What Emory Admissions Officers Are Looking For
Emory's admissions process is explicitly holistic. Every application is reviewed by multiple readers who evaluate academic performance, course rigour, extracurricular depth, essays, and recommendations together. Understanding what each dimension means — and why — is foundational to a strong application strategy.
Emory Financial Aid & Scholarships for International Students
Emory offers both merit-based and need-based financial support to international students, but the aid landscape for international applicants is more limited than for domestic students. Understanding what is available, and applying correctly, is essential.
Aid amounts and policies are subject to annual review. International students should confirm current eligibility and deadlines directly with Emory's Office of Financial Aid at studentaid.emory.edu.

Key Dates
Advantages
- Higher admission rate in both ED rounds vs RD
- Signals genuine first-choice commitment to Emory
- Earlier decision and planning certainty
- ED II gives a second chance at the early advantage in January
- Woodruff Scholar consideration — apply by 15 November
Disadvantages
- Both ED rounds are binding — you must enrol if admitted
- Cannot compare financial aid packages from multiple schools
- International need-based aid requires RD — not available to ED applicants
- ED I requires complete application by 1 November
- If deferred from ED I, may wait until April without other firm offers
Emory Interviews — What to Expect (and What to Do Instead)
Emory does not currently conduct alumni interviews or formal admissions interviews for undergraduate applicants. This is unlike Harvard, Yale, or Princeton, which offer alumni interviews to most applicants globally. At Emory, your written application — essays, recommendations, and the activities section — carries the full weight of communicating who you are as a person beyond your academic record.

Questions
Emory's Residential Life & Campus Housing
Emory does not use a 'house' or 'residential college' system like Harvard or Yale. Instead, the residential experience is organised around first-year cohort housing, themed living-learning communities (LLCs), and upperclassman options on the Atlanta campus — with a distinct residential experience at Oxford College.
Houses
Lottery Steps
- First-year students on the Atlanta campus are guaranteed on-campus housing in designated first-year residence halls
- Living-Learning Communities (Scholars, Global Health, Sustainability) place students with shared interests in the same hall
- Upperclassmen select from campus apartments and the Clairmont Campus apartment complex
- Oxford College students live on the Oxford campus for their first two years, then move to Atlanta for junior and senior year
- All residential options are within walking distance of core academic facilities or served by shuttle

Faqs
Does Emory give preference to Early Decision applicants?+
ED admission rates are historically higher than Regular Decision rates. However, international students who need to compare financial aid packages across multiple universities should apply RD — you cannot compare offers if you have a binding ED commitment. Woodruff Scholar consideration requires applying by 15 November regardless of round.
Is Emory test-optional for international students?+
Yes. Emory remains test-optional through at least the 2026–27 cycle for all applicants, including internationals. If you submit scores in the SAT 1470–1540 or ACT 32–34 range, they will likely help your application. If your scores fall below these bands, the optional policy gives you the choice not to submit.
Do I need to submit a TOEFL or IELTS?+
TOEFL or IELTS is recommended but not always required. Students who completed at least three years of secondary education where English was the only medium of instruction may petition for an exemption. Minimums are TOEFL 100 iBT, IELTS 7.5, or Duolingo 130. When in doubt, submit — a strong English test score reinforces your application.
Can international students receive financial aid at Emory?+
Yes, but it is limited. Emory is need-aware for international students and offers need-based financial aid packages to a select group of international applicants each year. Selection is highly competitive. You must apply Regular Decision and indicate need on your application. The Woodruff Scholars merit award is open to all citizens regardless.
What is the Emory Advantage Plus programme and does it apply to internationals?+
Starting Fall 2026, Emory Advantage Plus covers full tuition for eligible US families earning USD $200,000 or less. This programme primarily covers US-eligible students. International students should contact the Office of Financial Aid directly to understand their specific eligibility and CSS Profile requirements.
