Why NCKU — Engineering Excellence, Industry Links & Value

National Cheng Kung University is not merely Taiwan's third-ranked university — it is the country's most industry-connected research institution, producing the engineers and scientists who power Asia's semiconductor supply chain. For international students seeking rigorous technical education in a safe, affordable, culturally rich environment, NCKU offers a proposition that few universities anywhere in the world can match.

01Ranked #3 in Taiwan, Top 250 Globally
NCKU holds the third position among Taiwanese universities in QS World University Rankings (#228 globally) and ranks among Asia's top 50 in engineering disciplines. In Taiwan's national technology ecosystem, its reputation is second only to NTU.
02Taiwan's #1 Industry-Academia Collaboration
NCKU consistently ranks first among Taiwanese universities for industry-academia collaboration. Its proximity to Tainan's Southern Taiwan Science Park means students access TSMC, ASE Group, MediaTek, and hundreds of tech companies from Year 1.
03Distinguished Alumni
NCKU alumni include Taiwan's President Lai Ching-te, Nobel laureate Samuel C.C. Ting (Physics, 1976), and senior executives across TSMC, Acer, and Delta Electronics — demonstrating reach across science, industry, and public life.
04Exceptional Value for World-Class Education
Annual tuition of approximately USD 3,800 and estimated total cost of attendance around USD 10,000 make NCKU one of the most compelling value propositions in international higher education — comparable disciplines cost 10–20× more at US or UK institutions.

NCKU Acceptance Rate & International Student Profile

The 64% overall acceptance rate is misleading for competitive programmes. Engineering, Computer Science, and Medicine attract large applicant pools and are significantly more selective — particularly for the limited international student quota. An IB score of 32 is an indicative minimum; competitive programmes typically admit students with stronger profiles.

NCKU Admissions Requirements — Transcripts, English Proficiency & Study Plan

Academic Transcripts
Value: Strong in relevant subjects
  • High marks in mathematics and sciences for Engineering/CS
  • Biology and chemistry essential for Medicine
  • IB 32+ indicative minimum; competitive programmes expect more
  • Consistent upward or sustained performance preferred
Academic transcripts are the most heavily weighted component of your NCKU application. The committee looks for strong, consistent performance in subjects directly relevant to your intended programme — not an all-round high score divorced from your field.
English Proficiency
Value: IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 79
  • IELTS Academic minimum 6.0 overall
  • TOEFL iBT minimum 79
  • Required for all English-taught programmes
  • Native English speakers / English-schooled students may be waived
English proficiency certification is mandatory for English-taught programmes. These are minimum thresholds — for competitive programmes, aiming for IELTS 6.5–7.0 or TOEFL 90+ signals stronger communication ability.
Study Plan / Statement of Purpose
Value: Tailored Study Plan
  • Name specific NCKU faculty or research groups you want to work with
  • Link your academic background to your intended research direction
  • State clear, realistic post-graduation goals
  • Graduate applicants: contact potential supervisors before applying
The Study Plan (Statement of Purpose for graduate applicants) is your most important written document. Generic plans are rejected. A compelling plan names specific aspects of NCKU's programme, connects your background to a clear research direction, and demonstrates that you have done your homework.

NCKU Application Components — Direct Apply, Study Plan & Documents

NCKU uses Taiwan's direct university application system — not the Common App, UCAS, or any centralised platform. Below is every component of a complete NCKU application for international students, with strategic notes for each.

01RequiredOnline Application via OIA Portal
NCKU uses a direct application portal managed by the Office of International Affairs (OIA). There is no Common App or centralised platform — you apply to NCKU only.
02RequiredStudy Plan / Statement of Purpose
Your primary written document. Open-format — no fixed prompts. For undergraduates: background, motivation, goals. For graduate applicants: research proposal with specific questions and NCKU faculty alignment.
03RequiredOfficial Academic Transcripts
Certified transcripts from all secondary schools and universities attended. Non-English documents must be notarised translations. This is the most heavily weighted component.
04RequiredEnglish Proficiency Certificate
Official IELTS or TOEFL score report for English-taught programmes. Submit the original certificate — not a screenshot. Ensure validity at time of submission.
05RequiredTwo Letters of Recommendation
Academic recommenders who can speak specifically to your ability and potential in the target field. Graduate applicants should seek letters from research supervisors where possible.
06Optional / VariesPortfolio (Architecture & Design)
Required for Architecture, Planning & Design, and Fine Arts programmes. Should demonstrate spatial thinking, design process, and creative range — quality over quantity.
07OptionalSAT / ACT / GRE / GMAT
NCKU's test policy is optional for most programmes. Some graduate management programmes may request GRE or GMAT — confirm with your target department. Strong scores may be submitted as supplementary evidence.

NCKU Application Writing — Crafting Your Study Plan

Tips

The Study Plan is not a personal essay — it is an academic argument
Unlike the Common App personal statement, the NCKU Study Plan is primarily an academic and professional document. Reviewers are faculty and department staff who want to know what you plan to study and why you are prepared to do it — not your life story.
Name specific faculty, labs, or research directions
The single most effective differentiator in an NCKU Study Plan is specificity. Naming a professor whose research aligns with your interests — and explaining why — signals genuine preparation and dramatically improves the quality of your file.
Graduate applicants: contact a supervisor before you apply
In Taiwanese academic culture, informing a potential supervisor of your intent before applying is expected. A professor who knows your name and research interests will advocate for your file. Do not skip this step for master's or doctoral applications.
Shorter is not weaker — but vague is fatal
A focused, 700-word Study Plan that makes a clear argument is stronger than a 2,000-word document that wanders. Every paragraph should have a clear purpose: background, motivation, research direction, future plans.

Prompts

Study Plan (Statement of Purpose)
NCKU requires no standardised prompts. The Study Plan is open-format — typically 500–1,500 words covering: (1) Academic background relevant to the programme; (2) Motivation for choosing NCKU and this specific programme; (3) Research interests or academic goals; (4) Future career or study plans.
Research Proposal (Graduate)
Graduate applicants should submit a Research Proposal — a more focused document articulating the specific research question you wish to pursue, its significance, your methodological approach, and why NCKU's resources and faculty make it the right institution for this work.
Portfolio (Architecture / Planning / Design)
Architecture and Planning applicants submit a portfolio alongside the Study Plan. The portfolio is an equally important document — it is the visual argument for your creative thinking and spatial intelligence. Present 8–15 pieces that show range, depth, and process.
The most common NCKU application mistake. Submitting a generic Study Plan — one that could apply to any university — without naming a single specific aspect of NCKU's programme, faculty, or research capacity.

What NCKU Admissions Committees Look For

NCKU's admissions process is department-based and academically focused. Unlike US holistic review, extracurricular activities carry relatively little weight. The committee's core question is: does this applicant have the academic preparation, the intellectual focus, and the genuine motivation to succeed in this programme?

