Aalto University is one of Europe's most innovative research universities — born in 2010 from the merger of three world-class Finnish institutions and now home to 13,000 students who blend technology, business, and art under one roof. Located in the Otaniemi campus of Espoo, a 10-minute metro ride from Helsinki, Aalto is where engineers collaborate with designers, data scientists work alongside economists, and startups spin out of seminar rooms. If you want a research-intensive, entrepreneurially charged education in the Nordic tradition — and you are ready to think across disciplinary boundaries — Aalto is a rare match.

Why Aalto — Triple Convergence of Tech, Business & Art

Aalto is the only university in the Nordic region that structurally unites engineering, business, and art & design at undergraduate level. Its Otaniemi campus sits at the centre of Europe's fastest-growing startup ecosystem, and its graduates have built some of the most consequential technology companies to emerge from Finland.

01Unique Interdisciplinary Structure
Six schools — Science, Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Business, and Arts, Design & Architecture — share one campus and actively encourage cross-school projects. No Finnish university offers this breadth under one roof.
02World-Class Research
Ranked #6 globally in Art & Design and #109 overall (QS 2025). Aalto operates Finland's largest cleanroom, one of Europe's biggest microscopy clusters, and the Metsähovi Radio Observatory. Undergraduate students can join research groups from Year 1.
03Nordic Five Tech Alliance
Aalto is a founding member of the N5T alliance alongside DTU, KTH, NTNU, and Chalmers — the five most research-intensive technical universities in the Nordic region, enabling joint programmes, exchange, and collaborative research.
04Startup Ecosystem
Slush, the world's leading startup and tech conference, was founded by Aalto students. The Design Factory, Startup Sauna, and Aaltoes incubate 70–100 startups per year. Half of all Finnish university startups originate from the Aalto community.
05Helsinki Capital Region
Espoo and Helsinki form Finland's tech and design hub — home to Nokia, Ericsson Networks, KONE, Wärtsilä, Supercell, Rovio, and a dense cleantech sector. The region offers one of Europe's best graduate employment markets in tech, engineering, and design.

Aalto Admissions Requirements — Grades, SAT/ACT & Academic Profile

IB Diploma
Value: IB 33+
The IB Diploma is one of the most respected qualifications at Aalto. For Science & Technology and Business programmes, IB grades are converted to a point score (max 172.1) and ranked against other applicants. A minimum of grade 2 in Mathematics and Chemistry or Physics is required for Science & Technology.
  • IB scores used directly in the admission scoring formula
  • Higher scores in maths and sciences yield more admission points
  • Extended Essay and TOK core contribute to the overall IB profile
  • Final (not predicted) IB scores required by the document deadline
SAT / ACT (Science & Tech)
Value: SAT 1350+ / ACT 29+
Aalto uniquely accepts SAT/ACT as an alternative admission route for Science & Technology and Business programmes — you apply via test scores instead of IB/EB grades, not in addition. For Science & Technology: minimum SAT 1350 total and SAT Math 700 (or ACT 29 composite and ACT Math 30).
  • SAT and ACT scores are an official admission route — not supplementary
  • Science & Tech: SAT 1350 total + 700 Math, or ACT 29 + 30 Math
  • Business: SAT 1200 total, or ACT 25
  • Scores must be from tests taken after January 1, 2024
Design & Media (Multi-Stage)
Value: Portfolio Tasks
The Design & Media programme uses a multi-stage selection: preliminary assignments submitted online, followed by intake assignments and in-person interviews for shortlisted candidates. No portfolio is required upfront — the tasks are set by Aalto and completed during the process.
  • Stage 1: Preliminary assignment submitted by the application deadline
  • Stage 2: Intake assignment for shortlisted applicants
  • Stage 3: In-person interview at Aalto
  • English language test mandatory for Design & Media applicants

Aalto Application Components — Studyinfo, Scores & Documents

Aalto uses Finland's national Studyinfo (opintopolku.fi) portal for all applications. Unlike US universities, Aalto's bachelor's application does not require references, personal statements, or extracurricular records — selection is based entirely on academic performance and, for Design & Media, creative tasks.

01RequiredStudyinfo Application
All applications go through studyinfo.fi. You may apply to up to three study options. The application window opens once per year in January.
02Required (most programmes)Academic Transcripts
Official upper secondary school transcripts or diploma. Final-year students may apply conditionally — final credentials must arrive at Aalto by the document deadline.
03Required (Science & Tech / Business)SAT or ACT Score Report OR IB/EB Grades
Choose one route: submit official SAT/ACT scores via College Board/ACT, or use your IB Diploma, European Baccalaureate, Finnish Matriculation, or DIA grades. Scores must arrive by the test deadline (typically Jan 29 of the application year).
04Required (Design & Media only)English Language Proof
IELTS, TOEFL, Duolingo, or equivalent proof of English proficiency. The only programme where an official language certificate is mandatory at bachelor's level.
05Required (Design & Media only)Preliminary & Intake Assignments
Aalto sets specific creative tasks — preliminary assignments submitted with the application, intake assignments for shortlisted candidates. These are the primary selection criteria for Design & Media.
06Required (non-EU/EEA)Application Fee
A non-refundable application fee is required from non-EU/EEA citizens. The fee is not related to the admission outcome.

Aalto Application — No Essays, But Academic Precision Matters

Aalto's English-taught bachelor's programmes do not require personal statements, references, or supplemental essays. Admission for Science & Technology and Business programmes is based purely on academic performance (IB/EB grades or SAT/ACT scores). Design & Media uses creative assignment tasks set by the university — not open-ended personal essays.

Tips

Your grades or SAT/ACT score are your application
Aalto scores every applicant on a transparent formula using IB/EB grades or SAT/ACT results. There is no holistic review, no personality assessment, no interview for most programmes. Maximise your mathematics and science scores.
Apply early in the window
The January application window is short (typically 2 weeks). Prepare all documents — transcripts, score reports, language certificates — well before it opens. Missing the document deadline disqualifies an otherwise complete application.
Choose your route carefully
For Science & Technology, model your expected admission score under both the IB-grade route and the SAT/ACT route before the window opens. Some IB students score more highly on the SAT route and vice versa.
Design applicants: the assignments are everything
For Design & Media, the preliminary assignment and intake assignment are the admission criteria. Study previous years' tasks (Aalto publishes them), understand the evaluation criteria, and treat each task as a professional brief.