What GPA do I need to get into Emory?+
Emory looks for a minimum unweighted GPA of approximately 3.8 on a 4.0 scale. More importantly, they look for top performance in the most rigorous curriculum available — whether IB Diploma, A Levels, or a national board examination. Course rigour matters alongside the grade itself.
How does the Oxford College pathway work for international students?+
You can apply specifically to Oxford College or to Emory College (Atlanta campus). Oxford offers smaller classes, more intensive advising, and a tight-knit first-two-year community of ~900 students. After two years, Oxford students move to the Atlanta campus and graduate with the same Emory University degree. It is a genuine option — not a consolation — for students who prefer a small-college environment.
Does Emory conduct alumni interviews?+
No. Emory does not currently offer alumni interviews or formal admissions interviews for undergraduate applicants. Your written application — essays, recommendations, and the activities section — carries the full weight of communicating who you are as a person. Focus your preparation on writing exceptional supplemental answers.

Emory Academic Requirements
Emory Academic Requirements — The Honest Breakdown for International Students
What GPA, test scores, and academic profile do Emory's admitted students actually have? And what does Emory's holistic review mean for students from IB, A-Level, AP, and other international curricula?
GPA & Class Rank
Emory and GPA — What the Data Shows
The honest picture: Emory does not publish a minimum GPA in absolute terms. In practice, the vast majority of admitted students are in the top 10–15% of their graduating class, with unweighted GPAs at or above 3.8 on a 4.0 scale.
A 3.8 GPA is a floor, not a ceiling. What distinguishes admitted students is the combination of strong grades in genuinely rigorous courses. Grades without course rigour do not distinguish an Emory application.
Academic Context
Class Rank and School Context — How Emory Reads Academic Performance
Emory does not require class rank, and many international schools do not provide it. Emory's admissions office is experienced at evaluating academic performance across widely different school systems.

Advanced Placement
AP Courses at Emory — What Counts and What to Take
For students in the US system or at schools that offer AP courses, Advanced Placement performance is a meaningful component of the academic profile at Emory.
Academic Rigour
'Rigour of Secondary School Record' — Emory's Most Important Academic Factor
Emory lists 'rigour of secondary school record' as the most important academic factor in its admissions process — evaluated both through your transcript and through your school's counsellor report.
Taking the most challenging courses available at your specific school, in the subjects most relevant to your intellectual interests.
STEM & Subject Preparation
Mathematics, Science, and Humanities Preparation — What Emory Expects
Emory has no formal prerequisites for admission — students apply to a specific school (Emory College, Goizueta, Oxford College, or Nursing) and select major areas of interest. In practice, the most competitive applicants demonstrate subject-specific preparation that signals readiness for Emory's curriculum.
Language Proficiency
English Language Requirements for International Emory Applicants
Emory recommends an English proficiency test for non-native English speakers. Students who have completed a minimum of three years of secondary education where English was the sole medium of instruction may petition for an exemption.
Emory's application essays are themselves the most meaningful English proficiency assessment. A student who writes compelling, fluent essays demonstrates English capability far more convincingly than a borderline TOEFL score. Focus first on writing excellent essays.
By Major / School
Academic Requirements by Major and School — What Different Paths Expect
Emory considers intended major/school when evaluating applications — students apply to Emory College, Goizueta Business School, Oxford College, or Nursing directly. Academic profile should be coherent with the school and programme applied to.
| Signals | Expectation | Concentration |
|---|---|---|
| Research experience; science olympiad; lab work | HL Biology + HL Chemistry / A Level equivalents | Pre-Medicine / Biology |

Roadmap
Building an Academic Profile for Emory — What to Do at Each Stage
- Select IGCSE/MYP subjects that leave the widest possible options for IB or A-Level choices.
- Prioritise mathematics and sciences alongside strong humanities.
- Identify academic interests and explore them beyond the curriculum — independent reading, online courses, preliminary research exposure.