01Academic Strength in Relevant Subjects
NCKU's review process is academically focused. Strong grades in subjects directly related to the target programme — particularly mathematics and sciences for engineering — are the primary criterion. Breadth matters less than depth in the right areas.
02Clear Research Direction or Academic Focus
Particularly for graduate applicants, a clear and specific research agenda signals intellectual maturity. Vague enthusiasm for a field is not enough — the committee wants to see that you know what you want to study and have thought seriously about how.
03Genuine Motivation for NCKU and Taiwan
Why NCKU specifically? Why Taiwan? Generic answers — 'it is a prestigious university' or 'Taiwan is beautiful' — do not convince reviewers. Specific answers — a named faculty member, a research lab, NCKU's industry partnerships, the semiconductor industry context — demonstrate real preparation.
04English (or Chinese) Proficiency
For English-taught programmes, the quality of your Study Plan is itself a language test. Grammatical errors, unclear expression, and poorly structured argument raise legitimate doubts about the applicant's ability to engage in rigorous academic work in English.
05Research Experience or Academic Initiative (Graduate)
For master's and doctoral applicants, prior research experience is a significant differentiator. An undergraduate thesis, a published paper, participation in a faculty lab, or a competitive research programme strengthens the profile considerably.
06Fit with Department Resources
NCKU evaluates applications with reference to available supervisor capacity and departmental resources. Applications that identify specific faculty whose current research aligns with the applicant's interests are more likely to find a receptive departmental committee.

NCKU Financial Aid & Scholarships for International Students

NCKU does not operate a US-style need-blind financial aid programme. However, the combination of low tuition (~USD 3,800/year), affordable living costs in Tainan (~USD 6,500/year), and access to Taiwan government scholarships makes NCKU one of the most financially accessible research universities in Asia for international students.

All figures are estimates in USD. Costs are paid in New Taiwan Dollar (TWD) and are subject to exchange rate fluctuations. Confirm current tuition with the NCKU OIA before applying.

Taiwan Scholarships Are Grants, Not Loans. Unlike US universities that may package financial aid as a mix of grants and loans, Taiwan's scholarship programmes provide direct grants — money you do not repay. The Taiwan MOE Taiwan Scholarship Program and MOFA scholarship are merit-based government grants. For research-active graduate students, research assistantships provide regular stipends for funded lab work.

Spring Intake Decisions
Date: Approx. November–December

Advantages

  • Fall intake (September) has the widest programme availability
  • More time to prepare a polished Study Plan and gather documents
  • Most government scholarships are aligned with the Fall intake cycle
  • September start aligns with most international academic calendars
  • More departmental supervisors available for new students in September

Disadvantages

  • Not all programmes offer Spring intake — Medicine and some engineering programmes are Fall-only
  • Spring intake scholarship availability is more limited
  • Smaller cohort of international students in Spring intake
  • Government scholarship deadlines may not align with Spring applications
  • Less time to prepare if you apply in October after a gap
Fall vs Spring Intake. NCKU admits international students for two intakes each year. The Fall (September) intake is the primary and more flexible window; Spring (February) is available for some programmes. Always confirm your target programme's intake availability with the OIA.
Tychr's Intake Recommendation. Apply for the Fall (September) intake if at all possible. It offers the broadest programme availability, the strongest scholarship alignment, and the largest incoming international student cohort. Reserve Spring only if your timeline genuinely prevents a Fall application.

NCKU Interview — Does It Happen and How to Prepare

Most NCKU undergraduate programmes do not include a formal interview. The application is reviewed on documents alone. However, Medicine and some Architecture programmes may include an interview or practical assessment. For graduate applicants, an informal conversation with a potential supervisor — via email or video call — is common and strongly recommended. This conversation is effectively a pre-admission interview and can significantly influence the departmental committee's decision.

Questions

Why do you want to study/research in this specific area at NCKU?
Tip: Mention specific projects, publications, or research threads from faculty in your target department — not generic departmental reputation.
Describe your academic background and how it prepares you for this programme.
Tip: Graduate applicants should have a clear 1–2 sentence summary of their proposed research direction. Undergraduates should describe their strongest relevant academic or project experience.
What are your plans after completing your degree?
Tip: Keep this realistic and grounded. A specific industry role in Taiwan's tech sector or a clear plan to return home and apply your training is more convincing than vague global ambitions.
What draws you to this supervisor's / lab's work specifically?
Tip: Show that you have read their papers or investigated their lab. A supervisor who feels their work has been genuinely engaged with is more likely to advocate for your admission.
Is there anything in your academic record you want to clarify?
Tip: Do not avoid this question. Frame any gap, direction change, or weakness briefly and factually. Do not over-explain.

My Study Plan was the first draft I had ever written for a Taiwanese university — I had no idea what the format should be. Tychr's counsellors helped me understand that NCKU wasn't looking for a personal story but a research argument. Once I rewrote it around the specific nanoelectronics lab I wanted to join, everything changed.

Faqs

Is NCKU taught in English or Mandarin Chinese?+

It depends on the programme. Many graduate programmes — particularly in engineering, CS, and the IMBA — are fully or partially taught in English. Most undergraduate programmes are taught primarily in Mandarin Chinese. Always confirm the language of instruction with the target department before applying.

Do international students apply through a different process from domestic students?+

Yes. International students apply through a dedicated process managed by NCKU's Office of International Affairs (OIA). There is a separate quota for international students — you are not competing directly against domestic applicants. The process is entirely separate from Taiwan's domestic university admission system.

Can I study at NCKU without speaking Chinese?+

Yes, if admitted to an English-taught programme. However, learning basic Mandarin is strongly recommended — it makes daily life in Tainan significantly easier and is a highly valued professional asset in East Asia. NCKU's Language Centre offers Chinese courses at all levels.

What scholarships are available for international students?+

The main options are the Taiwan Ministry of Education Taiwan Scholarship Program, the MOFA Taiwan Scholarship for Foreign Students, NCKU institutional awards, and for graduate students, research assistantships through faculty labs. Apply simultaneously with your university application — scholarship windows often run concurrently.

What is the total cost of studying at NCKU?+

Estimated total cost of attendance — including tuition (~USD 3,800/year) and living costs in Tainan (~USD 6,500/year) — is approximately USD 10,000 per year. This is among the most affordable cost profiles for a QS top-250 research university globally.

Is it easy to get a student visa for Taiwan?+

Generally yes. After receiving an NCKU offer letter, most international students obtain a student visa through Taiwan's Bureau of Consular Affairs or the nearest Taiwan overseas mission. NCKU's OIA provides a guidance letter and checklist. Taiwan's student visa process is well-established and straightforward for admitted students from most countries.

How competitive are NCKU's Engineering and CS programmes for international students?+

Very competitive. The overall 64% acceptance rate is misleading — Engineering and CS attract large, well-prepared applicant pools and the international student quota is limited. A strong IB or equivalent profile with high marks in mathematics and sciences, a specific and well-researched Study Plan, and ideally some research or project experience will significantly strengthen your application.

Can I work part-time while studying at NCKU?+

International students in Taiwan may apply for a work permit once enrolled and meeting Ministry of Labour conditions. Campus jobs — library, lab assistant, language teaching assistant — are generally accessible. Off-campus work requires government approval. Part-time wages can help offset living costs but will not cover tuition.

Academic Performance — What NCKU's Data Shows

NCKU does not publish a minimum GPA in the Western sense. Taiwan's university system evaluates academic performance through transcripts, subject-level marks, and the overall trajectory of academic preparation — particularly in subjects directly relevant to the intended programme.

An IB score of 32 is an indicative floor, not a guaranteed entry threshold. For NCKU's most competitive programmes, the effective competitive range for international applicants is considerably higher. The specific subjects you scored well in matter as much as the total score.