Prompts

Science & Technology / Business
No personal statement or essay required. Admission is based entirely on IB/EB grade scores or SAT/ACT results, converted to a transparent point scale and ranked.
Design & Media — Preliminary Assignment
A creative task set by Aalto, submitted with the application. The specific brief changes each year and is announced at the opening of the application window.
Design & Media — Intake Assignment
A second assignment for shortlisted applicants, completed under time conditions. Evaluates creative problem-solving, concept communication, and design thinking.
The most common Aalto application mistake. Treating the application like a US university process — spending time on essays and extracurriculars instead of optimising grades and standardised test scores, which are the only things Aalto actually evaluates.

What Aalto Admissions Is Looking For

Unlike US universities that use holistic review, Aalto's selection for Science & Technology and Business is transparent and formula-based — grades and test scores converted to points. What distinguishes admitted students is the strength of their quantitative and scientific preparation.

01Mathematical Excellence
For Science & Technology, advanced mathematics is both a threshold requirement and the highest-weighted component in the admission formula. Students who take HL Mathematics at IB or equivalent at the hardest available level stand out.
02Science & Technical Depth
Chemistry and Physics are core subjects in the Science & Technology formula. Strong performance in both is expected; the programme requires demonstrated competence in quantitative sciences, not just mathematics.
03Consistency Across Subjects
Aalto's formula rewards overall academic strength across five qualifying subjects. A student with one very high score and weak others scores less than one with consistently high performance across all five.
04Creative Problem-Solving (Design & Media)
For Design & Media, Aalto looks for conceptual thinking, communication of ideas under constraints, and creative ambition — demonstrated through the tasks they set, not through a portfolio submitted upfront.
05English Proficiency (Design & Media)
The only programme requiring a formal English test at bachelor's level. IELTS 6.5, TOEFL 92, or Duolingo 120 are the verified minimums. Other programmes trust the language of your prior schooling.
06Final, Not Predicted, Results
Aalto accepts applications from final-year students conditionally, but admission is confirmed only on final results. Students who receive conditional offers must submit final results by the document deadline — typically late June.

Aalto Financial Aid & Scholarships for International Students

Aalto's primary aid mechanism for non-EU/EEA students is the Aalto University Excellence Scholarship — a full tuition fee waiver awarded on merit to the highest-achieving admitted applicants. It does not cover living costs. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens pay no tuition at all under Finnish law.

Scholarship amounts and eligibility are subject to change. Verify current figures at aalto.fi/en/international-students/tuition-fees-and-scholarships before applying.

The Finnish Student Support System. Finland's national student support (Kela) provides a study grant and government-guaranteed student loan available to all students studying in Finland, including many international students who hold a residence permit. This is a separate system from Aalto's scholarship — it provides a living allowance supplement, not tuition coverage.

Questions

Walk us through your preliminary assignment — what was your thinking process?
Tip: Be prepared to articulate your conceptual decisions, not just the outcome. Aalto values how you think, not just what you produce.
How do you approach a design problem with constraints you haven't encountered before?
Tip: Demonstrate flexibility, curiosity, and comfort with ambiguity. Rigid process descriptions impress less than adaptive thinking.
What does design mean to you beyond aesthetics?
Tip: Aalto's design tradition is functional and systems-oriented. Showing awareness of design as problem-solving — not just visual craft — aligns with the school's ethos.

Aalto Student Housing & Residential Life

Aalto University does not operate a residential college system. Instead, students arrange housing independently through two main student housing organisations: AYY (Aalto University Student Union) and HOAS (Foundation for Student Housing in the Helsinki Region). The Teekkarikylä student village, adjacent to the Otaniemi campus, is the cultural heart of Aalto student life and home to over 2,000 residents.

Lotteries

  • AYY student apartments are mostly located directly on or adjacent to the Otaniemi campus — closest to lectures, the library, and student facilities.
  • HOAS offers apartments across Espoo and greater Helsinki, with the closest clusters in Otaniemi-Teekkarikylä and Otaniemi-Tapiola.
  • Teekkarikylä (the 'Engineers' Village') is the legendary student village on campus — a self-contained community with saunas, sports facilities, and a distinctive engineering student culture.
  • Private rental is available in Espoo and Helsinki, though typically more expensive. A 2-bedroom apartment in Espoo averages €1,200–€1,600/month; shared student housing runs €400–€700/month per person.
  • Apply for AYY and HOAS housing as early as possible — allocations are competitive and do not guarantee campus proximity.

Faqs

Does Aalto teach its programmes in English?+

Yes — the programmes listed for English-taught bachelor's admission (Design and Media, Economics, International Business, Chemical Engineering, Computational Engineering, Computer Engineering, Data Science, Digital Systems and Design, Quantum Technology) are fully taught in English. Finnish or Swedish proficiency is not required for these programmes, though it is an advantage for daily life and some student activities.

Do EU/EEA students pay tuition at Aalto?+

No. Under Finnish law, citizens of EU/EEA member states and Switzerland are fully exempt from tuition fees at all Finnish universities, including Aalto. Non-EU/EEA citizens pay programme-specific annual tuition fees.

Can I apply to multiple programmes at Aalto?+

Yes. You may apply to up to three study options in a single Studyinfo application. Your three choices are ranked by priority, and admission is considered for each independently.

Is there a minimum IB score for Aalto University?+

The facts file indicates an IB minimum band of 33. In practice, the Science & Technology admission formula also requires a minimum grade 2 in Mathematics and grade 2 in Chemistry or Physics. Competitive admitted applicants typically score higher than 33, with stronger mathematics and science subject scores.

Does Aalto accept SAT/ACT scores?+

Yes — uniquely among Finnish universities, Aalto accepts SAT or ACT scores as an official admission route for Science & Technology and Business programmes. For Science & Technology, the minimum is SAT 1350 total + 700 Math, or ACT 29 composite + 30 Math. For Business, it is SAT 1200 or ACT 25. Scores must be from tests taken after January 1, 2024.

