions.
06Double First-Class & Top-Ranked Disciplines
SUSTech is a national Double First-Class University and ranks in the world's top 1% across nine ESI disciplines including Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, Physics, and Clinical Medicine.

SUSTech Application Components — Direct Portal, Study Plan & Supporting Documents

SUSTech uses its own international admissions portal (infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn) for all international undergraduate applications. Below is every component of a complete SUSTech application — required and optional — with strategic notes for each.

01RequiredOnline Application via Portal
International undergraduates apply through SUSTech's dedicated portal at infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn. There is no Common App, UCAS, or coalition system — all applications go through the university's own platform.
02RequiredAcademic Transcripts
Full secondary school transcripts for all years, certified and translated into English or Chinese. Minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 required. Original or notarised copies must be provided.
03RequiredProof of International Qualification
IB Diploma certificate or predicted results, A-Level certificates, AP score reports, or equivalent national leaving qualification. Official, certified copies are mandatory.
04RequiredEnglish Language Certificate
IELTS Academic (minimum 6.0) or TOEFL iBT (minimum 80) for non-native English speakers. Students from English-medium schools may apply for an exemption.
05RequiredStudy Plan / Personal Statement
A focused academic document (typically 500–800 words) explaining your research interests, academic background, reasons for choosing SUSTech, and academic goals. This is the primary written component distinguishing equally qualified candidates.
06RequiredTwo Reference Letters
Typically two letters from teachers or professors who can speak to your academic ability and research potential. Letters from mathematics, physics, or research supervisors carry the most weight for STEM programmes.
07OptionalInterview (Programme-Dependent)
Some departments and scholarship tracks include an online interview assessing academic depth, research curiosity, and communication skills. Check with your specific department or scholarship programme.

SUSTech Study Plan — Writing Your Application Statement

Tips

Write a Study Plan, not a personal narrative
SUSTech's written component is an academic document, not a US-style personal essay. Faculty reviewers want to see intellectual purpose, research motivation, and academic fit — not coming-of-age storytelling. Be direct, specific, and substantive.
Name specific faculty, labs, or research problems
A Study Plan that references a specific SUSTech research group, lab, or faculty member's work — and explains why it interests you — reads as genuine engagement. Generic plans that could apply to any university are the most common weakness in international applications.
Keep it focused and well-structured
Aim for 500–800 words. Open with your intended field and primary research interest. Follow with academic background. Explain why SUSTech specifically. Close with your goals. Chinese academic culture values clarity and precision over narrative ambiguity.
Provide concrete evidence of research orientation
Even a school science project, a competition result, or an independent coding project makes your application more credible than vague statements of interest. Describe what you did, what method you used, and what you learned — in specific terms.

Prompts

Study Plan Component 1 — Academic Background
Describe your academic background, key subjects studied, and any research, project, or competition experience relevant to your intended area of study at SUSTech.
Study Plan Component 2 — Why This Field & Why SUSTech
Explain your reasons for choosing your intended programme of study and why you are applying to Southern University of Science and Technology specifically.
Study Plan Component 3 — Academic Goals
Describe what you hope to learn and achieve during your studies at SUSTech, and what research or academic goals you have for your undergraduate years.
Study Plan Component 4 — Long-Term Vision
Where do you see yourself five to ten years after graduating from SUSTech? What impact do you hope to make in your field or society?
The most common SUSTech Study Plan mistake. Writing a generic statement that could apply to any Chinese university — instead of engaging specifically with SUSTech's labs, faculty, and research culture.

What SUSTech Admissions Is Looking For

SUSTech's admissions philosophy is grounded in intellectual curiosity, research drive, and innovative thinking rather than test scores alone. The university's motto — 'Dedicate yourself to science, innovation and entrepreneurship' — is a genuine guide to what they value in applicants. Understanding what reviewers are looking for, and why, is the foundation of a strong application strategy.

01Research Curiosity
Evidence of genuine scientific or technical curiosity — independent projects, science olympiad participation, lab experience, coding competitions, or sustained self-study in a discipline beyond school requirements. SUSTech's dual-advisor system places students in research labs from Year 1; curiosity is not optional.
02Mathematical and Scientific Rigour
Strong performance in mathematics, physics, chemistry, or biology is essential for STEM programmes. Top scores in IB HL Mathematics, A-Level Further Mathematics, or equivalent signal readiness for SUSTech's intensive curriculum. Faculty in China's leading research groups expect undergraduate-level quantitative fluency from day one.
03Innovative Thinking
SUSTech's stated mission is to cultivate innovative talent. Demonstrated ability to think beyond textbooks — through entrepreneurial projects, patents, publications, creative problem-solving, or innovation challenges like hackathons or robotics — directly signals alignment with this mission.
04Intellectual Independence
The small-class, research-first model requires students who take initiative. The dual-advisor system means you will be working with faculty researchers from Year 1. Self-directed learners who read beyond the curriculum and pursue projects independently are the archetype SUSTech is selecting for.
05Cross-Cultural Communication
Given the English-friendly campus and international faculty, strong communication skills and an ability to collaborate across cultures are integral. The Study Plan itself is read partly as a demonstration of English academic writing ability — its quality signals how you will perform in English-medium courses.
06Genuine Interest in SUSTech Specifically
Faculty reviewers can tell the difference between a specific application and a generic one. Students who research actual labs, name actual faculty, and articulate actual research problems stand out strongly from those who write 'I chose SUSTech because it is a great university.'

SUSTech Financial Aid & Scholarships for International Students

SUSTech offers financial support to international students through multiple channels: the university's own scholarship programme, the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) administered by the China Scholarship Council, and provincial and municipal scholarships from Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City. On average, approximately 40% of eligible costs are covered through available aid for recipients.

Aid amounts are estimates. Scholarship availability and amounts change annually. Always verify current-cycle information with the International Admissions Office at intladmissions@sustech.edu.cn.

Affordability Reality — Low Fees, Competitive Scholarships. SUSTech does not operate a need-blind or loan-free policy in the way that a small number of US universities do. Aid is primarily merit-based through competitive scholarships. However, the base tuition of approximately USD 4,200 per year is dramatically lower than comparable research universities in the US, UK, or Singapore — even without scholarship support, SUSTech is one of the most affordable routes to a top-ranked Asian research degree.