32+
IB indicative minimum for international admissions
Well above indicative minimum
Competitive programmes (Engineering, CS, Medicine) typically expect
What this means for international students. International students are evaluated with reference to their specific curriculum. NCKU's admissions staff are familiar with IB, A-Level, AP, and most major national secondary qualifications. What matters most is sustained strong performance in subjects that are foundational to the target programme — mathematics and sciences for engineering, biology and chemistry for medicine, mathematics and economics for management.
Grade trajectory matters. An upward academic trajectory — a student who has improved significantly in the final years of secondary school or whose undergraduate performance has strengthened — reads positively. Conversely, a declining trajectory in final year, even from a high base, raises questions about readiness for the rigours of NCKU's programme.

Academic Context

Class Rank and School Context — How NCKU Reads Academic Performance

NCKU evaluates academic performance holistically, with reference to the curriculum system and school context. There is no single class rank threshold, and many international qualifications do not provide formal class rank. NCKU's admissions office is experienced in reading a wide range of international transcripts.

How NCKU contextualises your academic record
Every application is evaluated with reference to the specific curriculum. An IB student who has taken HL Mathematics, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry is evaluated differently from one who took HL Psychology, HL Arts, and HL History — even with the same total score. Subject relevance to the programme is a primary filter.
Less familiar qualifications
For students from curricula with which NCKU is less familiar, the OIA may request additional documentation — grade conversion tables, school profiles, or certified translations. Contact the OIA early if your qualification is non-standard. The recommendation letter from your school or academic referee is particularly important in providing institutional context.
For students at less well-known international schools. For international students at schools that NCKU's committee may not recognise, a strong recommendation letter from your academic referee that contextualises your performance within your school's academic environment is especially important. If your school regularly sends students to competitive universities, mention this in your Study Plan.

SAT at NCKU

SAT Scores at NCKU — Not Required, But Can Supplement

NCKU does not require SAT scores for international student admissions. The test policy is optional — SAT is not a standard part of the application and its absence is not penalised.

LabelScorePercent
SAT policyOptional / Not Required0
If submitted — treated as supplementary academic evidenceInformational0
If you have strong SAT scores. For US-curriculum applicants who have strong SAT Math scores (750+), submitting scores can provide a useful quantitative benchmark that complements transcripts. This is particularly relevant for students from US curriculum schools applying to Engineering or CS programmes.
Where to focus your preparation. Tychr does not recommend investing significant preparation time in SAT specifically for NCKU applications. Language proficiency (IELTS/TOEFL) preparation and Study Plan quality will deliver far higher ROI for your NCKU application.
Submitting vs. not submitting SAT scores. Submit SAT scores if you already have them and they are strong (1450+). Do not invest in SAT preparation specifically for NCKU — the admissions value of a strong SAT score is marginal compared to a strong IELTS/TOEFL score and a well-crafted Study Plan.

ACT at NCKU

ACT Scores at NCKU — Not Part of the Standard Application

NCKU does not require or specifically evaluate ACT scores for international student admissions. The ACT is not part of Taiwan's university application framework.

Comparison Cards

SAT vs ACT at NCKU
Both are optional and treated identically — as supplementary evidence for US-curriculum applicants.
The tests that matter
IELTS and TOEFL are the required language tests — these are the standardised tests that actually matter for your NCKU application.
Tychr's guidance
Invest your test preparation time in IELTS or TOEFL, not SAT or ACT. The return is substantially higher for NCKU applications.
ACT policy. NCKU does not use ACT superscoring or any ACT-specific admissions framework. The ACT is not evaluated on the same basis as at US universities.
Tychr's recommendation. Do not prioritise ACT preparation for an NCKU application. Focus on achieving a strong IELTS or TOEFL score, crafting a specific and compelling Study Plan, and for graduate applicants, establishing contact with a potential supervisor.

Testing Strategy

NCKU Test Policy — What Is and Isn't Required

NCKU's test-optional policy for international students means that SAT and ACT scores are not required and their absence does not penalise the application. The tests that ARE required — for English-taught programmes — are IELTS and TOEFL. Understanding this distinction is critical for applicants from US-curriculum schools who may be accustomed to the SAT/ACT framework.

You have a strong SAT (1450+) or ACT (32+) score from US-curriculum preparation and wish to provide additional academic context.
You are applying to a graduate programme that specifically requests GRE or GMAT (confirm with your target department).
Submitting scores adds information that your transcripts alone do not capture — e.g., a very high Math score for an Engineering application from a curriculum where your school grades may be harder to interpret.

Withhold Items

You do not have SAT/ACT scores — there is no penalty and no expectation that you should.
Your SAT/ACT score is low relative to your transcript profile — submitting would introduce a negative data point without benefit.
You are applying to a programme that does not request GRE/GMAT — unsolicited scores add little value.
Current test policy. NCKU does not require SAT, ACT, or any standardised aptitude test for undergraduate or graduate international admissions. The application is evaluated primarily on academic transcripts, Study Plan, and language proficiency certificates.
The misconception for US-curriculum applicants. The key misconception among US-curriculum applicants is that NCKU works like a US university — that a strong SAT score will compensate for a weaker language certificate or transcripts. It will not. IELTS or TOEFL is the required language test, and nothing substitutes for it. Academic transcripts in relevant subjects are the primary academic criterion.

International Qualifications

IB and A-Level at NCKU — Specific Benchmarks

IB Diploma
Note: For IB applicants: the total score matters, but the HL subject choices matter equally. An IB student applying to Electrical Engineering should have HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches preferred), HL Physics, and strong performance in other relevant subjects. An IB score of 32 is the published indicative minimum; competitive programmes will expect substantially more.

  • {"label":"HL expectations (Engineering)","value":"HL Mathematics AA and HL Physics"}
  • {"label":"HL expectations (Medicine)","value":"HL Biology and HL Chemistry"}
A-Levels
Note: UK A-Level students should take at least three A-Levels with subject choices directly relevant to the target programme. NCKU admissions staff are familiar with A-Level standards. Predicted grades are accepted — NCKU understands the UK predicted grade convention and evaluates accordingly. Strong AS results alongside good predicted A2 grades present a coherent academic picture.

AP Courses

AP Courses at NCKU — What They Mean and What They Don't

AP courses are not a standard part of the application framework for NCKU, which follows Taiwan's direct international admissions system rather than the US Common App model. However, AP courses can serve as useful supplementary evidence of academic rigour for US-curriculum applicants.

When AP scores help
AP scores in relevant subjects (Calculus BC, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science) signal academic preparation that complements transcripts. A 5 in Calculus BC is meaningful evidence for an Engineering or CS application.
AP credit policy at NCKU
NCKU does not grant course credit for AP scores in the same way that US universities do. AP scores submitted to NCKU are treated as supplementary evidence only.
For non-US curriculum students
International students from non-US curricula (IB, A-Level, national boards) should not pursue AP courses specifically for NCKU. Your primary qualification is the appropriate vehicle — invest in mastering your own system.
NCKU does not operate a formal AP credit system. Submitting AP scores is optional and their weight in the admissions decision is supplementary rather than primary.
Students from IB, A-Level, or other national curriculum systems should not pursue AP courses specifically for NCKU. Your existing qualification — evaluated in the context of your curriculum's norms — is the appropriate and sufficient evidence of academic preparation.