- Join one or two activities you genuinely care about — depth starts here.
- IB subject and level selection — HL choices should reflect genuine intellectual strengths, not grade optimisation.
- A-Level subject combination finalised — choose subjects coherent with intended major.
- Begin SAT or ACT diagnostic if applying to US universities.
- Identify summer research programmes to apply for (SURE, Emory-affiliated, or national programmes; deadlines typically in winter).
- Aim for the strongest possible IB or A-Level predicted grades.
- Pursue research actively — through a Tychr-facilitated programme, a competitive summer placement, or an independent project.
- Engage with academic competitions in your strongest subject area.
- Maintain or improve academic performance in Years 11–12.
- Begin preliminary university research — visit emory.edu/academics, read the admissions blog, identify specific programmes and faculty.
- Draft Common App personal statement over the summer before Year 13.
- Research Emory specifically — identify faculty, research centres, and courses for Short Answer #1.
- SAT/ACT completed if submitting.
- Submit ED I by 1 November if Emory is your clear first choice and you are not comparing financial aid.
- Submit ED II or RD by 1 January otherwise.

Real Outcomes
What Academic Profiles Tychr's Emory-Admitted Students Had
The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of students Tychr has helped gain Emory admission or equivalent outcomes. They illustrate the range of academic preparation that is effective — and what made each application compelling beyond raw grades.
Faqs
Is a 3.8 GPA enough for Emory?+
A 3.8 GPA is necessary but not sufficient. Emory receives applications from thousands of students with strong GPAs. The academic profile must combine good grades with rigorous course selection and supplementary intellectual engagement.
What IB score do I need for Emory?+
Competitive IB applicants to Emory typically have scores of 38 or above, with strong HL grades (6s and 7s) in subjects relevant to their intended major. Scores below 35 are below the competitive range for most Emory applicants.
Does Emory prefer SAT or ACT?+
No preference. Emory accepts both equally. Take the test that plays to your individual strengths — run a diagnostic of both before committing.
Can I apply to Emory without test scores?+
Yes. Emory is test-optional through 2026–27. For international students, Tychr generally recommends submitting strong scores (SAT 1470+ or ACT 32+) rather than going test-optional, as scores provide a standardised academic benchmark that complements international transcripts. Below-band scores are better withheld.
Does Emory accept students who weren't top of their class?+
Yes. Emory evaluates performance in context — a top performer at a school with limited resources is assessed differently from one at a school with every advantage. What matters is how fully you challenged yourself relative to what was available to you.
Financial Aid & Scholarships
Emory's Cost and Aid Landscape — What International Students Actually Pay.
Emory's sticker price exceeds $88,000 per year. For international students, the path to meaningful financial support runs through merit scholarships and a competitive need-based aid process. Here is the complete picture — costs, aid options, and exactly what to do to access every dollar available.
Cost Transparency
What Emory Actually Costs — The Full Annual Figure
Atlanta is significantly more affordable than New York, Boston, or San Francisco. On-campus housing reduces cost uncertainty. Budget separately for health insurance (~$2,000–$3,000/year for Emory's student plan), travel to and from home, and visa application fees. Costs typically increase 3–5% annually — budget for a four-year total in excess of $354,000 at current rates before aid.
Admissions Policy
Emory's Need-Aware Policy — What It Means for International Applicants
This is a key distinction from need-blind universities like Harvard, MIT, and Princeton. At Emory, applying for financial aid as an international student may marginally affect admission probability — the impact is real but modest compared to overall academic and extracurricular strength.

Financial Aid Walkthrough
Applying for Emory Financial Aid — The Process Step by Step
Financial aid at Emory is not automatic — it requires a separate process through the CSS Profile and IDOC document submission. Here is the complete step-by-step process for international applicants.