Key Dates

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) Deadline
Date: March (annual)
CSC Award Decisions
Date: June–July
Direct / Self-Funded Application Deadline
Date: April–May (typical)
Direct Admission Decisions
Date: June–August

Advantages

  • Full funding possible: CSC covers tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend
  • CSC is the most prestigious scholarship route for international students in China
  • Early clarity — CSC decisions come before the September intake
  • Applying for CSC signals commitment and research seriousness to the university
  • Stackable with provincial/municipal Guangdong and Shenzhen awards

Disadvantages

  • CSC deadline (March) comes before direct admission deadlines — you must be ready earlier
  • CSC is extremely competitive — plan to apply to multiple funding routes simultaneously
  • If CSC is not awarded, self-funded fees are still low (~$4,200/year tuition)
  • CSC applications require additional health certificates, notarised documents, and a detailed study plan
CSC vs Direct Application. SUSTech accepts international undergraduates through two main tracks: the highly competitive Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) route and the direct self-funded route. The right choice depends on your financial situation and how much time you have to prepare your scholarship application.
Tychr's Application Track Recommendation. Apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) if you are academically strong and need funding — it is the most comprehensive award available. Begin this process in November–December so you are fully prepared by the March deadline. Simultaneously, submit a direct application to secure your place even if CSC is not awarded. The low base tuition (~$4,200/year) means the direct track is genuinely affordable for many families even without a full scholarship.

SUSTech Interview — Format, Questions & Preparation

Not all SUSTech international applicants are interviewed — the interview is most common for competitive scholarship tracks (SUSTech Presidential Scholarship, CSC nominees) and for oversubscribed programmes such as Computer Science, AI, and Biomedical Engineering. If invited, the interview is conducted online in English by faculty from your intended department. It is an intellectual assessment, not a pastoral conversation — prepare to discuss your research interests in substantive depth.

Questions

Why did you choose SUSTech and this specific programme?
Tip: Reference specific faculty members whose work you have read, or a particular lab or research problem at SUSTech. Generic answers about 'great rankings' signal low research engagement.
Tell me about a research project or independent study you have done.
Tip: Be prepared to describe the problem, the method you used, and what you discovered — in specific terms. Interviewers are faculty; they will probe technical depth.
What specific research question would you like to explore at SUSTech?
Tip: Have a genuine, well-articulated answer. Show that you have thought about specific research problems — not just general fields like 'AI' or 'biotech'.
Explain a concept from your strongest subject that you find genuinely fascinating.
Tip: Demonstrate quantitative fluency. For STEM programmes, being able to explain a mathematical or scientific concept clearly in English is itself being evaluated.
How do you see yourself contributing to the SUSTech community beyond your own research?
Tip: SUSTech's residential college model and cross-disciplinary culture are real. Show you have thought about what you will contribute, not just what you will receive.

SUSTech Residential College System

SUSTech organises its undergraduate student life around a residential college system inspired by the Oxbridge and American liberal-arts college models. All undergraduates live on campus in residential colleges that intentionally mix students from different faculties and disciplines, building interdisciplinary connections from Year 1. Faculty tutors and advisors are embedded in the colleges, making academic and personal mentoring a daily reality rather than an office-hours appointment.

The specific college names and structure are subject to update as SUSTech continues to expand. Confirm current residential college arrangements with the International Admissions Office.

Our SUSTech Admissions Track Record & Student Success Stories

Priya S.
I had a strong IB score and research experience from a school science project, but I didn't know how to write a Study Plan that would stand out to faculty reviewers. Tychr helped me reframe my application around a specific research question in structural biology that I wanted to explore — one that referenced actual SUSTech faculty work. The interview went completely differently to what I expected; it was a genuine intellectual conversation, not a checklist.

Faqs

Do I need to speak Mandarin Chinese to study at SUSTech?+

Not for many programmes. SUSTech is one of China's most English-friendly universities, with a large proportion of course materials and lectures delivered in English. That said, learning basic Mandarin will greatly enhance your daily life in Shenzhen. Confirm the language of instruction for your specific programme with the admissions office before applying.

Is SUSTech a good choice for a research career?+

Exceptionally so. SUSTech ranked among the world's top 25 universities in the Nature Index — among the top young universities globally for research output. Every undergraduate has access to faculty-supervised research from Year 1 under the dual-advisor system, and the university's 106 research platforms include national-level centres across physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, and engineering.

How competitive is admission for international students?+

SUSTech's overall acceptance rate is approximately 30%, but this figure encompasses both domestic and international applicants. The international track is holistic and evaluates academic records, research potential, and language proficiency. An IB score of 34 or above and a GPA of 3.2/4.0 minimum are required entry benchmarks; competitive programmes in AI and CS set the bar significantly higher. Strong research experience or STEM olympiad results can substantially strengthen an application.

Is financial aid available for international students?+

Yes. The primary funding route is the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), which can cover tuition, accommodation, and a monthly stipend for eligible students. SUSTech also has its own Presidential Scholarship. On average, approximately 40% of eligible costs are covered through available aid for recipients. CSC deadlines are typically in March — apply early and to multiple funding routes simultaneously.

What is the admissions process for international undergraduates?+

International undergraduates apply through SUSTech's dedicated online portal at infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn, submitting transcripts, proof of qualification (IB, A-Level, or equivalent), English proficiency scores (IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 80 minimum), a Study Plan, and two reference letters. Some scholarship tracks and programmes include an online interview. The domestic gaokao is not required for international applicants.

Can I pursue a joint degree or international exchange?+

SUSTech offers a joint medicine programme with King's College London and has international exchange partnerships with universities worldwide. Credit transfer and exchange options vary by programme and partner institution. Contact the Global Office for current exchange and joint-degree opportunities.

What is it like to live in Shenzhen as an international student?+

Shenzhen is modern, safe, and internationally connected. It has an excellent metro system, a vibrant food scene, beaches, and a 30-minute high-speed train connection to Hong Kong. English is spoken widely in tech and commercial areas. Cost of living is estimated at approximately USD 6,500 per year — higher than inland China but very reasonable compared to Hong Kong, Singapore, or major Western cities.

How does SUSTech compare to other Chinese universities?+

SUSTech ranks #28 nationally and #265 in QS World University Rankings and #250 in THE. It is a Double First-Class University — China's designation for elite research institutions. Given it was founded only in 2011, these rankings are remarkable and reflect extraordinary research velocity. For research-oriented international students who want a genuine English-friendly environment, it is a compelling alternative to Peking University, Tsinghua, or Fudan for those who value small cohorts and direct research access over historical prestige.

GPA & Academic Record

SUSTech and GPA — What the Requirements Show

The honest picture: SUSTech publishes a minimum GPA of 3.2/4.0 for international applicants. In practice, competitive applicants for flagship programmes in Computer Science, AI, Physics, and Chemistry typically exceed this significantly.

The minimum GPA is a baseline, not a target. What distinguishes admitted international students is the combination of strong grades in rigorous STEM subjects, demonstrated research orientation, and a compelling Study Plan that articulates specific intellectual goals.

3.2 / 4.0
Published minimum GPA for international applicants
3.5+ / 4.0
Recommended GPA for competitive STEM programmes
What this means for international students. International students from systems without a 4.0 GPA scale — IB, UK A-Levels, many Asian national curricula — are evaluated on their qualification results relative to system norms. An IB score of 34 is approximately equivalent to the 3.2 GPA minimum. A-Level AAB in relevant subjects meets the threshold for most programmes.
Grade trajectory matters. A student with an upward academic trajectory — improving from solid to strong performance across secondary school — reads positively. SUSTech is a research university selecting for intellectual potential, not just accumulated achievement. An early weaker period followed by sustained strong performance in Years 11–12 is a context, not a disqualifier, when explained in the Study Plan.