Curriculum Rigour

Rigour of Secondary School Record — Why It Matters at NCKU

NCKU evaluates the rigour of your secondary school curriculum with reference to what was available to you. A student who took the most challenging options available in relevant subjects — HL Mathematics and HL Physics in IB, Further Mathematics and Physics at A-Level, advanced mathematics and sciences in a national curriculum — demonstrates the academic ambition that NCKU's engineering programmes are built on.

Taking the most relevant, most demanding subjects available to you — not the easiest path to a high total score.

Rigour in context. Rigour is always evaluated relative to what was possible. A student at a school that offers only standard-level mathematics is evaluated differently from one at a school with multiple advanced mathematics options. What matters is whether the student challenged themselves relative to what was accessible.
What rigour means for NCKU. For NCKU's engineering and science programmes, rigour means strong preparation in mathematics and the relevant sciences — not breadth across many subjects. An IB student with 40 points across Visual Arts, Psychology, and Film Studies is less well-prepared for NCKU Engineering than one with 34 points across HL Maths, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry.
What NCKU is looking for. NCKU's departmental admissions committees are academically oriented. They want to see that you have done the mathematical and scientific preparation that their programmes demand from day one. A student who walks in with HL Maths AA, HL Physics, and strong chemistry preparation is ready to begin; one who arrives having avoided quantitative subjects is not.

Programme Preparation

Mathematics and Science Preparation — What NCKU Expects by Programme

NCKU's flagship programmes in engineering, computer science, and medicine are technically demanding. The academic preparation required before arriving at NCKU is substantial — particularly in mathematics and the sciences. Understanding the specific preparation each programme demands helps you assess your readiness and identify gaps to address before applying.

Mathematics
Calculus (single and multi-variable) and linear algebra are taught in Year 1 across all engineering programmes. Students who arrive without solid calculus preparation will struggle immediately. IB HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) or A-Level Further Mathematics is the expected preparation level for engineering applicants.
Sciences
Physics is foundational for Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, and Materials Science. Chemistry is essential for Chemical and Materials Engineering. Biology is required for Bioscience and Medicine. Advanced secondary school preparation in the relevant science — IB HL or A-Level equivalent — is expected.
Computer Science
Prior programming experience in at least one language (Python, C, Java) is strongly recommended for CS applicants. Understanding of discrete mathematics and basic data structures is an advantage. CS at NCKU is mathematically rigorous — HL Mathematics and some programming background together represent the strongest preparation.

Language Requirements

English Language Requirements for International NCKU Applicants

For English-taught programmes, NCKU mandates submission of an official English language proficiency certificate. The two primary accepted tests are IELTS Academic and TOEFL iBT. The minimum scores — IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 79 — are programme thresholds, not competitive targets.

The quality of your Study Plan is itself a language assessment. A Study Plan written in clear, precise, well-structured English demonstrates language ability directly. Conversely, a Study Plan full of grammatical errors raises doubts about the applicant's ability to engage in rigorous academic work in English — regardless of the IELTS/TOEFL score submitted.

Test: IELTS Academic
Score: 6.0+
Test: TOEFL iBT
Score: 79+
Test: Duolingo
Score: Not confirmed — verify with OIA
Practical guidance for competitive applicants. For competitive programmes, Tychr recommends targeting IELTS 6.5–7.0 or TOEFL 90+ rather than the minimum. A score at or near the minimum satisfies the requirement but does not distinguish your application. A strong score above the minimum is a positive signal, particularly for graduate programmes where English-medium research and publication are expectations.

By Programme

Academic Requirements by NCKU Programme — What Different Paths Expect

NCKU admits students to specific programmes, not to the university broadly. The academic profile should be coherent with the programme you are applying to — a strong IB total with weak mathematics signals a potential mismatch for Engineering programmes.

International Systems

NCKU and International Education Systems — How Your Curriculum Is Evaluated

IB Diploma
IB is well-understood and widely accepted at NCKU. Admissions staff evaluate total score alongside HL subject choices and grades. The Extended Essay is noted and the overall IB profile is read as a coherent picture of academic ambition. An IB score of 32 is the published indicative minimum; for competitive programmes, a significantly higher score with strong relevant HL subjects is expected.
A-Levels (Cambridge and Edexcel)
A-Levels are familiar to NCKU's international admissions staff. Three A-Level subjects in relevant disciplines are the expected profile. Predicted grades are accepted alongside any completed AS or A-Level results. A combination of Mathematics and at least one relevant science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) is expected for STEM applicants.
Indian Boards (CBSE / ISC)
CBSE Class XII and ISC results are accepted and understood. Indian applicants should aim for 90%+ in relevant subjects (mathematics, physics, chemistry) for engineering programmes. The volume of Indian applicants means NCKU has developed familiarity with performance distributions in the Indian system.
US Curriculum (AP / SAT)
AP courses submitted as part of a US curriculum profile are treated as supplementary evidence. A strong AP record in relevant subjects adds positive context for US-curriculum applicants, but does not substitute for IELTS/TOEFL or transcript requirements.
Other National Qualifications
National secondary qualifications from most countries are accepted — the OIA processes applications from students across Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas. Where a qualification is less familiar, the OIA may request additional context or documentation. Apply early and contact the OIA directly if your qualification is unusual.

Profile Roadmap

Building an Academic Profile for NCKU — What to Do at Each Stage

Grade 9–10Lay the foundation
Year: Grade 9–10
  • Select subjects that leave the broadest options for advanced study in your intended field — mathematics and sciences are non-negotiable for engineering.
  • Aim for consistently strong marks in mathematics and relevant sciences throughout these years.
  • Begin identifying NCKU — research the university, its programmes, and its research landscape. Early awareness shapes better preparation.
Grade 11Deepen and engage
Year: Grade 11
  • IB HL or A-Level subject choices should prioritise academic relevance over grade optimisation — take HL Maths even if it is harder.
  • Seek research exposure: a school science project, a university summer programme, or independent study in your intended field.
  • Begin English language preparation if English is not your primary language of instruction — IELTS/TOEFL preparation takes months of sustained work.
Grade 12 (First Half)Language test and supervisor outreach
Year: Grade 12 (First Half)
  • Register for and sit IELTS or TOEFL in the first semester, leaving time for a resit if the score falls short.
  • Graduate applicants: identify and contact potential NCKU supervisors by email. Be concise, professional, and specific about your research interests.
  • Begin drafting your Study Plan — start with the research direction or academic focus section and work outward.
Grade 12 (Second Half / Application Year)Submit a complete, specific application
Year: Grade 12 (Second Half / Application Year)
  • Finalise your Study Plan — revise until every paragraph is specific to NCKU and the target programme.
  • Gather all required documents: certified transcripts, notarised translations, official language test report, recommendation letters.
  • Submit well before the deadline — late or incomplete applications are not reviewed.

Common Pitfalls

Academic Mistakes That Cost NCKU Applications — And How to Avoid Them

Optimising for total score over subject relevance
An IB student with 40 points but weak HL subject choices for their target programme is at a disadvantage compared to one with 34 points but HL Maths AA, HL Physics, and HL Chemistry. NCKU's departmental committees evaluate subject relevance, not just total scores.
Hitting the minimum English score and stopping there
IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 79 are minimum entry thresholds, not competitive targets. Submitting a score at the minimum when the department's typical admitted students average significantly higher weakens your comparative profile.
Writing a generic Study Plan
The Study Plan is the most important written document in your application — but it requires genuine research to write well. Generic plans that could apply to any Taiwanese university are immediately identifiable and are significantly less effective than plans that name specific NCKU labs, faculty, or programme features.
Skipping supervisor contact for graduate applications
For master's and doctoral applications, the Taiwanese academic culture expects prospective students to contact potential supervisors before applying. A supervisor who knows your name and interests will support your application; applying cold without supervisor contact significantly reduces your admission probability.
Applying to programmes without confirming language of instruction
Many NCKU programmes are taught in Mandarin Chinese, not English. Applying to a Mandarin-taught programme without Chinese language capability is a fundamental mismatch that will result in rejection or an unworkable academic experience.