- Tick the financial aid intent field on the Common App
- This flag is essential — you cannot request aid retroactively for future years if not indicated in Year 1
- Submit application by 1 January (Regular Decision deadline)
- International need-based aid is only available to RD applicants — not ED I or ED II
- Register at cssprofile.collegeboard.org
- Report all income and assets in USD equivalents
- Both parents' financial information is typically required
- Non-custodial parent information needed if parents are separated or divorced
- Upload translated and certified tax documents through IDOC
- Ensure all documents are converted to USD
- Both parents' documents required unless legally separated
- Submit by the 5 February deadline
INTERNATIONAL AID
Emory Financial Aid for International Students — How It Works
Emory offers need-based financial aid packages to a select group of international students each year. The number of international need-based aid packages is limited compared to the volume of international applicants — selectivity for aid packages is even higher than selectivity for admission. Here is what the process looks like in practice.
FINANCIAL AID ESTIMATES
What Emory Financial Aid Looks Like for International Students
Emory Aid for International Applicants — Qualitative Overview
Emory does not publish specific income-band aid tables for international students. Figures above are qualitative. Individual packages are determined by the Financial Aid Office on a case-by-case basis through the CSS Profile process.
Unlike Harvard (where families under $85,000/year pay nothing), Emory does not publish income-band aid tables for international students. Aid is awarded on a case-by-case basis through the CSS Profile process. Students with significant financial need should apply RD, complete all documentation by 5 February, and then evaluate Emory's offer alongside offers from need-blind institutions before making an enrolment decision.
| Grant | Income | Contribution |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive merit package | Woodruff Scholars (all income levels) | Varies; merit-based |
| Potentially significant | International families with significant demonstrated need (RD only) | Determined by CSS Profile assessment |
| Limited to none | International families with moderate-to-high income | Full or near-full family contribution |

MERIT & NEED
Emory Scholarships and Aid — What Exists and Who Qualifies
Emory offers both need-based financial aid (through the CSS Profile process for RD applicants) and merit-based scholarships (Woodruff Scholars, open to all citizens). These are two separate programmes with different eligibility and processes.
EXTERNAL FUNDING
External Scholarships — Additional Funding for Emory Students
While Emory's institutional aid for international students is limited, numerous external organisations award scholarships to students attending Emory — providing additional funding that can substantially offset costs for qualifying students.
LOAN POLICY
Loans and Grants at Emory — What International Students Need to Know
Unlike Harvard (which has a full no-loan policy), Emory's financial aid packages for international students may include institutional loans alongside grant aid. Understanding this distinction is important for family financial planning.
STUDENT EMPLOYMENT
Campus Employment at Emory — What to Expect
International students on F-1 visas at Emory are permitted to work on campus up to 20 hours per week during the academic term and up to 40 hours during official university breaks. Emory's Student Employment Office lists on-campus positions across departments, labs, and services.
- Research assistant positions in faculty labs (particularly valuable for STEM and public health students — provides both income and CV-building experience)
- Library and administrative support roles
- Dining services (Cox Hall, Dobbs University Center, and residential dining)
- Tutoring and peer academic support through the PACE Centre
- Emory Office of Undergraduate Admissions ambassador and tour guide roles
- Technology and IT support across campus departments
- Carter Center and Rollins School volunteer and paid research roles

| Need-aware (internationals), very limited aid | Most other Top-30 US universities | No | ~$30,000–$70,000+ |
COST ANALYSIS
Emory vs. Alternatives — What You Actually Pay
For high-need international families, the counterintuitive conclusion is that Harvard or MIT — with sticker prices near or above Emory's — may cost significantly less than Emory if the family demonstrates strong financial need. The need-blind vs. need-aware distinction is the most important financial aid variable in US university selection for international families.