Academic Context

School Context — How SUSTech Reads International Academic Performance

SUSTech evaluates international students' academic records in the context of their specific school system and qualification type. Admissions reviewers are experienced with major international curricula — IB, A-Level, AP, CBSE/ISC, and major Asian national systems.

How SUSTech contextualises academic records
Every application is evaluated relative to the specific curriculum the student completed. A student from a school with access to full IB Diploma is evaluated differently from one who completed a national leaving certificate with fewer options. What matters is how the student challenged themselves relative to what was available — not an absolute comparison across different systems.
What this means practically
For STEM-focused students, taking the most mathematically and scientifically rigorous option available at your school is more important than achieving slightly higher grades in easier courses. An IB student who takes HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches alongside HL Physics demonstrates research readiness that a student who chose HL Mathematics: Applications does not — even at the same point total.
For students at less well-known international schools. Students from less internationally recognised schools should ensure their Study Plan provides clear context for their academic environment — what courses were available, what the school's academic culture is, and how their performance compares within that context. Reference letters from teachers can provide this contextual framing effectively.

SAT — Test-Optional

SAT Scores at SUSTech — What You Actually Need

SUSTech is test-optional for international undergraduates. SAT scores are not required. No official SAT score band is published for international admits. If you choose to submit SAT scores, they are treated as supplementary supporting evidence.

LabelScorePercent
Official minimum SATNot published0
Recommended if submitting1400+75
Math subscore (STEM programmes)720+80
The SAT Math subscore. For STEM-focused applicants, a strong SAT Math subscore (720–800) demonstrates quantitative readiness that complements IB or A-Level results. If your school curriculum does not lead to an internationally recognised qualification, SAT scores — particularly Math — provide useful standardised evidence for the admissions team.
Should you prepare for the SAT?. If your primary qualifications (IB, A-Level) are already strong and recognised, there is no strategic need to sit the SAT for a SUSTech application. Focus your preparation time on IELTS/TOEFL scores and the Study Plan instead.
Submitting vs. withholding SAT scores. Submit SAT scores if: (a) you have scores of 1400 or above, particularly with a strong Math subscore, and (b) your other academic evidence is relatively thin — for example, if you completed a national curriculum that SUSTech reviewers may be less familiar with. Do not submit scores below 1300 — they add nothing and may draw attention to a weaker academic dimension.

ACT — Test-Optional

ACT Scores at SUSTech — Low Strategic Priority

ACT scores are not required at SUSTech and no official ACT benchmarks exist for international admits. The ACT carries even less weight than the SAT for SUSTech applications, as its Science section is primarily relevant to the US curriculum context.

Comparison Cards

Both accepted, neither required
Neither SAT nor ACT is required. IB, A-Level, and national qualification results are the primary academic evidence for international applicants.
SAT has marginally more utility
If your primary qualification is an unrecognised national curriculum, SAT Math may be more useful as standardised evidence than ACT.
English proficiency is separate
IELTS and TOEFL are the prioritised English tests for SUSTech. Do not substitute SAT Reading for IELTS/TOEFL — they serve different purposes.
Score reporting. SUSTech does not publish superscore policies because standardised test scores are not a primary evaluation factor. If submitting ACT scores, your highest composite sitting is most relevant.
Tychr's recommendation. For most international applicants to SUSTech, preparing for the SAT or ACT is not the best use of your pre-application time. Prioritise: (1) IB/A-Level performance, (2) IELTS or TOEFL preparation, (3) research or STEM competition engagement, (4) writing a specific, well-researched Study Plan.

Testing Strategy

SUSTech Test-Optional Policy — What It Means for International Applicants

SUSTech's test policy for international applicants is test-optional. SAT and ACT scores are not required for admission. The primary academic evidence is your international qualification (IB Diploma, A-Level, AP, or national leaving certificate) combined with your official transcripts.

Submit Items

Your primary qualification is a national curriculum less familiar to Chinese university reviewers (e.g., certain African, South American, or Central Asian leaving certificates) — SAT Math evidence helps.
Your SAT score is 1400 or above with a strong Math subscore (720+), particularly for STEM applications.
You have the scores already and they do not detract from your profile.

Withhold Items

Your IB Diploma or A-Level results are strong and internationally recognised — they provide sufficient academic evidence.
Your SAT score is below 1300 or ACT below 29 — submitting adds no value and may suggest weakness.
Preparing for SAT/ACT would take time away from IELTS/TOEFL preparation or research engagement, both of which matter more for SUSTech.
Current test policy. SUSTech evaluates international undergraduate applicants primarily on high-school transcripts, recognised international qualifications, English proficiency tests (IELTS/TOEFL), a Study Plan, and reference letters. Standardised tests (SAT/ACT) may be submitted and can support an application — particularly for students from less internationally recognised school systems — but their absence does not disadvantage applicants with strong IB, A-Level, or AP records.
The misconception. Some applicants assume that submitting more documents — including optional tests — signals thoroughness. At SUSTech, an IELTS score above 6.5, a well-researched Study Plan, and strong IB/A-Level results carry far more weight than an average SAT score added to an already complete file. Quality of evidence matters more than volume.

IB and A-Levels at SUSTech — Specific Benchmarks

IB Diploma
Note: For IB applicants: SUSTech is familiar with the IB Diploma from its international faculty and student body. The IB's research components — Extended Essay and Internal Assessments — are seen as direct evidence of the research orientation SUSTech values. An EE in a science subject with a good grade adds meaningful context to a STEM application.

  • {"label":"Extended Essay","value":"Science or mathematics EE at A or B grade viewed positively as research evidence"}
A-Levels
Note: A-Level applicants: SUSTech accepts A-Level results from UK and international centres. Predicted grades are taken into account for applicants whose final results are not yet available at the time of application. Strong AS-Level or mock results supporting the predicted profile help the case.

Advanced Placement

AP Courses at SUSTech — What Counts and What to Take

Advanced Placement (AP) scores are accepted by SUSTech as part of an international qualification profile. For students in the US curriculum or at AP-offering schools worldwide, a strong AP portfolio in relevant subjects can support admission — particularly when combined with strong high-school GPA.

What SUSTech looks for in AP applicants
AP 4s and 5s across relevant STEM subjects — Calculus BC, Physics C: Mechanics, Physics C: E&M, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science A, Statistics. The pattern of AP choices should reflect the programme you are applying to.
How many APs?
No official number is specified. Competitive applicants typically present 4–8 AP exams with predominantly 4s and 5s in STEM subjects. Subject relevance matters more than count.
Grade validity signal
AP scores can partially confirm GPA validity — a student with a strong GPA supported by AP 5s demonstrates that the grades reflect genuine academic mastery, not grade inflation.
SUSTech does not publish a formal AP credit transfer policy for international students in the way some US universities do. Confirm with your department whether AP scores can exempt you from introductory courses.
International students whose school curriculum does not include AP should not artificially sit AP exams just for SUSTech. Your IB or A-Level qualification is the appropriate evidence for your context, and it will be evaluated accordingly.