Illustrative Profiles

What Strong NCKU-Admitted Academic Profiles Look Like

The following profiles represent the kinds of academic backgrounds that Tychr has seen succeed in NCKU applications. They illustrate the range of preparation that works, and what made each profile compelling to an NCKU departmental committee.

Profile 1 — Engineering Focus
HL Maths AA (7), HL Physics (6), HL Chemistry (6). Strong secondary school mathematics competition record. Research internship in a university engineering lab during Gap Year. Study Plan named a specific NCKU MEMS lab and referenced the supervisor's recent publication.
Stats: IB 36 · IELTS 7.0
Takeaway: Subject relevance and a specific, well-researched Study Plan were the differentiating factors. The overall IB score was solid but not exceptional — the combination of HL choices, lab experience, and a targeted application carried the profile.
Profile 2 — Electrical Engineering (Graduate)
A-Levels: Mathematics A*, Physics A, Chemistry A. Strong TOEFL (102). Email correspondence with a potential supervisor at NCKU's Advanced Semiconductor Device Lab before applying. Supervisor mentioned the application to the departmental committee.
Stats: A-Levels A*AA · TOEFL 102
Takeaway: The supervisor relationship was decisive. The academic profile was strong but not outstanding — the specific research fit and prior outreach to the supervisor were what distinguished this application from others with higher raw scores.
Profile 3 — Materials Science
CBSE Class XII: 96% Mathematics, 94% Physics, 93% Chemistry. Participated in a national science fair. Study Plan articulated a specific interest in NCKU's role in Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain and named two faculty members whose fabrication research aligned with the applicant's interests.
Stats: CBSE 94% avg (relevant subjects) · IELTS 6.5
Takeaway: The Indian board profile was strong and well-interpreted by NCKU. The Study Plan's specific reference to Taiwan's semiconductor industry — and the applicant's articulated goal of contributing to it — connected academic preparation to a credible professional trajectory.

Faqs

Is an IB score of 32 competitive for NCKU Engineering?+

The IB score of 32 is an indicative minimum for the international student admissions process. For NCKU's most competitive programmes — Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Medicine — admitted students typically have profiles well above this threshold. IB 35+ with strong relevant HL subjects is a more realistic target for these programmes.

If I meet the IELTS/TOEFL minimum, is my language requirement satisfied?+

No. IELTS 6.0 / TOEFL 79 are minimum thresholds that must be met to be considered. They are not indicative of the typical score among admitted international students. For competitive programmes, aiming for IELTS 6.5–7.0 / TOEFL 90+ is advisable.

Should I contact a professor before applying to NCKU?+

Highly recommended for graduate programmes; not typically required for undergraduate applications unless specifically indicated. For master's and doctoral programmes, contacting a potential supervisor before applying is expected in Taiwanese academic culture and significantly improves your admission probability.

Are all NCKU programmes taught in English?+

No. Many NCKU programmes — particularly undergraduate programmes — are conducted in Mandarin Chinese. English-taught programmes are more common at the graduate level. Always confirm the language of instruction for your specific target programme and department before applying.

How long does the NCKU application process take to prepare for?+

A realistic minimum preparation timeline is 6–8 months — enough time for language test preparation, drafting and revising a Study Plan, obtaining certified transcripts, arranging recommendation letters, and (for graduate applicants) supervisor outreach. Starting 12 months before your intended intake is more comfortable.

Aid Policy

NCKU's Financial Aid Model for International Students — What Exists and What Doesn't

Unlike Harvard or Princeton, NCKU does not operate a need-blind, full-need financial aid programme that covers costs for all admitted international students based on family income. Taiwan's public university system is not built on that model. What exists instead is a combination of government merit scholarships (Taiwan MOE, MOFA) and NCKU institutional awards — all merit-based rather than need-based.

Why the Self-Funded Cost Is Still Compelling. For most international students, the financial case for NCKU does not rest on financial aid — it rests on the fact that full-cost self-funded study at NCKU (~USD 10,000/year) costs less than a single semester at many Western universities. The scholarship system provides additional relief for the most academically competitive applicants.
What Happens After Admission. After admission, international students may apply for NCKU institutional scholarships through the OIA, for government scholarships through Taiwan's overseas missions, and for research assistantships (graduate students only) through their target department or supervisor. These processes run on separate timelines from the admissions decision.
Merit-Based, Not Need-Based — A Different System
NCKU does not operate need-blind admissions in the US sense. Financial circumstances are not formally considered in admissions decisions, but this is because Taiwan's public university tuition is already low enough that need-based aid infrastructure is less developed than at major US institutions.

Taiwan's Investment in International Students

Why NCKU Represents Exceptional Value — The Full Picture

Taiwan Government Commitment to International Students
Taiwan's Ministry of Education actively recruits talented international students through its Taiwan Scholarship Program — a government-funded initiative that provides tuition waivers and monthly stipends to competitive international applicants at NCKU and other leading Taiwanese universities. This represents a direct government investment in international talent attraction.
Subtitle: MOE + MOFA scholarship programmes
Institutional Investment in Research Infrastructure
NCKU's consistently high industry-academia collaboration ranking — first in Taiwan — reflects institutional investment in research infrastructure and industry partnerships that directly benefits students. The research environment accessible to NCKU students is disproportionate to the tuition charged.
Subtitle: 40+ research centres, first in Taiwan for industry-academia
QS World University Ranking. At QS #228 globally and #3 in Taiwan, NCKU delivers research university calibre education at a total annual cost (~USD 10,000) that is a fraction of what comparable-ranked institutions charge in the US, UK, Australia, or Singapore.
"NCKU's mission is to cultivate students into well-rounded individuals who will contribute to Taiwanese society and the international community."

Aid Application Walkthrough

Applying for Scholarships and Funding at NCKU — Step by Step

NCKU financial support is not automatic — it requires proactive applications to multiple sources with their own timelines. Here is the complete process.

01Research available scholarships well in advance
  • Taiwan MOE Taiwan Scholarship — apply through Taiwan's overseas mission in your country
  • MOFA Taiwan Scholarship — check eligibility for your nationality
  • NCKU institutional scholarships — check OIA website for current cycle
  • Home-country government funding — research national study-abroad grants
Scholarship application processes are separate from and often run ahead of university admissions timelines. Begin researching 6–12 months before your intended intake.
02Apply to NCKU and Scholarships Simultaneously
Notes: Many government scholarships require you to be accepted to a Taiwanese university — apply to NCKU and the scholarship simultaneously or in the correct sequence based on the scholarship's requirements.
  • Submit NCKU application through OIA portal
  • Indicate scholarship interest in your application where prompted
  • Apply to government scholarships through Taiwan's representative office in your country
The NCKU application and scholarship applications often run on overlapping timelines.
03For Graduate Students: Contact a Supervisor About Funding
Graduate students should raise the question of research assistantship funding when establishing contact with a potential supervisor — before formal application if possible.
04Receive Admission Offer and Scholarship Decision
NCKU scholarship decisions are typically communicated alongside or shortly after the admissions decision. Government scholarship decisions follow their own timeline.
05Confirm Funding Package and Accept Offer
Once you have a clear picture of your funding — admission offer, any scholarships, and your own resources — make the final enrolment decision and follow NCKU's OIA guidance for acceptance and visa documentation.