What happens after completing an Aalto bachelor's degree?+

Aalto bachelor's graduates have automatic right to apply to Aalto master's programmes in their field. The BSc+MSc pathway (3+2 years) is the standard route. Students who received the Excellence Scholarship for their BSc may also qualify for a Continuation Scholarship covering master's tuition fees if they maintain a grade average of at least 3.50.

Can international graduates work in Finland after Aalto?+

Yes. Finland offers a 2-year post-study residence permit for graduates of Finnish universities, allowing Aalto graduates to seek employment in Finland after completing their degree. The Helsinki-Espoo region has a strong market for tech, engineering, and design graduates.

Is there housing on the Aalto campus?+

GPA & Grade Requirements

Aalto and GPA — What the Formula Shows

Aalto does not use a GPA threshold in the US sense. Selection is based on a point formula that converts grades from recognised qualification systems (IB, EB, Finnish Matriculation, DIA) into a maximum 172.1-point score, with mathematics and sciences carrying the highest weight.

The minimum IB band of 33 is a threshold, not a target. For competitive programmes like Computer Engineering, Data Science, and Design & Media, the realistic admitted range is higher. Contact specific programmes for historical admission score data.

3.3
Minimum GPA equivalent (indicative)
172.1
Max admission points available
What this means for international students. Students from non-Finnish school systems are evaluated using their IB Diploma, European Baccalaureate, or equivalent grades converted into Aalto's point scale. A student with a 3.3 US GPA equivalent meets the minimum threshold, but admitted students to competitive programmes typically score well above the minimum across all five qualifying subjects.
Grade profile matters more than a single number. Aalto's formula uses five subjects. Strong performance across all five — particularly in mathematics and sciences — outweighs a single exceptional subject with weak others. A student who takes and excels in advanced mathematics has a structural advantage in the Science & Technology formula.

Academic Context

How Aalto Reads Academic Performance Across Systems

Aalto's admission formula is designed to compare students across different qualification systems on equal terms. Each system has its own conversion table that maps grades to admission points.

How Aalto contextualises your academic record
The conversion tables for IB, EB, Finnish Matriculation, and DIA/RP are published by Aalto. Each table maps grades directly to admission points. There is no school-profile adjustment or holistic contextualisation — it is a direct, transparent grade-to-point conversion.
What this means practically
Unlike Harvard or US universities, Aalto does not consider the difficulty of your specific school's curriculum relative to peer schools. The grade you achieve in IB HL Mathematics is worth the same admission points regardless of where you studied. This makes the system objectively fair — but it also means that earning the highest possible grades in the most mathematically rigorous subjects is the only lever available.
For students from less common qualification systems. Students from qualification systems other than IB, EB, Finnish Matriculation, and DIA must typically apply via the SAT or ACT route for Science & Technology and Business programmes. Confirm your qualification's eligibility directly with Aalto Admission Services before the application window opens.

Standardised Testing

SAT Scores at Aalto — What You Need and Why It Works Differently

Unlike most European universities, Aalto accepts SAT scores as a direct admission route (not supplementary evidence) for Science & Technology and Business programmes. For Science & Technology, the minimum is SAT total 1350 AND SAT Math 700.

LabelScorePercent
SAT Total Minimum (Sci & Tech)135066
SAT Math Minimum (Sci & Tech)70087
SAT Total Minimum (Business)120058
Why the Math subscore has a separate minimum. Aalto's Science & Technology programmes are quantitatively intensive. The separate SAT Math floor (700) ensures applicants have demonstrated mathematical readiness. A high overall SAT score with a weak Math subscore does not meet the requirement — both thresholds must be cleared simultaneously.
SAT vs IB route — which is better for you?. Run the numbers on both routes before deciding. Convert your IB predicted grades to Aalto's admission point scale and compare to the point score implied by your SAT result. Some IB students find the SAT route yields a higher admission score; others do better on the IB route. TYCHR can run this calculation for you.
Preparation. For students targeting the SAT route to Aalto, focus disproportionately on the Math section. A 700+ Math score is required; students scoring below 700 in Math should pursue intensive SAT Math preparation before testing. TYCHR's SAT programme averages significant improvement in the Math subsection specifically.

Standardised Testing

ACT Scores at Aalto — Minimums and Strategy

The ACT is accepted as an equivalent alternative to the SAT for Aalto admission. For Science & Technology: ACT composite 29 AND ACT Math 30. For Business: ACT composite 25.

Comparison Cards

Both accepted equally
Aalto does not prefer one test. Submit the one you score higher on. The key is meeting both the composite and the Math sub-score minimums.
ACT Math floor is higher
The ACT Math minimum of 30 (out of 36) is equivalent to approximately the 70th percentile — a genuinely demanding requirement. Students with strong pure mathematics preparation typically find this achievable.
Superscore policy
Aalto's FAQ does not confirm a superscore policy. To be safe, aim for the required minimums in a single sitting rather than relying on superscoring across multiple tests.
Test score validity. Aalto requires SAT and ACT scores from tests taken after January 1, 2024, and scores must be delivered by the score deadline (typically January 29 of the application year). Plan test dates in October–November of your application year to ensure results are available in time.
TYCHR's recommendation. Take diagnostic tests for both SAT and ACT. If your ACT Math diagnostic is at 30 or above, the ACT may be your stronger route. If your SAT Math section is consistently at 700+, the SAT is equally strong. The critical variable is the Math sub-score — optimise for that first.

Testing Strategy

Aalto's SAT/ACT Route — When to Use It vs. When to Use Your IB Grades

Aalto is neither test-optional nor test-required in the US sense. Instead, it offers two parallel admission routes: the grade-based route (IB, EB, Finnish Matriculation, DIA) and the standardised test route (SAT or ACT). You choose which route to use based on where you score higher in Aalto's formula.

Submit Items

Your SAT score is 1400+ (total) with 720+ in Math for Science & Tech — the conversion is likely competitive.
Your IB grades are in the 33–36 range — the SAT route may yield more admission points.
You are from a qualification system other than IB/EB/FM/DIA and need an alternative route.