Academic Rigour

Rigour of Secondary School Record — SUSTech's Core Academic Signal

SUSTech values the rigour of your secondary school record. For a research-first STEM university, this means taking the most challenging mathematics and science courses available at your school — not grade optimisation through easier options.

Taking the most challenging STEM courses available at your specific school, in the subjects most relevant to your intended research area.

The contextual element. Rigour is always evaluated relative to what was available. A student at a school that offers only standard-level IB Mathematics is evaluated differently from one who had access to HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches and chose it. What matters is whether the student challenged themselves relative to what was possible.
What rigour means at a research university. For SUSTech specifically, academic rigour in mathematics and science carries particular weight. The university's research culture is demanding — courses move at pace and expect university-level problem-solving from the first semester. Admissions reviewers know this and select accordingly.
What SUSTech is looking for. A student who took HL Mathematics: AA, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry simultaneously in IB demonstrates the scientific ambition SUSTech's curriculum rewards. For A-Level applicants, Mathematics + Further Mathematics + a science is the strongest signal. At the AP level, Calculus BC + Physics C + Chemistry is the equivalent profile.

STEM Preparation

Mathematics and Science Preparation — What SUSTech Expects

SUSTech is primarily a STEM research university. Even for programmes outside core STEM, a strong quantitative and analytical foundation is expected. For flagship programmes, the mathematical and scientific preparation expected from admitted students goes significantly beyond standard secondary school curricula.

Mathematics
Non-negotiable for physics, engineering, computer science, and materials science. HL Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (IB) or A-Level Further Mathematics is ideal. Exposure to proof-based mathematics and statistics beyond the standard curriculum — through olympiads, competitions, or university-level online courses — signals readiness for SUSTech's research environment.
Physics & Chemistry
Core prerequisites for Physics, Chemistry, and Materials Science programmes. SUSTech's science faculty publish in Nature and Science — their undergraduates start at a high level. Prepare for university-level problem-solving from the first semester. HL sciences at IB or A-Level A*/A grades are the entry baseline.
Computer Science & Biology
For Computer Science and AI programmes, programming experience (Python, C++, Java) is expected rather than optional. Competitive programming participation (ICPC, Codeforces, USACO) is a strong differentiating signal. For Biomedical Engineering and Life Sciences, strong Biology at HL/A-Level is essential alongside chemistry.

English Language Requirements

English Language Proficiency — Requirements for International SUSTech Applicants

Non-native English speakers must provide IELTS or TOEFL results as part of the international admissions process. These are mandatory requirements, not optional supplements — no application without English proficiency evidence will be considered unless a waiver has been granted.

The Study Plan you submit is itself an English language demonstration. A Study Plan with grammatical errors, unclear academic writing, or poor sentence structure undermines the application regardless of test scores. Take your English proficiency preparation seriously — both for the test and for the quality of your written application materials.

Test: IELTS Academic
Score: 6.0 overall
Test: TOEFL iBT

Test: English-Medium Waiver
Score: Case by case
Practical guidance beyond the minimum. The published minimums — IELTS 6.0 and TOEFL 80 — are entry thresholds, not competitive targets. Many courses at SUSTech are delivered in English, seminars and lab meetings operate in English, and your academic social life will partly function in English. Aim for IELTS 6.5–7.0 or TOEFL 90–100 to be fully comfortable in the academic environment.

International Education Systems

SUSTech and International Education Systems — How Your Curriculum Is Evaluated

IB Diploma
Well understood and valued. SUSTech's international faculty and student body create familiarity with the IB curriculum. The EE and IAs are taken seriously as research-readiness indicators. HL subject choices are evaluated for intellectual ambition, not just grade totals.
A-Levels (Cambridge and Edexcel)
Accepted and evaluated positively. A-Level results are the primary qualification for UK-system students applying to SUSTech. Subject combination and grade profile are both carefully considered. Predicted grades are accepted with strong contextual support.
Indian Boards (CBSE / ISC)
Accepted and evaluated case by case. For CBSE/ISC applicants, high scores (90%+ in relevant subjects) and supplementary evidence — JEE performance, science olympiads, research projects — strengthen the case significantly. Contact the admissions office to confirm how your specific result is assessed.
Other National Leaving Certificates
Evaluated alongside other evidence. National leaving certificates from African, Southeast Asian, and Middle Eastern school systems are accepted. Strong scores in mathematics and sciences, combined with a compelling Study Plan and reference letters, are the most important elements for less internationally familiar qualifications.
Chinese Gaokao / National Curriculum
Domestic Chinese students apply through the gaokao system. International students who hold Chinese high school certificates but have been studying abroad for less than the required period should clarify their status with the admissions office, as separate rules may apply.

Common Pitfalls

Academic Mistakes That Weaken SUSTech Applications — And How to Avoid Them

Underestimating the mathematical intensity
SUSTech's STEM programmes move at pace from the first semester. Do not apply to Engineering, Physics, or Computer Science without HL or A-Level Mathematics preparation. A student with IB HL Mathematics: Applications instead of Analysis and Approaches signals insufficient quantitative preparation for a research physics or engineering programme.
No research or competition engagement
SUSTech is a research university. An application that is purely academic — strong grades, no projects, no competitions, no evidence of self-directed curiosity — misses the point. Even a brief summer project or competition participation signals the mindset the university values.
Treating English proficiency as a checkbox
Meeting IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL 80 is the minimum entry requirement — not a competitive score. Many courses are English-medium. Aim for IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 90+. And the Study Plan itself must demonstrate strong academic English writing — meeting the test threshold but submitting a poorly written Study Plan is self-defeating.
Not verifying the language of instruction
Some programmes at SUSTech are primarily Chinese-medium at the undergraduate level. Verify the language of instruction for your specific programme before applying. If the programme requires Mandarin proficiency, you will need HSK scores or equivalent evidence.
Missing scholarship deadlines
Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) deadlines (typically March) come significantly before standard university application deadlines. Missing the CSC deadline means paying full fees. Plan scholarship applications first — they are the critical path.
Submitting a generic Study Plan
A Study Plan that says 'I am interested in artificial intelligence' without naming a specific problem, research group, or faculty member is generic and weak. Faculty reviewers who receive hundreds of Study Plans can immediately identify the ones that show genuine engagement with SUSTech's actual research identity.

Illustrative Profiles

What Academic Profiles Work for SUSTech — Illustrative Examples

The following profiles illustrate the academic backgrounds of students Tychr has helped gain admission to SUSTech or comparable research universities in China and Asia. They show the range of academic preparation that works — and what made each compelling.