International Student Funding

Financial Aid for International Students at NCKU — How It Works

International students at NCKU access funding through a different mechanism than at major US research universities. Understanding the landscape — government scholarships, institutional awards, and research assistantships — helps you navigate it effectively.

Government scholarships are the primary source
The Taiwan MOE Taiwan Scholarship Program and MOFA Taiwan Scholarship for Foreign Students are the most substantial external funding sources available to international students at NCKU. These are merit-based government grants — not need-based — and are competitive across all Taiwanese universities simultaneously.
NCKU institutional awards vary year to year
NCKU maintains its own scholarship schemes, managed through the OIA. Awards, amounts, and eligibility criteria change each cycle. Contact the OIA early in your application process to understand what is currently available for your nationality and programme level.
Research assistantships for graduate STEM students
The most reliable pathway to meaningful financial support for master's and doctoral students in NCKU's STEM departments is a research assistantship through a faculty lab. These are discretionary — negotiated between the student and the potential supervisor — and can substantially offset living costs. Establishing supervisor contact before applying is the critical enabling step.
Taiwan's National Health Insurance offsets one major cost
Enrolled international students in Taiwan become eligible for National Health Insurance (NHI) after a short waiting period. This provides comprehensive, affordable healthcare coverage — a significant financial benefit not available in most competing study destinations.

Merit vs Need

NCKU Scholarships — Merit-Based, Not Need-Based

All scholarship funding available to international students at NCKU is merit-based — awarded on academic achievement, research potential, or programme distinction. There is no need-based institutional grant programme equivalent to what exists at major US universities.

Government scholarships are merit competitions
Government scholarships (MOE, MOFA) are competitive and assessed on academic merit — grades, qualification level, and the competitiveness of your programme application. A strong academic profile significantly improves your chances.
Why there is no need-based aid at NCKU
NCKU does not have the endowment resources of Harvard or Princeton to fund need-based aid for international students at scale. The public university tuition model in Taiwan — with annual fees around USD 3,800 — is itself the primary mechanism for keeping higher education accessible.
Research assistantships for graduate students
For graduate students, a research assistantship negotiated with a faculty supervisor is the most direct path to meaningful financial support. This is not a formally structured scholarship — it is a working relationship with financial compensation, funded from the supervisor's research budget.
Home-country government and bilateral funding
Many countries provide study-abroad funding for citizens studying at recognised overseas universities, including NCKU. Check your national education ministry, cultural foundations, and bilateral Taiwan-relationship institutions for country-specific opportunities.

External Funding

External Scholarships — Additional Funding Sources for NCKU Students

Beyond NCKU's institutional awards and Taiwan government scholarships, international students may access funding from their home countries, bilateral programmes, and field-specific foundations. Researching this landscape early — 12 months before your intended intake — is essential.

Taiwan MOE Taiwan Scholarship Program
Government-funded; merit-based; covers partial tuition and monthly stipend; apply through Taiwan's overseas mission
MOFA Taiwan Scholarship
Bilateral scholarship for eligible nationalities; check with Taiwan's representative office in your country
Huayu Enrichment Scholarship
For Mandarin language study at Taiwanese universities; useful as a gateway before a full degree programme
Home-country study-abroad grants
Many governments fund students to study in Taiwan; research your national education ministry's study-abroad programmes
Tychr maintains awareness of scholarship opportunities by nationality and field. As part of every full NCKU admissions programme, Tychr maps available external scholarships for the specific student and advises on application timelines.
Scholarship stacking: holding multiple scholarships simultaneously is subject to each scholarship's own terms. Confirm with the NCKU OIA and individual scholarship programmes whether concurrent receipt of multiple awards is permitted.
Taiwan's bilateral scholarship landscape is country-specific. Students from countries with strong Taiwan relations (Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Malaysia, many African and Central American nations) may have access to bilateral scholarship agreements beyond the standard MOE/MOFA programmes. Contact Taiwan's representative office in your country to explore what is available.

Funding Structure

How NCKU's Funding System Works — Grants, Not Loans

Taiwan's scholarship system provides grants, not loans — money you do not repay. There is no NCKU-administered loan programme for international students. Taiwan's government scholarships are structured as outright grants. Research assistantships are earned income, not loans.

Taiwan scholarships are grants
A student who receives a Taiwan MOE Taiwan Scholarship receives grant funding — tuition coverage and a monthly stipend — with no repayment obligation. The same applies to MOFA scholarships and NCKU institutional awards.
Self-funding without loans
International students at NCKU who do not receive scholarship funding self-fund their studies. The total estimated annual cost of approximately USD 10,000 is the amount they pay from their own resources. There is no government or institutional loan programme designed to finance this cost.
Part-time work as supplementary income
International students are eligible to work part-time in Taiwan with appropriate permits. On-campus work does not typically require a separate work permit. Off-campus work requires government approval. Part-time income can help offset living costs but should not be relied upon to cover tuition.
Healthcare — NHI coverage as a hidden benefit
Taiwan's National Health Insurance (NHI) covers enrolled international students after a short waiting period. This is a significant financial benefit — healthcare costs in Taiwan are minimal compared to out-of-pocket expenses or private insurance costs in other study destinations.

Part-Time Work

Working Part-Time at NCKU — What International Students Can Do

International students at NCKU may work part-time in Taiwan with appropriate government approval. On-campus jobs are generally accessible and do not require a separate work permit. Off-campus employment requires a work permit from the Ministry of Labour.

  • Teaching assistant for language exchange programmes (no work permit required on campus)
  • Lab research assistant — paid positions in faculty labs (especially for graduate students)
  • Library and administrative support roles
  • Campus café and dining hall positions
  • Tutoring (mathematics, sciences) for other students
  • International student office support and event coordination
International students who have enrolled at NCKU and received their Alien Resident Certificate (ARC) may apply for a work permit to take part-time off-campus employment. The process requires NCKU documentation and Ministry of Labour approval. On-campus work through the university itself is generally accessible without a separate permit.
Average part-time wages in Taiwan are approximately NTD 150–180/hour (roughly USD 5–6/hour as of recent rates). Working 15–20 hours per week generates approximately USD 300–480/month — a meaningful contribution to living costs in Tainan, which typically run USD 400–600/month.
Part-time work at NCKU is entirely voluntary and not required. Given Tainan's low cost of living, students with scholarship support often find that their stipend covers most living costs without the need for additional work. Students without scholarship support may find part-time work a practical and professionally valuable supplement.

Real Cost Analysis

NCKU vs. Alternatives — What You Actually Pay Over Four Years

For a self-funded international student, NCKU at ~USD 40,000 for a four-year engineering degree competes favourably with virtually every comparable research university in Asia, the UK, the US, or Australia. With a partial scholarship, the four-year cost drops to the range of USD 20,000–28,000 — making a QS top-250 engineering degree genuinely accessible.