Withhold Items

Your IB score is 38+ with strong mathematics and science subjects — the grade route typically yields more points at higher IB bands.
Your SAT Math is below 700 — you will not meet the minimum for Science & Technology regardless of total score.
The two-route system. Applicants self-select into the route that maximises their admission score. If your IB predicted/achieved grades convert to a higher point score than your SAT/ACT result, use the grade route. If your SAT/ACT result converts to more points, use the test route. You cannot combine both routes in the same application.
Common misconception. Many international students assume Aalto requires SAT/ACT scores the way US universities do. It doesn't — the tests are one optional route. IB Diploma holders, European Baccalaureate graduates, and students from Finnish schools do not need to take the SAT or ACT at all unless the test route gives them a higher admission score.

Curricula

IB, A-Levels & European Baccalaureate at Aalto — What Each System Needs

  • {"label":"Science requirement (Sci & Tech)","value":"Minimum grade 2 in Chemistry or Physics"}
  • {"label":"Maximum admission points","value":"172.1"}
Note: IB grades across five subjects are converted to Aalto's point scale, with mathematics and sciences weighted most heavily for Science & Technology programmes. Taking HL Mathematics Analysis & Approaches and HL Physics or HL Chemistry is strategically optimal for Science & Tech admission.
European Baccalaureate (EB)

  • {"label":"Science requirement","value":"Minimum grade 6 in one qualifying subject"}
  • {"label":"Point conversion","value":"Numerical grades 5.00–9.00 mapped to admission points"}
Note: EB grades are mapped to Aalto's formula using the same 172.1 maximum. Students from European Schools (Accredited European Schools) follow the same conversion table.
A-Levels
  • {"label":"A-Level status","value":"Not in the grade-based formula for Sci & Tech or Business"}
  • {"label":"Alternative route","value":"A-Level students typically use the SAT/ACT route"}
  • {"label":"Confirm with Aalto","value":"Check current policy at admissions@aalto.fi"}
Note: A-Level graduates are not explicitly listed in Aalto's grade-based conversion tables for Science & Technology or Business. A-Level students should verify current policy directly with Aalto and consider the SAT/ACT route as a primary strategy.

Advanced Placement & Equivalent

AP Courses at Aalto — How They Are (and Are Not) Used

Aalto does not use AP exam scores as part of its admission formula. For most international students, AP courses are not relevant to Aalto's bachelor's selection process.

AP is not an admission criterion
Aalto's admission for Science & Technology and Business is based on IB/EB/FM/DIA grades or SAT/ACT scores — AP exam results are not in the formula and are not submitted as part of the application. Students at US-curriculum schools should focus on their SAT/ACT scores for Aalto.
What US-curriculum students should do
Students who have completed AP Mathematics (Calculus BC), AP Physics, or AP Chemistry demonstrate the mathematical and scientific preparation Aalto values — but this is expressed through SAT/ACT scores in the admission process, not AP exam grades. Focus your preparation on achieving SAT 1350+/Math 700+ or ACT 29+/Math 30+.
AP credit after admission
Once admitted, Aalto may grant credit exemptions for AP scores in relevant subjects, allowing advanced students to bypass introductory coursework. This is assessed case-by-case after admission — confirm with your programme on arrival.
IB, EB, and European school students: your qualification's grades are directly in the formula. Focus on maximising your IB/EB mathematics and science grades rather than pursuing additional AP courses.
AP course credit at Aalto: Inquire with your specific programme after admission. Finnish universities are generally flexible about recognising prior learning but it is assessed individually.

Academic Rigour

Rigour of Secondary School — How Aalto Evaluates Course Ambition

Aalto's grade-based formula rewards students who take the most mathematically rigorous version of their qualification. For IB students, this means taking Mathematics at Higher Level (Analysis & Approaches preferred). For EB students, it means advanced mathematics. The grade itself earns more points when it comes from a harder subject.

The student who takes IB HL Mathematics AA and earns a 6 often scores more admission points than one who takes SL Mathematics and earns a 7.

What rigour means in practice at Aalto. In Aalto's formula, the subject you take and the level you take it at directly affects the admission points available in that subject slot. Higher-level or advanced-track subjects carry more maximum points. Choosing easier options to protect grades can backfire — the ceiling for that subject is lower.
The contextual element. Aalto's formula is transparent but does not contextualise for school environment the way US holistic review does. A grade 6 in IB HL Mathematics AA earns the same points regardless of whether the student attended a competitive international school or a small school with few IB options.
The subjects Aalto rewards most. For Science & Technology: HL Mathematics (AA or AI), HL Physics, HL Chemistry, HL Computer Science. For Business: HL Economics, HL Mathematics, strong performance in languages. These are the subjects with the highest point ceilings in the admission formula.

Subject Preparation

What Aalto Expects in Mathematics and Sciences

Aalto's Science & Technology programmes are among the most mathematically demanding in the Nordic region. The admission formula reflects this: mathematics and sciences carry the highest weight. Students who arrive underprepared in calculus or physics find the coursework extremely challenging from Week 1.

Mathematics
HL Mathematics: Analysis & Approaches (IB) is the optimal preparation for Science & Technology programmes. The Aalto BSc in Science & Technology begins with university-level calculus and linear algebra from the first semester. Students who took SL Mathematics or Mathematics: Applications & Interpretation are significantly underprepared for the pace.
Physics & Chemistry
Both are qualifying subjects in the admission formula for Science & Technology. HL Physics (IB) or equivalent preparation is expected for Engineering and Electrical Engineering programmes. Chemical Engineering requires strong chemistry preparation — HL Chemistry (IB) or equivalent.
Computer Science / Programming
Not a formal admission requirement, but students admitted to Computer Engineering, Computational Engineering, and Data Science are expected to have at least basic programming experience. Python or similar language experience from school is strongly recommended before arrival.

Language Proficiency

English Language Requirements for International Aalto Applicants

Aalto requires formal English language proof only for the Design & Media programme at bachelor's level. Science & Technology and Business programmes do not require an official English certificate — but the programmes are fully taught in English and students are expected to operate at an academic level in the language.

For Design & Media applicants: the English test is mandatory with no exceptions, regardless of the language of your prior schooling. IELTS 6.5 and TOEFL 92 are genuine minimums — not aspirational targets. Confirm test validity periods (typically 2 years) before the application window.

Test: IELTS
Score: 6.5
Test: TOEFL iBT
Score: 92
Test: Duolingo English Test
Score: 120
Practical guidance. Even if a formal certificate is not required for your programme, ensure your English is genuinely at an academic level before arrival. Lectures, seminars, group projects, and thesis work are all in English. Students whose schooling was in a non-English language and who are applying to Science & Technology or Business should assess their English readiness honestly — and consider taking IELTS or TOEFL to confirm the level.