Profile 1 — STEM Focus (IB)
HL Mathematics AA (7), HL Physics (6), HL Chemistry (6). Self-directed research project on solar cell efficiency using Python data modelling. Regional physics olympiad finalist.
Stats: IB 37 · IELTS 6.5 · Physics olympiad finalist
Takeaway: The academic profile met the benchmark but was not exceptional by itself — the independent research project and olympiad result demonstrated genuine scientific orientation and elevated the application.
Profile 2 — CS Focus (A-Level)
A-Level Mathematics (A*), Further Mathematics (A*), Physics (A). Competitive programming: ICPC Asia regional participant. Active GitHub with machine learning projects.
Stats: A-Levels A*A*A · TOEFL 94 · ICPC participant
Takeaway: The mathematics profile was the strongest element; the competitive programming participation and portfolio directly evidenced CS aptitude and research orientation for the AI programme.
Profile 3 — Indian Curriculum, CSC Route
CBSE Class 12: 94% aggregate, 97 in Mathematics, 95 in Physics. School science project on plant disease classification using CNNs. Applied for CSC scholarship simultaneously.
Stats: CBSE 94% · IELTS 6.5 · CSC applicant
Takeaway: The national curriculum profile was strong but required supplementary evidence — the CNN project was the differentiating element. Simultaneous CSC application resulted in a full-funding offer.

Faqs

Is a 3.2 GPA enough for SUSTech?+

A GPA of 3.2/4.0 is the published minimum. For competitive programmes in AI, CS, Physics, and Chemistry, competitive applicants typically have GPAs of 3.5 or above, combined with strong qualification results (IB 36+ or A-Level A*AA) and research or competition engagement.

What IB score do I need for SUSTech?+

An IB score of 34 is the published minimum benchmark. For flagship STEM programmes, competitive applicants typically have 36–40+ points, with strong HL scores in Mathematics and relevant sciences. The EE and IAs in science subjects add useful research-readiness signals.

Do I need SAT or ACT scores for SUSTech?+

No. SUSTech is test-optional for international undergraduates. IB Diploma, A-Level, AP, and other recognised qualifications provide the primary academic evidence. If you have strong scores (1400+ SAT, particularly in Math), submitting can add supplementary value — but the absence of scores does not disadvantage applicants with recognised international qualifications.

What IELTS or TOEFL score does SUSTech require?+

IELTS Academic 6.0 overall or TOEFL iBT 80 total are the minimum requirements. Students from schools where English was the primary language of instruction may be eligible for a waiver — confirm with the admissions office. Scoring above the minimum (IELTS 6.5–7.0, TOEFL 90+) is strongly recommended for comfort in English-medium courses.

How long should the Study Plan be?+

No fixed word count is published, but 500–800 words in English is the practical norm for the Study Plan / Personal Statement. Be direct and substantive — faculty reviewers value intellectual depth and specificity over length. Structure it around: academic background, why this field and why SUSTech, research goals, and long-term vision.

Cost & Financial Aid

SUSTech May Be More Affordable Than You Think — Here Is the Full Picture.

SUSTech's tuition is approximately USD 4,200 per year — dramatically cheaper than comparable research universities in the US, UK, or Singapore. Combined with the Chinese Government Scholarship and the university's own awards, a significant proportion of international students receive substantial financial support. Here is exactly what SUSTech costs and how to access every available funding route.

Financial Aid Policy

Financial Aid for International Students at SUSTech — How It Works

Unlike the small number of US universities that offer need-blind, no-loan aid to all international students, SUSTech's financial support is primarily merit-based and scholarship-driven. The good news: the low base tuition means the financial barrier is dramatically lower than Western peers even without scholarship support.

How SUSTech Aid Differs from US Universities. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is the most comprehensive funding route and can cover virtually the full cost of attendance. SUSTech's own Presidential Scholarship provides additional university-funded support. Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City offer supplementary awards. The key difference from US need-based models: awards are competitive and merit-driven, not automatic for all admitted students.
What Happens After Admission. Scholarship applications are separate from the admission application and often have earlier deadlines (CSC: March; direct applications: April–May). Being admitted does not automatically confer scholarship funding — you must apply separately for each funding source.
Merit-Based Scholarships for International Students
SUSTech does not operate need-blind admissions or a guaranteed full-need coverage policy for international students. Financial support is available through competitive scholarships. Approximately 40% of eligible costs are covered for scholarship recipients on average.

International Aid Detail

SUSTech Financial Aid for International Students — How It Works

SUSTech's approach to international student funding is scholarship-driven rather than need-based. The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC) is the flagship programme; the university's own Presidential Scholarship and provincial/municipal awards complement it. Here is how international aid works in practice.

The Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
The CSC is administered by the China Scholarship Council (Ministry of Education). It is the most comprehensive international student scholarship in China, covering tuition, accommodation, comprehensive medical insurance, and a monthly living stipend (approximately RMB 2,500/month for undergraduates). Applications go through csc.edu.cn and require a university nomination.
SUSTech Presidential Scholarship
SUSTech's own merit-based award for high-achieving international applicants. Specific amounts and coverage vary annually — contact intladmissions@sustech.edu.cn for the current cycle. This award is separate from and can be stacked with provincial and municipal awards.
Guangdong Province & Shenzhen City Awards
Both Guangdong Province and Shenzhen City offer additional scholarships for international students enrolled at institutions within their jurisdictions. These are smaller awards but can supplement the primary scholarship to reduce net cost further.
What the CSC Actually Covers
Based on published information from the China Admissions platform: full CSC coverage for undergraduates typically includes tuition (~$4,200/year), dormitory, insurance, and a living stipend — effectively covering the full estimated cost of attendance (~$11,400/year) for recipients.

Aid figures are approximate estimates based on published CSC programme information and university data. Actual award amounts change annually — verify current-cycle amounts with the admissions office.

Unlike US universities with nuanced income-band formulas, SUSTech's aid is primarily binary: either you secure a competitive scholarship (CSC, Presidential, or provincial) or you pay the self-funded rate of ~$11,400/year. The self-funded rate is still extremely low by global standards.

GrantIncomeContribution

Merit-Based Aid

SUSTech Scholarships — Who Qualifies and How Awards Are Made

SUSTech's financial aid model is merit-based rather than need-based. Scholarships are awarded on academic achievement, research potential, and application quality — not calculated from family income in the way US need-based aid is.

What merit-based means in practice
A student with a strong academic record and compelling Study Plan will be more competitive for a CSC or Presidential Scholarship than one with higher family income but weaker academic evidence. Financial need is not the primary criterion.
Why a strong application IS the funding strategy
Because scholarships are merit-based and competitive, strong preparation of the entire application — not just the financial aid form — is the funding strategy. The Study Plan, reference letters, and academic qualifications that drive admission also drive scholarship competitiveness.
Admission and scholarship are separate
The CSC programme and university scholarships are separate applications, each with its own process and deadline. Submit to both to maximise funding probability. Do not assume admission implies scholarship funding — they are independent processes.
Supplementary provincial and municipal awards
Guangdong provincial and Shenzhen city awards are typically smaller in value but can supplement a partial scholarship. Contact the International Admissions Office for current availability and eligibility — these change annually.