Scholarship Appeals

Appealing a Scholarship Decision at NCKU — When and How

NCKU does not operate a formal financial aid appeals process in the US sense — there is no need-based aid formula to recalculate. However, scholarship decisions (both NCKU institutional and government scholarships) can sometimes be reconsidered if circumstances change or if an application was incomplete.

The honest note: NCKU's institutional scholarship pool is limited. If not awarded a scholarship in your initial application cycle, the most productive paths are: (1) demonstrating academic excellence during your first year to qualify for renewal or new awards; (2) pursuing government scholarship applications for subsequent years; (3) for graduate students, securing a research assistantship through supervisor relationships.

How To Appeal

  • Contact the NCKU OIA directly and explain the specific circumstances
  • Provide documentation supporting a changed situation (e.g., proof of a scholarship award from another source that changes your funding picture)
  • For government scholarships, follow the specific appeal procedures of the relevant ministry — MOE or MOFA

When To Appeal

  • New scholarship information has emerged that changes your funding picture and NCKU should be aware of
  • An error was made in the application documentation
  • Your family's financial circumstances have changed significantly since the application was submitted
  • You have received a significantly different scholarship offer from another comparable university
NCKU's OIA response time for scholarship queries varies. The university's administrative processes are thorough but may take several weeks during peak admissions periods. Follow up professionally if you have not received a response within two to three weeks.

Timeline & Planning

Planning for NCKU Costs — What to Do and When

Research the full cost landscape
Timeframe: 12–18 months before intake
Use NCKU's OIA cost information to establish a realistic total annual budget. Factor in tuition (~USD 3,800), accommodation, food, transport, books, and personal expenses. Confirm current tuition rates directly with the OIA — rates can shift modestly year to year.
Identify all scholarship opportunities
Timeframe: 12 months before intake
Research Taiwan MOE Taiwan Scholarship, MOFA scholarship (check your nationality's eligibility), NCKU institutional awards, and home-country study-abroad funding. Note application deadlines for each — government scholarships often have earlier deadlines than university applications.
Apply to NCKU and scholarships simultaneously
Timeframe: 6–9 months before intake (Fall intake: apply March–April)
Submit your NCKU application through the OIA portal and, concurrently, apply to all government and institutional scholarships you are eligible for. Indicate scholarship interest in your NCKU application where prompted.
For graduate students: secure a supervisor commitment
Timeframe: Before submitting application
Contact potential supervisors by email before applying. A supervisor who is willing to take you on may have access to discretionary research funding that significantly offsets your costs. This conversation should happen before the formal application wherever possible.
Receive offer and plan your budget
Timeframe: After admission decision
Once you have a complete picture of your funding — NCKU offer, scholarship results, and your own resources — build a monthly budget for life in Tainan. Identify whether part-time work will supplement your income and whether you need to apply for a work permit.

Application & Study Plan

NCKU Application Writing — Your Study Plan Is Your Essay

NCKU uses Taiwan's direct university application system — not the Common App, UCAS, or any centralised platform. There are no standardised essay prompts. The written component of your application is a Study Plan, and it is the most important document you will submit.

This guide explains what a strong Study Plan looks like for NCKU, how Taiwan's application system works, and how to present yourself most effectively for a Taiwanese research university. The advice is grounded in NCKU's admissions priorities — always confirm current format requirements with the OIA before submitting.

Application System

How NCKU's Application System Works

Taiwan does not use a centralised application platform for international students. You apply directly to NCKU via the OIA's own online portal. Each application is reviewed by the target department's admissions committee.

Confirm the exact format, expected length, and submission requirements for the Study Plan with the NCKU OIA or your target department before writing. Requirements can differ between colleges and may be updated each cycle.

TAIWAN SYSTEM — NOT COMMON APPDirect Application to NCKU
International degree applicants submit to NCKU through the OIA portal. You specify your target college and programme, upload all required documents, and pay the application fee. There is no common application shared with other Taiwanese universities.
MOST IMPORTANT WRITTEN DOCUMENTStudy Plan (Statement of Purpose)
The Study Plan is the written component of your NCKU application. For undergraduates: academic background, programme motivation, and future goals. For graduate applicants: a Research Proposal articulating specific research questions, methodology, and NCKU faculty alignment.
OPEN FORMATNo Standardised Essay Prompts
Unlike the Common App (fixed prompts, 650 words) or UCAS (three questions), NCKU issues no standardised written prompts. Your Study Plan is open-format — you structure it professionally and substantively. This rewards careful preparation but punishes vague, unstructured writing.

Study Plan Structure

What Your NCKU Study Plan Should Cover

NCKU does not issue fixed prompts, but the Study Plan is expected to address four core areas. The structure below reflects what NCKU's departmental committees are looking for — treat each as a section of your document.

FOUNDATIONSection 1 — Academic Background
Official Text: Summarise your academic history with emphasis on subjects and experiences most relevant to your intended programme at NCKU.
Strategic Guide: Be specific and concrete. Name your qualification (IB Diploma with HL Maths AA and HL Physics; A-Level Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology; CBSE Class XII 94% in relevant subjects) and state your results where strong. Explain how your preparation equips you for this specific programme's demands — not just that you 'enjoy' the subject.

MOST SCRUTINISEDSection 2 — Motivation for NCKU and the Programme
Official Text: Explain why you want to study this specific programme, why you have chosen NCKU, and — if applicable — why you want to study in Taiwan.
Strategic Guide: This is where generic applicants fail. 'I have always been interested in engineering' tells the committee nothing. Instead: identify a specific aspect of the programme that connects to your prior experience or a problem you want to solve. Then explain why NCKU's approach — a specific lab, a faculty member's research, the proximity to Taiwan's semiconductor industry — is the right fit. Name actual people and places.
Source: https://oia.ncku.edu.tw/
DECISIVE FOR GRADUATE APPLICANTSSection 3 — Research Interests or Academic Goals
Official Text: Describe your intended research focus (graduate) or the specific academic direction you plan to pursue within your programme (undergraduate).
Strategic Guide: For graduate applicants: articulate a specific research question — not a broad theme. 'I want to study semiconductor devices' is too broad; 'I am interested in characterising trap density in SiC power devices using deep-level transient spectroscopy, and I have identified Professor [Name]'s group at NCKU's Photovoltaics Lab as the leading research context for this work' is specific and credible. Reference NCKU faculty by name where your interests genuinely align.

CLOSING ARGUMENTSection 4 — Future Plans
Official Text: Describe your career or academic goals after completing your degree at NCKU.
Strategic Guide: Keep this realistic and grounded. Do not make extravagant claims about revolutionising an industry. State clearly what you plan to do — continue to PhD research, enter Taiwan's semiconductor industry, return to your home country to work in a specific sector, apply your NCKU training to a regional problem — and explain how the NCKU degree concretely supports that trajectory.

Study Plan Writing Strategy

Writing Your Study Plan — Core Principles

The Study Plan is an open-format document, which means its quality depends entirely on how you approach it. These principles will help you write something that stands out in NCKU's applicant pool.