International Systems

How Aalto Evaluates International Education Systems

IB Diploma
Well understood and directly in the admission formula. Aalto publishes explicit conversion tables mapping IB grades (7–2) across five subjects to admission points. Higher Level subjects in mathematics and sciences earn more points than Standard Level. The IB is one of the strongest qualifications for Aalto admission.
European Baccalaureate (EB)
Directly in the formula alongside IB and Finnish Matriculation. EB numerical grades (5.00–9.00) are mapped to admission points. Students from European Schools are well served by the EB route.
Finnish Matriculation Examination
The primary qualification for Finnish domestic applicants and for international students who completed Finnish upper secondary. Grades (L, E, M, C, B, A) are mapped to the same admission point scale. Advanced mathematics (pitkä matematiikka) is required for Science & Technology.
A-Levels (UK/Cambridge/Edexcel)
A-Levels are not in Aalto's published grade-based formula for Science & Technology or Business. A-Level graduates should consult Aalto Admission Services directly and consider the SAT/ACT route as a primary strategy. This situation may change — verify the current policy at admissions@aalto.fi before each application cycle.
Other international qualifications
Students from the US AP system, Indian CBSE/ISC, Chinese Gaokao, or other systems not listed in Aalto's conversion tables typically apply via the SAT/ACT route. Confirm your qualification's eligibility directly with Aalto before the window opens.

Roadmap

Building an Academic Profile for Aalto — What to Do at Each Stage

Year 10 (Grade 9–10)Choose the right qualification track
Year: Year 10 (Grade 9–10)
  • Select the IB Diploma or European Baccalaureate if these are available at your school — both are in Aalto's grade formula.
  • Prioritise mathematics: if offered, select the advanced mathematics track (IB HL Mathematics AA is the gold standard for Science & Technology).
  • Identify whether you will rely on the grade route or the SAT/ACT route early — it affects which tests to prepare for.
Year 11 (Grade 10–11)Lock in your highest-weight subjects
Year: Year 11 (Grade 10–11)
  • For IB: finalise HL selections with mathematics and sciences in the highest-weight positions. HL Mathematics AA + HL Physics or Chemistry is the optimal Science & Tech combination.
  • If considering the SAT/ACT route, begin preparation no later than Year 11 to allow multiple test sittings.
  • Model your expected admission score under both the IB-grade route and SAT/ACT route based on current performance.
Year 12 (Grade 11–12)Build the evidence
Year: Year 12 (Grade 11–12)
  • Sit SAT/ACT by October–November to ensure scores arrive before the January deadline. Plan for at least one resit opportunity.
  • For Design & Media: study previous years' Aalto preliminary assignment briefs to understand the task format and evaluation criteria.
  • Confirm your English language test score (IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo) if applying to Design & Media.
Year 13 (Grade 12)Application year — the January window
Year: Year 13 (Grade 12)
  • Prepare all documents before the January window: transcripts, score reports, language certificates.
  • Open Studyinfo.fi on the first day of the application window and submit as early as possible.
  • For conditional admits: final IB or EB results must be submitted by the summer document deadline.

Common Pitfalls

Academic Mistakes That Cost Aalto Applications — And How to Avoid Them

Taking SL Mathematics when HL is available
For Science & Technology, the admission formula assigns more maximum points to HL Mathematics than SL. A student who takes SL Mathematics to protect their grade effectively caps their own admission score. The formula rewards choosing hard subjects over easy grades.
Missing the SAT/ACT score deadline
Aalto's score deadline (typically January 29 of the application year) is earlier than the application deadline itself. Students who book their SAT test too late — or fail to request official score reports to Aalto in time — are disqualified. Plan test dates in October at the latest.
Assuming A-Levels are in the grade formula
Many international students with A-Levels assume they can use their grades directly in Aalto's admission formula. A-Levels are not in the published conversion tables for Science & Technology or Business. Checking this assumption before the application window is critical.
Applying without checking the language certificate requirement for Design & Media
Aalto is explicit: there are no exceptions to the English language certificate requirement for Design & Media. A missing certificate means the application is rejected as incomplete. IELTS/TOEFL results must arrive by the document deadline.
Not modelling both admission routes before deciding
Many students use only one route by default without calculating which gives them more admission points. TYCHR's formula modelling service runs this comparison — students sometimes find they score 15–20 more admission points on the non-obvious route.

Real Outcomes

What Academic Profiles TYCHR's Aalto-Admitted Students Had

The following profiles represent the academic backgrounds of students TYCHR has guided to Aalto University admission. They illustrate the range of academic preparation that works — and what made each application compelling.

Profile 1 — Science & Technology (IB Route)
Stats: IB 38 · HL Maths AA 6 · HL Physics 7 · HL Chemistry 6
Applied to Computer Engineering via the grade route. Strongest subject was HL Physics (7). Aalto's point formula rewarded the combination of three strong science subjects over a higher overall IB score with weaker subject selection.
Takeaway: The programme and subject combination — not the total IB score — was the decisive factor. A student with IB 38 and strong sciences outscored some applicants with IB 40 and weaker science profiles in the formula.
Profile 2 — Science & Technology (SAT Route)
Stats: IB 35 · SAT 1420 · SAT Math 750
The IB grade route would have yielded approximately 120 admission points. The SAT route yielded an estimated 145 points. Switched to SAT route after TYCHR modelled both options.
Takeaway: Formula modelling before the window opens is not optional — it is the most important strategic decision for applicants who have both IB grades and SAT scores available.
Profile 3 — Design & Media
Stats: Finnish Matriculation grades + strong preliminary assignment
Applied through the Design & Media multi-stage process. Studied three years of previous Aalto preliminary assignment briefs, worked with a TYCHR design coach on the intake assignment, and prepared for the interview by practising concept communication under time pressure.
Takeaway: For Design & Media, preparation for the creative tasks is the application. Academic grades matter less than for Science & Technology — the assignment and interview determine admission.

Faqs

What IB score do I need for Aalto?+

The minimum IB band is 33. Competitive admits for Science & Technology programmes typically score higher, with strong performance in HL Mathematics and sciences. The admission formula converts five IB subject grades to points (maximum 172.1), so the subjects you choose and the grades you achieve in each matter as much as the overall score.