| Policy | School | Contribution | Four Year Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Need-blind, full-need, no loans | Harvard | ~$0 | ~$0 |
| Need-blind, full-need, no loans | MIT | ~$0 | ~$0 |
| Need-aware, competitive need-based + merit (Woodruff) | Emory | Varies significantly | $0–$354,000+ |
| Need-aware, limited international aid | Duke / Georgetown | ~$15,000–$30,000/year | ~$60,000–$120,000 |
| Very limited international aid | Most Top-30 US universities | ~$50,000–$88,000/year | ~$200,000–$354,000 |
| International tuition (variable) | UK Russell Group (London) | ~$30,000–$40,000/year | ~$120,000–$160,000 |
FINANCIAL APPEALS
Appealing an Emory Financial Aid Decision — When and How
Emory's initial financial aid offer is based on the information provided in the CSS Profile and IDOC documents. If circumstances have changed, or if the initial offer does not accurately reflect your family's financial situation, Emory has a review process.
The honest note: Emory's financial aid resources for international students are finite. Appeals are most successful when based on a genuine change in circumstances or a clear error in the CSS Profile assessment — not on a general desire for more money. Document any changed circumstances carefully and specifically.
How To Appeal
- Contact Emory's Office of Financial Aid directly at studentaid.emory.edu
- Submit a written appeal explaining the specific changed or misstated circumstances
- Provide documentation supporting the appeal (updated income verification, medical expenses, family crisis documentation, or other relevant evidence)
- Allow 2–3 weeks for a formal response from the Financial Aid office
When To Appeal
- Family financial circumstances have genuinely changed since the CSS Profile was submitted (job loss, medical emergency, family separation)
- The CSS Profile contained a factual error or significant omission
- The initial offer seems clearly inconsistent with your documented family financial situation
- A comparable peer institution has offered substantially different aid and you want Emory to review in that context
TIMELINE & PLANNING
Planning for Emory Costs — What to Do and When
APPLICATION ESSAYS
Writing Your Emory Essays The Supplements That Win Admission
Emory uses the Common Application. Beyond the Common App personal statement, applicants complete two Emory-specific short answer questions that are genuinely read and genuinely important. In a pool of academically qualified international students, your essays are often the deciding margin.
Emory's supplemental questions are intentionally short — 150 to 200 words each. That brevity is deceptive: short answers demand the kind of precision and specificity that longer essays can hide behind volume. This section covers both the Common App personal statement and Emory's own short answers, with sourced prompts and strategic guidance for international applicants.
OVERVIEW
How Many Essays Does Emory Require?
The Emory application through the Common App consists of three written components: the Common App Personal Statement (shared across all Common App schools, up to 650 words), plus two Emory-specific short answer questions. The total writing commitment is modest, but every word counts.
OFFICIAL PROMPTS · 2026-27
Emory's Supplemental Essay Prompts
PERSONAL STATEMENT STRATEGY
The Common App Personal Statement — Your Primary Narrative
The Common App personal statement is 650 words that Emory shares with every other school on your list. It should NOT be written for Emory specifically — it should be the most authentic and complete single-essay expression of who you are that you can produce. For international students, the personal statement is often the first place an admissions reader genuinely hears your voice. A student from Nairobi, Seoul, São Paulo, or Mumbai brings a perspective that readers in Atlanta may never have encountered. That is an asset — if you write with specificity and honesty rather than trying to sound like a generic American applicant. Avoid these common international student traps: essays that open with a description of your home country as exotic; essays that recount overcoming a dramatic hardship without genuine reflection on what you learned; and essays that amount to a restatement of your CV in narrative form. Instead, build your essay around a specific moment, object, relationship, or tension that reveals how you actually think and what you genuinely care about.
The Common App offers seven prompt choices — do not feel constrained to the one that sounds most impressive. The best personal statements often emerge from the most unexpected prompts. Let the story choose the prompt, not the other way around.
SUPPLEMENT STRATEGY
How to Approach Emory's Short Answers
Two short answers, 200 words and 150 words. The brevity demands clarity of thought and economy of expression — skills that Emory's academic environment will require of you every day.