External Funding

External Scholarships — Additional Funding for SUSTech-Bound Students

Beyond SUSTech's own awards and the CSC, international students may also be eligible for scholarships from their home countries, international foundations, and subject-specific awards. These can supplement university and government scholarships to reduce the net cost further.

Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC)
Primary full-funding route; apply at csc.edu.cn with SUSTech as host university; March deadline
Guangdong Government Scholarship
Provincial award for international students at Guangdong universities; partial funding; verify annually
Shenzhen City Scholarship
Municipal supplementary award; smaller value; stackable with provincial awards
Home Government Scholarships
Many countries offer citizens scholarships for study at Chinese universities — research your home country's scholarship landscape (examples: Indian ICCR, African Union scholarships, Indonesian LPDP)
Tychr's scholarship database: As part of every full admissions programme for SUSTech and China-bound students, Tychr identifies external scholarship opportunities relevant to the student's country of origin, intended field, and academic profile.
Stacking scholarships: SUSTech does not publicly specify whether external scholarships reduce the value of internal awards dollar-for-dollar. Clarify with the Financial Aid / Scholarship Office whether external awards supplement or replace university grants.
Country-specific government scholarships: Several countries have bilateral scholarship agreements with China that support citizens studying at Chinese institutions including SUSTech. These vary enormously by country — Tychr advises relevant students on home-country scholarship routes alongside the CSC application.

Loan Policy

SUSTech Loan Policy — No Institutional Loans; Grant and Scholarship Funding Only

SUSTech does not operate a loan-based financial aid programme. There are no institutional student loans offered by the university to international students. Financial support comes entirely in the form of non-repayable scholarships and grants — or, for self-funded students, the low base tuition of approximately USD 4,200 per year.

What this means
A student who receives a CSC scholarship receives grant funding that does not need to be repaid. When they leave SUSTech, they leave with a degree and no institutional debt from their SUSTech education.
For self-funded students
For self-funded international students, the annual cost of approximately USD 11,400 (tuition + living) is a genuine out-of-pocket cost. Some families take personal loans in their home countries to fund this — but the low fee structure means the total four-year cost (~USD 45,600) is manageable compared to Western alternatives.
Alternative income: limited part-time work
While SUSTech does not offer institutional student loans, international students in China may be eligible for limited part-time work under certain visa conditions. Off-campus work requires special authorisation. Part-time work should be treated as supplementary income only — it is not a primary funding strategy.

Student Employment

Student Employment at SUSTech — What International Students Should Know

SUSTech does not operate a formal work-study programme equivalent to what US universities offer. However, students can earn income through on-campus roles and, with appropriate visa authorisation, limited off-campus work.

  • Teaching assistant and tutoring roles (subject to academic performance)
  • Research assistant positions in faculty labs (provides both income and research experience)
  • Administrative and student services roles in the Global Office
  • Student ambassador and admissions event roles
  • Entrepreneurship and startup activities through the School of Innovation
On-campus employment opportunities are available to enrolled international students. Income from on-campus roles is modest but can supplement living costs. Research assistant positions are particularly valuable — they provide income while simultaneously building your research profile for graduate school applications.
Income from on-campus work is supplementary rather than a primary funding mechanism. The low base living cost in Shenzhen (~$6,500/year) means that even modest on-campus income can meaningfully offset living expenses.
Work is entirely optional for students with scholarship support. For self-funded students, on-campus roles can meaningfully reduce the net cost of attendance. Visa restrictions on off-campus work are a real constraint — verify current Chinese student visa regulations before counting on off-campus income.

For self-funded SUSTech students, the low base tuition makes the cost comparison very favourable against most Asian and Western peers — even without scholarship support.
For research-oriented students from families with limited ability to pay high Western tuition, SUSTech is one of the most compelling value propositions in global higher education: a top-300 global research university, English-friendly, in one of the world's most dynamic tech cities, at approximately USD 11,400/year all-in.

True Cost Analysis

SUSTech vs. Alternatives — What You Actually Pay

For a self-funded international student, SUSTech at ~$11,400/year is one of the most affordable routes to a top research university in Asia — cheaper than NUS/NTU, far cheaper than UK or US peers. For a CSC scholarship recipient, the effective cost is near zero: a top-ranked research experience in one of the world's most dynamic cities, fully funded.

Scholarship Appeals & Alternatives

What to Do If Your Scholarship Application Is Unsuccessful

SUSTech does not operate a formal need-based financial aid appeals process in the way US universities do. However, if your scholarship application was unsuccessful, there are several productive steps to take.

The honest note: scholarship competition at SUSTech is intense and some qualified applicants are not funded in a given cycle. The low self-funded tuition (~$4,200/year) means the financial gap is far smaller than at Western universities — for many families, self-funding at SUSTech is more affordable than a scholarship to a mediocre Western institution.

How To Appeal

  • Contact the International Admissions Office (intladmissions@sustech.edu.cn) to ask whether any additional scholarship rounds or alternative awards are available
  • Inquire about the Guangdong Province or Shenzhen City awards if you did not apply to those separately
  • Ask whether your CSC application can be reconsidered under a different quota or in the following cycle
  • Explore home-country government scholarships for citizens studying in China — these are independent of SUSTech's process

When To Appeal

  • You received an admission offer but your CSC application was unsuccessful
  • Your financial circumstances have changed since initial application
  • You believe your scholarship application contained an error or was incomplete
  • A new scholarship round opens that you had not previously applied for
SUSTech's response timeline varies. Contact the International Admissions Office directly and specifically — ask whether there are additional scholarship opportunities for your intake year, whether waitlist positions exist, and what supplementary funding options the university can signpost.

Timeline & Planning

Planning for SUSTech Costs — What to Do and When

Understand the full cost picture
Timeframe: Grade 10–11
Research the total cost of attendance (~$11,400/year) and scholarship availability. Calculate whether the self-funded route is within your family's means, and identify which scholarship routes (CSC, Presidential, Guangdong) you will pursue. Build your application timeline backwards from the March CSC deadline.
Prepare CSC documentation
Timeframe: Grade 12, November–December
Gather all required CSC documents: health certificate, certified transcripts, notarised translations, study plan, and reference letters. The health certificate in particular requires a medical examination at an approved clinic — allow 4–6 weeks lead time.
Submit CSC application
Timeframe: Grade 12, February–March
Complete the CSC application online at csc.edu.cn. Select SUSTech as your host university and submit all required documentation before the March deadline. Contact SUSTech International Admissions to confirm they have received and endorsed your nomination.
Submit direct admission application
Timeframe: Grade 12, April–May
Submit a parallel direct admission application at infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn even if you have applied for CSC. This ensures a place at SUSTech if scholarship decisions are delayed or unsuccessful.
Receive offers and make decisions
Timeframe: Grade 12, June–August
CSC and admission decisions typically arrive between June and August. Review all offers. If scholarship funding is partial or unavailable, confirm whether the self-funded path is financially viable before accepting. Seek supplementary Guangdong/Shenzhen awards if available.