1Specificity Over Generality
Every paragraph that contains a specific fact, example, or reference to NCKU is stronger than one that does not. Reviewers can instantly distinguish a tailored Study Plan from a template. Write something that only you could have written about only NCKU's specific resources and environment.
2Evidence Over Assertion
Do not assert that you are 'hardworking', 'passionate', or 'motivated'. Instead, describe something you did that demonstrates these qualities — a research project, a mathematics competition result, a problem you pursued independently outside the classroom. Show, do not tell.
3Academic Focus, Not Life Story
The Study Plan is not a personal statement about your childhood or family background. Its primary purpose is to convince an academic committee that you know what you want to study and why, and that you are prepared to do it. Stay close to academic and professional content.
4Professional Presentation
Submit a clean, clearly structured document. Use headings or clear paragraph breaks. Proofread rigorously — grammatical errors and typos signal carelessness to academic reviewers and raise doubts about the applicant's English-language readiness.

Supporting Documents

Supporting Documents That Strengthen Your Application

Beyond the Study Plan, the supporting documents in your application package each play a specific role. Do not treat them as administrative formalities — they are all evaluated by the departmental committee.

Letters of Recommendation
Choose recommenders who can speak specifically to your academic ability and potential in the target field — a mathematics teacher for engineering applicants, a biology teacher for medicine applicants, a research supervisor if you have lab experience. Give recommenders at least four weeks and brief them on your Study Plan so their letters reinforce your narrative rather than contradict it.
Transcripts
Your transcripts are the most heavily weighted document in your file. A consistent record of strong performance in relevant subjects is the most important thing you can present. If there is a dip in one year or one subject, address it briefly in your Study Plan — but do not over-explain. Certified translations of non-English transcripts are mandatory.
Portfolio (Architecture / Design programmes)
Architecture, Planning, and Design applicants must submit a portfolio of creative work alongside the Study Plan. Curate carefully — 8–15 pieces that demonstrate range, design process, spatial thinking, and creative problem-solving. Quality over quantity. Label each piece with medium, dimensions, and context.
English Proficiency Certificate
Submit the official score certificate — not a screenshot or email confirmation. Ensure the certificate is within its validity period (IELTS is valid for two years from the test date). For programmes that require it, this is non-negotiable: missing or invalid certificates will delay or prevent your application from being reviewed.

What to Write About

Choosing the Right Focus for Your NCKU Study Plan

The most common question applicants have: what should my Study Plan actually say? The answer depends on your level (undergraduate vs. graduate) and programme, but several principles apply universally.

For Undergraduates: Connect Your School Experience to the Programme
At the undergraduate level, you are not expected to have a refined research agenda. Your Study Plan should connect your strongest school-level experiences — the mathematics competition you competed in, the chemistry project you pursued, the coding problem you solved independently — to the programme you are applying for at NCKU. The thread should feel natural and specific, not manufactured.
For Graduate Students: Lead with Research
Graduate Study Plans should open with your research direction, not your undergraduate story. Committees want to know what you plan to study — your undergraduate background is context for that, not the central argument. Name the specific research question, the methodological approach, and the NCKU lab or supervisor you want to work with. Be specific and credible.
Do Not Exaggerate Your Background
NCKU's academic environment will immediately expose any gap between the competence you claim in your Study Plan and what you actually know. Write truthfully about where you are in your academic development. Genuine intellectual curiosity, clearly articulated, is more convincing than inflated claims of expertise.
Why Taiwan and Why Now
If your Study Plan does not address why you are choosing to study in Taiwan, it leaves an obvious gap. The answer does not need to be elaborate — but it should be specific. Taiwan's semiconductor industry, NCKU's research infrastructure in your field, the cost and quality balance, a specific opportunity at NCKU that does not exist elsewhere — any of these make a credible and specific answer.

Common Mistakes

Study Plan & Application Mistakes to Avoid

  • Submitting a generic Study Plan that could apply to any university — admissions committees read hundreds of applications and immediately identify template writing.
  • Writing about your life story or childhood rather than your academic focus — the Study Plan is an academic document, not a personal narrative.
  • Failing to mention any specific aspect of NCKU's programme, faculty, or research capacity — this signals that you have not researched the university.
  • Leaving the motivation for choosing Taiwan or NCKU vague — 'Taiwan is a great country with advanced technology' is not a reason; 'NCKU's Advanced Optoelectronic Technology Center and Professor [Name]'s work on III-V compound semiconductors is directly relevant to my research direction' is.
  • Not proofreading — grammatical errors and typos in an academic document signal carelessness and raise doubts about English proficiency.
  • Waiting until the last minute to gather documents — notarised translations, official score reports, and recommendation letters all take weeks to obtain.
  • Neglecting to contact a potential supervisor for graduate programmes — in Taiwanese academic culture this is expected and can be decisive.
  • Applying to programmes without confirming whether they are taught in English or Mandarin — a mismatch in language of instruction is a fundamental application error.
  • Assuming the IELTS/TOEFL minimum is a competitive score — it is a floor, not a target. Aim above it for any competitive programme.

Application FAQs

NCKU Application & Study Plan — Frequently Asked Questions

Does NCKU require a personal statement like US or UK universities?+

Not in the US or UK sense. NCKU requires a Study Plan — an open-format document focused on your academic background, research interests, programme motivation, and future goals. There are no standardised prompts like the Common App or UCAS questions. The Study Plan is less personal-narrative and more academically focused.

How long should the Study Plan be?+

There is no universal fixed word limit. An undergraduate Study Plan is typically 500–1,000 words. A graduate Research Proposal may run 1,000–2,000 words. Confirm the expected length with the NCKU OIA or your target department — requirements can vary by college.

Should I write the Study Plan in English or Chinese?+

Write in the language of your target programme. For English-taught programmes, write in English. For Chinese-taught programmes, Mandarin Chinese is expected and submitting an English Study Plan may disadvantage your application. If you are applying to a Chinese-taught programme, you should also have demonstrated Chinese language ability.

Can I apply to multiple programmes at NCKU simultaneously?+

Confirm this with the OIA — policies on multiple programme applications within the same cycle vary. If you apply to more than one programme, each Study Plan must be genuinely tailored to that programme. Submitting the same document for different programmes signals a lack of genuine focus and is likely to result in rejection.

Should I contact a professor before applying?+

For graduate programmes, yes — strongly recommended. A brief, professional email to a potential supervisor explaining your research interests and asking whether they are accepting students is expected in Taiwanese academic culture. A positive reply that you can reference in your Study Plan significantly strengthens your application. Do not contact faculty for undergraduate applications unless specifically instructed.

Is there an interview as part of the NCKU application?+

Most undergraduate programmes do not include a formal interview. The application is reviewed on documents only. Some programmes — particularly Medicine and certain graduate programmes — may include an interview or practical assessment. Confirm with your target department. Graduate applicants who have contacted a supervisor may have an informal conversation that functions as a pre-admission interview.

What if I have a gap in my academic record or a low grade in one semester?+

Address it briefly and honestly in your Study Plan. A short, matter-of-fact explanation — illness, a direction change, a difficult personal period — is far better than leaving the committee to speculate. Do not over-explain or apologise excessively; state the facts and move forward to demonstrate what you have done since.

What makes an NCKU Study Plan stand out?+

Three things: specificity (naming actual NCKU faculty, labs, or programme features), evidence (showing rather than asserting — specific results, projects, or experiences), and clarity (a well-structured document that makes a coherent argument). A Study Plan that names the exact research group the applicant wants to join, connects that to prior relevant experience, and articulates a realistic plan for the degree and beyond is genuinely rare and immediately distinguishes itself from the field.