TOPIC SELECTION
How to Choose What to Write About
Topic selection is where most applicants lose before they write a single word. The instinct to write about the most impressive-sounding experience — winning a national olympiad, leading a medical mission trip, founding a company — often produces essays that are paradoxically forgettable, because every other ambitious applicant had a similar instinct. For the Common App personal statement, ask yourself: what do I talk about when I am genuinely excited? What would my closest friend say is my most distinctive characteristic? What have I done that I could discuss for an hour without running out of things to say? Those are better starting points than 'what looks impressive.' For Emory's short answers, the question is simpler: what is the most specific, honest answer to this prompt from my actual life? Do not invent a story that fits — find the story you already have and fit it to the prompt.
ESSAY PITFALLS
Common Essay Mistakes to Avoid
- Writing a 'why Emory' answer that could have been written about any top-25 US university — 'great faculty, diverse campus, excellent research opportunities' says nothing specific about Emory.
- Exceeding the recommended word counts — Emory asks for approximately 200 and 150 words. Going significantly over signals that you cannot follow instructions or edit your own work.
- Using the essays to list achievements already in the activities section — the essays are for narrative and reflection, not a second CV.
- Writing the personal statement in a formal, academic register — the personal statement should sound like you talking at your best, not like a university application written in a second language.
- Treating the 'service to humanity' prompt as an opportunity for grand rhetoric — Emory's mission language is genuine, and hollow responses to it are easy for experienced readers to identify.
- Not proofreading for errors specific to non-native English — odd article usage, calque idioms, or register mismatches distract from otherwise strong content. Have a trusted native English reader review your drafts.
- Submitting without reading your entire application from start to finish — contradictions between essays, activities section, and recommendations create visible red flags in the holistic review.
ESSAY FAQs
Emory Essay FAQs for International Students
Do the Emory short answers change every year?+
Emory does update its short answer prompts, sometimes annually. Always verify the current prompts directly on the Emory admissions blog (blog.emoryadmission.com) or the Common App platform before writing. The 2026-27 prompts are sourced above.
Should I write the short answers in formal or informal English?+
Aim for clear, direct, conversational academic English — formal enough for a university context, but not so stiff that your personality disappears. Emory's admissions blog itself uses a friendly, accessible tone, which tells you something about the culture they are building.
Can I write my essays in a language other than English and have them translated?+
No. All application essays must be submitted in English. You are applying to study in an English-medium institution, and your ability to express yourself in English is itself part of what the essays assess.
How many drafts should I write?+
Plan for at least three to five drafts of each essay. The first draft gets the content out; subsequent drafts sharpen the focus, cut unnecessary words, and refine your voice. For 150–200 word answers, every sentence must earn its place.
Can I get help from a counsellor or teacher on my essays?+
Feedback from a trusted adult — a teacher, school counsellor, or professional admissions counsellor — is entirely appropriate. The essays should, however, remain authentically yours in voice and content. Admissions readers are experienced at identifying essays that sound ghostwritten.
Does Emory conduct interviews?+
Emory does not currently require or offer alumni interviews for undergraduate admission. Your application essays — particularly the two short answers — are the primary vehicle for communicating who you are beyond grades and test scores.
Is it better to apply to Emory College (Atlanta) or Oxford College?+
Apply to the campus that genuinely fits what you want from your first two years. Oxford College is not a back-door into Emory College — it is a legitimate choice for students who want a small-college liberal arts experience before transitioning to a large research university setting. If you would thrive in a community of ~900 students with small seminars and intensive advising, Oxford is worth serious consideration.
How specific should I be in Short Answer #1 about 'why Emory'?+
As specific as possible. Name a school (Goizueta, Rollins, Emory College), a programme, a professor, a research centre, or a course. 'Emory's strong pre-med programme' is not specific enough. 'Emory's proximity to the CDC and the Rollins School's dual-degree pathway, which would allow me to connect my existing fieldwork in malaria prevention with a structured MPH track' is the kind of specificity that reads as genuine.