Can I use my SAT score for Aalto admission?+

Yes. Aalto accepts SAT scores as an official admission route for Science & Technology and Business. For Science & Technology, you need SAT 1350 total AND SAT Math 700 as minimums. For Business, SAT 1200 total. Scores must be from tests taken after January 1, 2024 and must arrive at Aalto by the published score deadline.

Do I need to submit my SAT score if I have an IB diploma?+

No. You choose one route. If your IB grades convert to more admission points than your SAT score, use the grade route and don't submit SAT scores. If your SAT is stronger, use the test route. TYCHR can model both to find your optimal route.

Does Aalto interview applicants?+

Only for Design & Media — where shortlisted applicants are invited to an in-person interview as part of the multi-stage selection process. Science & Technology and Business programmes do not interview applicants — selection is entirely formula-based.

Is it true that A-Level students can't use their grades at Aalto?+

A-Levels are not listed in Aalto's published grade-based conversion tables for Science & Technology or Business. A-Level students should verify current policy with Aalto and consider the SAT/ACT route as a primary strategy. Policy can change year to year — always confirm at admissions@aalto.fi.

Financial Aid & Scholarships

Aalto University Costs — What International Students Actually Pay

EU/EEA students pay zero tuition at Aalto. Non-EU/EEA students pay programme fees of €12,000–15,000/year and compete for the Aalto Excellence Scholarship — a full tuition waiver. Here is the complete picture of what Aalto costs, what aid is available, and how to access it.

What Aalto Actually Costs — The Full Annual Figure

Aalto's total cost of attendance for non-EU/EEA students (~$27,600/year) is substantially lower than comparable research universities in the US or UK. For EU/EEA students, the cost is purely cost-of-living — roughly $13,000/year in the Helsinki/Espoo region. The Excellence Scholarship reduces non-EU/EEA costs to living-cost level only.

Finnish Higher Education System

Aalto's Tuition Structure — EU Exemption and Non-EU Fees

Non-EU/EEA citizens: Programme fees of €12,000/year (Business & Technology) or €15,000/year (Arts & Architecture). EU/EEA and Swiss citizens: no tuition. Doctoral students: no tuition regardless of nationality. Finnish-medium programmes: no tuition regardless of nationality.

Why this matters for international applicants. An EU citizen applying to Aalto pays the same as a Finnish student — zero tuition. This makes Aalto one of the most cost-effective research universities in the world for EU citizens. For non-EU students, the tuition fee is modest by global standards, but the Excellence Scholarship can reduce it to zero for the highest-achieving admitted students.
After admission — what happens with non-EU tuition. Non-EU/EEA students who are admitted receive information on tuition payment through Flywire's platform. Tuition must be paid annually before enrolment. Scholarship recipients receive a fee waiver and do not pay the fee during the scholarship period.
Under Finnish law, citizens of EU/EEA member states and Switzerland are fully exempt from tuition fees at all Finnish universities. This is a legal entitlement, not a scholarship — no application is required. Non-EU/EEA students pay programme-specific annual fees.

Institutional Commitment

Finland's Commitment to Accessible Education — Why Aalto Costs What It Does

State-Funded University System
Subtitle: Public institution, subsidised education
Aalto receives the majority of its operating budget from the Finnish government, keeping tuition fees low relative to the quality of education. EU/EEA student tuition is entirely state-funded. Non-EU fees are regulated and comparatively modest.
Expanding International Access
Subtitle: Non-EU fees introduced 2017
Finland introduced tuition fees for non-EU/EEA students in 2017. Alongside the fee introduction, Finnish universities established scholarship programmes to ensure the best international students could still access Finnish higher education regardless of ability to pay.
QS Art & Design — Aalto's global ranking. Finland's public university system provides world-class research university education at a fraction of the cost of comparable institutions in the US or UK. Aalto's tuition fees for non-EU students (€12,000–15,000/year) are set at cost-recovery level, not profit generation.
"We believe in open science, open learning and the free flow of ideas. Aalto is for people who want to change the world."

Aid for International Students

Aalto Financial Aid for International Students — How It Works

Aalto's financial aid for non-EU/EEA international students works through three layers: the Finnish law EU exemption (for eligible students), the Aalto Excellence Scholarship (merit-based, full tuition waiver), and Finland's national student support system (Kela) for students with a Finnish residence permit.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens — zero tuition
EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens pay no tuition at Aalto by legal right. This is not a scholarship and requires no application. The only costs are living costs — estimated at €11,000–13,000/year in the Espoo/Helsinki region.
Aalto Excellence Scholarship — full tuition waiver
For non-EU/EEA students, the Excellence Scholarship covers 100% of the annual tuition fee. It is awarded on merit to the highest-achieving applicants and does not cover living costs. The scholarship must be maintained through annual progress requirements (min 45 ECTS/year).
Kela student support for international students
Students who hold a Finnish residence permit and are studying full-time may be eligible for Finland's national study grant (Kela opintotuki) — a monthly living allowance and government-guaranteed student loan. Eligibility depends on residence permit type and is confirmed by Kela after arrival.
25% early-acceptance tuition discount (Year 1)
All new non-EU/EEA bachelor's students who accept their offer and pay tuition by the stated early deadline receive a 25% reduction on first-year tuition — reducing Business/Tech fees from €12,000 to €9,000 for Year 1.

Scholarship Criteria

Aalto Scholarships — Merit-Based, Not Need-Based

Aalto University does not offer need-based financial aid. All institutional aid (the Excellence Scholarship) is merit-based — awarded to the highest-achieving applicants based on their position in the admission ranking, regardless of family income.

What this means
A student from a low-income family who ranks 50th in the admission formula receives no institutional aid. A student from a wealthy family who ranks 1st receives the full tuition waiver. Aalto's aid is academic achievement aid, not financial need aid.
The philosophy
Finland's public university system is designed to be accessible through low fees (for EU/EEA students) and government student support (Kela), rather than through institutional need-based aid. Aalto's merit scholarship is an additional layer to attract the highest-achieving international students.
What 'scholarship' means at Aalto
The Aalto University Excellence Scholarship is a tuition fee waiver, not a cash grant. It removes the annual tuition fee for the duration of the bachelor's or master's programme (conditional on annual progress). It does not cover housing, food, or personal expenses.