Application & Study Plan

Applying to SUSTech — No US-Style Essays, But Your Study Plan Is Everything

SUSTech is a Chinese university and does not use the US Common Application, UCAS, Coalition, or any other third-party application platform. International undergraduate applicants apply directly through SUSTech's own online portal. There are no supplemental essays in the American sense — instead, you will write a Study Plan (sometimes called a Personal Statement or Motivation Letter), which is a focused academic document explaining your research interests, academic goals, and reasons for choosing SUSTech.

This tab explains exactly how the international application process works, what the Study Plan must contain, and how to present yourself most effectively. Do not try to write a 'college essay' in the US narrative style — the Study Plan is a different document with a different purpose and a different audience (faculty reviewers, not admissions counsellors).

Application Overview

How International Students Apply to SUSTech

International undergraduates apply through a dedicated portal at infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn. The application is reviewed by the International Admissions Office and relevant academic departments. Deadlines vary by scholarship track: Chinese Government Scholarship applications close in March; direct applications typically close in April–May. Begin the process at least 6 months before you intend to submit.

Step 1: Create an Account on the Portal
Visit infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn and register as an international undergraduate applicant. The portal guides you through the required documents section by section. Use your legal name exactly as it appears on your passport.
Step 2: Upload Academic Documents
Provide certified transcripts, proof of qualification (IB Diploma, A-Level certificates, or equivalent), and English language proficiency certificates (IELTS/TOEFL). Documents must be in English or Chinese, with notarised translations where necessary.
Step 3: Write Your Study Plan
The Study Plan is submitted as part of the online application and is the primary written component through which you distinguish yourself from other academically qualified candidates. It is read by faculty in your intended department.
Step 4: Upload Reference Letters
Arrange two reference letters from teachers or supervisors who know your academic work. Letters from mathematics, physics, or research supervisors are most valuable for STEM programmes. Give referees at least 6 weeks' notice.
Step 5: Pay the Application Fee and Submit
Pay the USD 60 application fee and submit before your track's deadline. For scholarship applicants, ensure your CSC or Presidential Scholarship application is submitted first — those have earlier deadlines (March) and require a separate process.

Study Plan

The Study Plan — What SUSTech Asks For

SUSTech's international application includes a Study Plan (sometimes called a Personal Statement or Motivation Letter). This is not a narrative personal essay in the US style — it is a focused academic document. While SUSTech does not publish a fixed prompt with a word limit in the way US universities do, the expected content is well established from faculty feedback and successful applications. Think of it as answering four core questions.

STUDY PLAN · COMPONENT 1Your Academic and Research Background
Official Text: Describe your academic background, key subjects studied, and any research, project, or competition experience relevant to your intended area of study at SUSTech.
Strategic Guide: Be specific and concrete. Name the courses you took, the results you achieved, and the skills you developed. If you have done any research project — even a school science fair or self-directed project — describe the problem you investigated, the method you used, and what you found. Avoid generic statements like 'I have always loved science.' Instead: 'In Grade 11, I built a convolutional neural network to classify plant diseases as part of a self-directed project, achieving 87% accuracy on a public dataset and learning that data augmentation was the most impactful preprocessing step.' That specificity is what faculty reviewers remember.
Source: https://infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn/index
STUDY PLAN · COMPONENT 2Why This Specific Field and Why SUSTech
Official Text: Explain your reasons for choosing your intended programme of study and why you are applying to Southern University of Science and Technology specifically.
Strategic Guide: Generic 'I chose SUSTech because it is a great university' statements are the most common weakness in international Study Plans. Research specific faculty members whose work interests you, specific labs or research groups (the Cryo-EM Centre, Nobel Laureate Labs, a particular AI or materials science group), or specific research outputs from SUSTech that are relevant to your interests. Reference the Nature Index ranking, the Shenzhen tech ecosystem, or the King's College London partnership if directly relevant. Show that you have thought carefully about why SUSTech specifically — not just any top Chinese university.
Source: https://infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn/index
STUDY PLAN · COMPONENT 3Your Academic Goals at SUSTech
Official Text: Describe what you hope to learn and achieve during your studies at SUSTech, and what research or academic goals you have for your undergraduate years.
Strategic Guide: Connect your goals to SUSTech's strengths. If studying AI, reference the availability of research in machine learning and computer vision in Shenzhen's tech belt. If biomedical engineering, mention the School of Medicine and the KCL partnership. For physics or materials science, the Nobel Laureate Labs and top-25 Nature Index position are directly relevant. Be realistic — you do not need to plan every semester, but demonstrating that you have thought about which research opportunities you would pursue makes you a more credible applicant than someone who describes general aspirations without institutional specificity.
STUDY PLAN · COMPONENT 4Your Long-Term Career and Research Vision
Official Text: Where do you see yourself five to ten years after graduating from SUSTech? What impact do you hope to make in your field or society?
Strategic Guide: You do not need a rigid plan. Articulate a direction — whether academic research, industry innovation, or entrepreneurship — and connect it back to why SUSTech's environment positions you to achieve it. Shenzhen's position as China's innovation capital, the research-from-Year-1 model, and the international faculty network are all legitimate reasons that SUSTech prepares students for specific career paths. Keep it honest and plausible rather than grandiose. 'I want to win a Nobel Prize' is less compelling than 'I want to contribute to perovskite solar cell research that makes clean energy economically viable in developing markets — a problem directly relevant to the work of SUSTech's energy materials group.'

Strategy

Study Plan Strategy — What Makes the Difference

SUSTech's Study Plan is fundamentally about research motivation and academic fit. It is read by faculty in the department you are applying to, not just an administrative admissions team. This means academic specificity and intellectual depth matter more than storytelling polish — the opposite emphasis from a US personal essay.

Aim for 500–800 words. Be direct and structured. Chinese academic culture values clarity and precision over narrative ambiguity. Open with a clear statement of your intended field and primary research interest. Follow with your most relevant academic experience and evidence of research orientation. Then explain why SUSTech specifically — name faculty, labs, or research problems. Close with your goals and vision.

Avoid clichés such as 'from a young age I have been fascinated by...', long personal backstories unrelated to academic purpose, and vague expressions of admiration for China or Shenzhen. What matters to faculty reviewers is intellectual content: what you know, what you have done, and what you want to discover — stated with precision and evidenced with specifics.

Supporting Materials

Making the Most of Supporting Materials

Beyond the Study Plan, the following components give you additional opportunities to demonstrate your profile. Each should be approached strategically, not treated as a bureaucratic requirement.