External Funding

External Scholarships for Aalto Students

Several external and partner scholarships are available to Aalto students, providing additional funding for specific nationalities or programmes.

Pekka Mattila Excellence Scholarship
€3,000 relocation grant for students admitted to the School of Business Master's Programme in Marketing or International Management. Cannot be combined with the Aalto Excellence Scholarship.
Fulbright-Aalto University Graduate Award
For US citizens applying to Aalto master's programmes. Provides a generous living allowance and support services. Dual application required to both Fulbright Finland and Aalto.
FUNED (Mexico)
25% tuition fee reduction for up to four Mexican citizens per year in Aalto master's programmes. Applied as a tuition discount, not a cash award.
COLFUTURO (Colombia)
25% tuition fee reduction for up to four Colombian citizens per year in Aalto master's programmes.
Home-country government scholarships
Many governments offer scholarships for citizens studying at ranked European universities. Check your country's national scholarship authority — relevant for students from UAE, Saudi Arabia, India (ICCR), and many others.
Scholarship stacking: External scholarships at Aalto are generally not combined with the Aalto Excellence Scholarship. Confirm the stacking policy with Aalto Student Services when applying for any external award.
TYCHR maintains awareness of the major country-specific scholarship programmes relevant to Aalto. As part of every full admissions programme, TYCHR identifies external funding opportunities relevant to the student's nationality and intended programme.

Student Finance

Loans and Student Finance at Aalto — The Finnish System

Finland does not operate a US-style student loan system tied to universities. Instead, the Finnish national student support system (Kela) provides a study grant and a government-guaranteed student loan to eligible students — including international students with a Finnish residence permit.

Kela study grant (opintoraha)
A monthly living allowance paid to eligible students studying full-time in Finland. Available to international students who hold a Finnish residence permit. The exact amount depends on housing situation and family income (for students under 18). Confirm eligibility with Kela after arrival.
Government-guaranteed student loan (opintolaina)
Finland offers a state-guaranteed student loan through commercial banks for eligible students studying in Finland. The loan amount varies by year of study. International students with a Finnish residence permit are generally eligible. The loan carries relatively low interest rates.
No Aalto institutional loan
Aalto University does not provide institutional student loans. The university's aid is entirely in the form of tuition fee waivers (scholarships). Students requiring financial support beyond the scholarship must access Finland's Kela system or external financing.
Practical impact
International students at Aalto who hold a Finnish residence permit and receive the Kela study grant + government loan can typically cover most of their living costs (estimated €11,000–13,000/year) through these sources, significantly reducing the financial burden of the degree.

Student Employment

Working While Studying at Aalto — What to Expect

Aalto does not include a mandatory work component in its aid packages. However, many Aalto students work part-time alongside their studies — both for income and for career development. The Espoo/Helsinki area offers strong student employment opportunities, particularly in tech, design, and retail.

  • Research assistant positions in Aalto faculty labs (paid by research funding, not financial aid package)
  • Teaching assistant roles in courses (typically available from Year 2)
  • Student union (AYY) activities and event organisation
  • Part-time roles in the Helsinki/Espoo tech sector (startups, consulting, design studios)
  • Aalto Startup Sauna and Design Factory project collaborations (often paid)
  • Service sector employment in Espoo/Helsinki (retail, hospitality, delivery)
Non-EU/EEA students with a Finnish residence permit can typically work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year without restrictions, and full-time during vacations. EU/EEA students have no working hour restrictions. Check your specific residence permit conditions with the Finnish Immigration Service (Migri).
A part-time tech job in the Helsinki area typically pays €15–20/hour, making 15–20 hours/week (€900–1,600/month) a meaningful contribution to living costs. Aalto's strong industry connections mean research and project work often leads directly to part-time employment offers.
Student work is entirely voluntary at Aalto — it is not built into financial aid packages. Students choose to work based on financial need and career development goals. Aalto's Career Design Lab and the Aalto International Talent Program connect students with relevant employers.

For EU/EEA students, Aalto is among the most financially advantageous world-class universities globally. For non-EU/EEA students, Aalto's total cost (with scholarship) is comparable to other Nordic technical universities and substantially below equivalent US or UK institutions.
Unlike US need-aware schools, Aalto's admission process does not consider ability to pay. Financial circumstances do not affect admission — only academic performance in the scoring formula.

Cost Analysis

Aalto vs. Alternatives — What You Actually Pay

For EU/EEA students, Aalto is among the cheapest world-ranked research universities on earth. For non-EU/EEA students with the Excellence Scholarship, the 4-year cost is comparable to a moderate public university in many countries — while the academic and career outcomes are at the level of the world's top 110 universities.

Scholarship Appeals

Appealing a Scholarship Decision at Aalto — When and How

Aalto's Excellence Scholarship is awarded based on the admission formula ranking. There is no formal need-based appeal process. However, students who believe there was an error in their admission score calculation, or whose scholarship was not continued due to extenuating circumstances, may contact Aalto Student Services.

Aalto's scholarship is merit-based and formula-driven. Appeals on the grounds of financial need (rather than calculation error or extenuating circumstances) are not part of the system. Students with significant financial need who do not receive the Excellence Scholarship should explore Kela student support and external scholarships as the primary additional funding sources.

When To Appeal

  • You believe there was a calculation error in your admission formula score
  • Your scholarship was not renewed due to extenuating circumstances (illness, family crisis) that affected your study progress
  • Your scholarship status changed due to a residence permit change and you believe you qualify for the Reserve Scholarship

How To Appeal

  • Contact Aalto Student Services (studentservices@aalto.fi) in writing
  • Explain the specific circumstances clearly and provide documentation
  • For medical or personal circumstances affecting scholarship renewal, provide supporting medical or official documentation
  • Contact tuitionfees@aalto.fi for fee-specific queries
Aalto's Student Services team reviews individual cases. Response times vary. There is no published timeline for appeal decisions.