Reference Letters
Choose referees who know your academic work in depth — not the most prestigious teacher, but the one who can speak most specifically to your intellectual ability, curiosity, and work ethic. A reference from a research supervisor (even a summer programme) is particularly valuable for a research university. Provide your referees with a briefing note summarising your intended programme, research interests, and the aspects of your work you hope they will highlight. Generic reference letters — 'this student is hardworking and attentive' — do not help applications to competitive STEM programmes.
Portfolio or Research Evidence
If you have any published research, a competition award citation, a GitHub portfolio of coding projects, a patent filing, or a documented school research project, include it. SUSTech is a research university — tangible evidence of research engagement, however junior, is the single most differentiating element in international applications. A link to a GitHub repository with documented ML projects or a PDF of a science fair report are both legitimate and valued.
The Interview (If Invited)
Some scholarship tracks and competitive programmes include an online interview by faculty from your intended department. Prepare to discuss your Study Plan in depth: be ready to explain your research interests, discuss relevant scientific or technical concepts, and articulate your academic goals under questioning. Faculty interviewers look for genuine intellectual curiosity and the ability to think, not rehearsed answers. Know the work of any faculty member you named in your Study Plan well enough to discuss it substantively.

Topic Selection

What to Emphasise in Your Study Plan — By Programme

The Study Plan should be tailored to your intended programme. Here is how to think about emphasis and evidence by intended field of study.

Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence
Emphasise programming experience, projects, and algorithmic thinking. Reference a specific AI application or research problem — machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, robotics — that genuinely interests you. Competition results (ICPC, hackathons, Kaggle) or a GitHub repository of projects are strong supporting signals. Name a specific SUSTech faculty member whose AI research you find compelling and explain what you find interesting about it.
Physics, Chemistry & Materials Science
Emphasise experimental or theoretical work — lab reports, science olympiad experience, or engagement with research papers beyond the curriculum. If you have encountered a paper from a SUSTech faculty member or from the Nobel Laureate Labs and found it compelling, reference it specifically and explain what you understood and what questions it raised for you. The Cryo-EM Centre is a world-class facility — if structural biology interests you, say so and explain why.
Biomedical Engineering & Life Sciences
Emphasise the intersection of biology and engineering in your interests. If the King's College London joint medicine programme interests you, make that explicit and explain why the dual-institution pathway aligns with your long-term goals. Research into SUSTech's biomedical faculty — particularly any whose work in genomics, structural biology, or medical devices interests you — should be referenced.
Mathematics & Statistics
Emphasise your engagement with mathematics beyond standard school curricula — competition mathematics, proof-based thinking, or applied mathematical projects (data analysis, modelling). A student who has engaged with olympiad-level problems or university-level online courses in real analysis or linear algebra demonstrates the depth that SUSTech's mathematics department expects.

Common Mistakes

Study Plan & Application Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Writing a US-style personal narrative essay instead of a focused Study Plan: SUSTech wants academic purpose and research motivation, not a coming-of-age story. Faculty reviewers find personal backstory without intellectual content actively unhelpful.
  • Vague research interests: 'I am interested in AI' is insufficient. 'I am interested in graph neural networks for drug discovery, and I want to explore this through the computational chemistry group at SUSTech' is what the faculty reviewer wants to read.
  • Failing to research SUSTech's specific programmes, labs, and faculty before writing: A generic Study Plan that could apply to any Chinese university signals low genuine interest. This is the single most common weakness in international applications.
  • Submitting a Study Plan with grammatical errors or unclear English: The Study Plan is read as a demonstration of English academic writing ability. An application with a strong IELTS score but a poorly written Study Plan is self-contradictory and raises questions about research communication ability.
  • Missing the CSC scholarship deadline: The Chinese Government Scholarship deadline (typically March) comes significantly before standard admission deadlines. Missing it means paying full fees. Plan all applications backwards from the March CSC deadline.
  • Requesting reference letters too late: Give referees at least 6 weeks' notice. A rushed reference letter is generic and unhelpful. Brief your referees specifically about your intended programme and what aspects of your work you want highlighted.
  • Not verifying the language of instruction: Some SUSTech undergraduate programmes are primarily Chinese-medium. Apply to a Chinese-medium programme without Mandarin proficiency is a fundamental mismatch that wastes your application fee and time.

Application FAQs

Application & Study Plan — Frequently Asked Questions

Does SUSTech use the Common Application or UCAS?+

No. SUSTech has its own international admissions portal at infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn. There is no Common App, Coalition App, or UCAS route for SUSTech. International applicants apply directly through the university's portal, which is separate from the Chinese gaokao system used by domestic applicants.

What is the Study Plan and how long should it be?+

The Study Plan (also called a Personal Statement or Motivation Letter) is a focused academic document explaining your research interests, relevant academic background, reasons for choosing SUSTech and your specific programme, and your academic goals. Aim for 500–800 words. Be clear, specific, and intellectually substantive. It is read by faculty in your intended department — not just an administrative admissions team.

Can I write my Study Plan in English?+

Yes. English is the standard language for the Study Plan in international track applications. If you are applying to a Chinese-medium programme, a Chinese-language Study Plan may be preferred or required — verify with the International Admissions Office.

Are there interviews?+

Some programmes and scholarship tracks include an online interview. Prepare to discuss your Study Plan in depth, explain your research interests coherently, and demonstrate intellectual curiosity under questioning. Not all applicants are interviewed — it depends on the programme and the competitiveness of the applicant pool in a given cycle.

How important is the Study Plan compared to my grades?+

For international applicants, the Study Plan is reviewed by faculty in your intended department and can significantly influence decisions, particularly when multiple applicants meet the academic threshold. A specific, well-researched Study Plan that references actual SUSTech labs or faculty can distinguish you from an equally qualified candidate with a generic statement — especially for competitive programmes like Computer Science and AI.

Can I mention specific faculty members I want to work with?+

Yes, and it is strongly encouraged. Mentioning specific faculty members whose research you find compelling — and explaining precisely why — demonstrates genuine engagement with SUSTech's academic identity. This is one of the most powerful differentiating moves in an international application. Only mention faculty whose work you have actually read and can discuss substantively.

What if my intended programme is taught primarily in Chinese?+

Some undergraduate programmes at SUSTech are primarily delivered in Mandarin. Verify the language of instruction for your specific programme before applying. If the programme requires Mandarin proficiency, you will need to provide evidence of Chinese language ability (HSK scores or equivalent). Applying to a Chinese-medium programme without Mandarin is a fundamental mismatch — confirm language of instruction first.

How do I apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship alongside admission?+

The CSC scholarship application is a completely separate process from the admission application. Apply for CSC at csc.edu.cn (select SUSTech as your host university) before the March deadline. Simultaneously submit your admission application at infoadmin.sustech.edu.cn. Contact SUSTech International Admissions to confirm they have nominated you for the CSC scholarship — this nomination step is essential and separate from your CSC application submission.