The scholarship is awarded to highest-ranked admitted students. Optimise your admission formula score — particularly in mathematics and sciences — to maximise your scholarship prospects. Run the IB vs SAT/ACT route comparison to find your highest possible score.
Apply and check scholarship outcome
Timeframe: Grade 12, January–August
Submit your application in January. Admission results including scholarship decisions are typically released in July–August. If you receive a scholarship: accept by the deadline to confirm. If not: assess alternative funding (Kela, external scholarships, part-time work).
Set up Finnish banking and Kela
Timeframe: Upon arrival
International students with a Finnish residence permit should register with the Finnish Population Register (DVV) and apply to Kela for study support. Opening a Finnish bank account is required for Kela payments.
Annual scholarship renewal
Timeframe: Each academic year
Excellence Scholarship is renewed subject to completing minimum 45 ECTS credits per year. Monitor your study progress and contact Student Services immediately if circumstances arise that may affect your progress.

Application Strategy

Aalto University Application — Everything You Need to Know.

Aalto does not use application essays for its Science & Technology or Business programmes — admission is formula-based on grades and SAT/ACT scores. The Design & Media programme uses creative task assignments. This guide explains what Aalto's application actually requires, and how to approach it strategically.

Requirement Overview

Aalto Application Requirements — The Full Picture

Aalto's English-taught bachelor's programmes use Finland's Studyinfo national application portal. Unlike US or UK universities, Aalto does not require personal statements, references, or extracurricular documentation for most programmes. The application is academic credentials only.

Required Items

RequiredStudyinfo Application
Word Count: No essays
Submitted through studyinfo.fi. Up to three study options per application. No written statements required.
RequiredAcademic Transcripts / Diploma
Word Count: Official documents
Official upper secondary school diploma or ongoing studies certificate. Final-year students submit final results later.
Required (Sci & Tech / Business)SAT/ACT Score OR IB/EB Grades
Word Count: Choose one route

Application Tasks

Aalto Application Tasks — By Programme Type

There are no common application essay prompts for Aalto. The 'application tasks' vary entirely by programme type — from no written materials at all (Science & Tech, Business) to creative assignment tasks (Design & Media).

FORMULA-BASED ONLYScience & Technology Programmes — No Written Tasks
Official Text: No personal statement, motivational letter, or written essays are required. Admission is based entirely on the grade-to-points formula (IB/EB/FM/DIA grades or SAT/ACT scores). The application consists of submitting official documents via Studyinfo.
Strategic Guide: Your strategy is entirely academic: optimise your admission formula score. Choose the IB-grade or SAT/ACT route that yields the higher score. Ensure all documents — transcripts, score reports — are ready to submit the moment the January window opens. There is nothing written to craft.

FORMULA-BASED ONLYBusiness Programmes (Economics, International Business) — No Written Tasks
Official Text: No personal statement or essay required. Admission is based on SAT/ACT scores (SAT 1200 / ACT 25 minimum) or IB/EB/FM/DIA grade conversion. International Business (Mikkeli) and Economics (Espoo) follow the same process.
Strategic Guide: Optimise for the SAT score if your IB profile in relevant subjects (Economics, Mathematics) converts to fewer admission points. The Business formula is less mathematically intensive than Science & Tech — verbal/reading performance matters more proportionally in the SAT.

CREATIVE TASK · STAGE 1Design & Media — Preliminary Assignment
Official Text: Aalto sets a specific creative brief announced at the opening of the January application window. The brief changes each year. Applicants complete and submit the assignment as part of their Studyinfo application by the closing deadline.
Strategic Guide: Study previous years' preliminary assignment briefs on Aalto's website. Understand the evaluation criteria: concept clarity, communication under constraints, originality, and design thinking — not technical execution. The brief is intentionally open-ended; the most common mistake is over-literal interpretation.
Source: https://www.aalto.fi/en/admission-services/apply-to-bachelors-programmes-in-english
CREATIVE TASK · STAGE 2Design & Media — Intake Assignment
Official Text: Shortlisted applicants are invited to complete an intake assignment — a second creative task completed under time constraints at Aalto's campus or remotely. This is followed by an in-person interview.
Strategic Guide: The intake assignment tests performance under pressure. Practice completing design briefs with a strict time limit. The interview that follows focuses on your thinking process: be prepared to articulate the conceptual logic behind your choices, not just describe what you made.

The Core Principle

Why Aalto Doesn't Use Essays — And What That Means for You

Aalto's rejection of personal statements and essays for most programmes is a deliberate philosophical choice: admission is transparent, measurable, and formula-based. The university believes that academic performance in a rigorous qualification system is the best predictor of success — not a carefully crafted narrative.

The strategic challenge at Aalto is entirely academic — not narrative. For Science & Technology and Business: your entire application strategy is grade optimisation and route selection (IB vs SAT/ACT). For Design & Media: your strategy is understanding the creative brief format and practising concept communication.

Looking For List

  • The highest admission formula score in your applicant cohort
  • For Design & Media: evidence of design thinking and conceptual communication in the assignment tasks
  • Genuine mathematical and scientific preparation (demonstrated by grades, not stated in an essay)
  • Meeting every document deadline precisely — Aalto is strict about incomplete applications

Tired Of List

  • There are no essays to be tired of — but there are applicants who prepare for the wrong things
  • Students who spend months crafting personal statements for Aalto instead of optimising their admission formula score
  • Design & Media applicants who submit technically elaborate preliminary assignments without clear conceptual communication
  • Applicants who miss the SAT score deadline because they didn't read the deadline carefully

Strategy by Programme

Application Strategy by Programme — Aalto's Three Tracks

Because Aalto's application process differs so fundamentally from US or UK universities, the right strategy depends entirely on which programme you are applying to.

GRADES + SAT/ACTScience & Technology Strategy
Official Text: Formula-based: IB/EB/FM/DIA grades or SAT/ACT scores converted to max 172.1 points.
Strategic Guide: Step 1: Calculate your admission score under both the IB-grade route and the SAT/ACT route. Step 2: Choose the route with the higher score. Step 3: Prepare all documents 3 months before the January window. Step 4: Apply on Day 1 of the window. There is no advantage to applying late — but missing the window means waiting a year.
GRADES + SAT/ACTBusiness Strategy
Official Text: Formula-based: similar to Science & Technology but with different subject weights and lower SAT/ACT minimums (SAT 1200 / ACT 25).
Strategic Guide: Business is less mathematically intensive in the formula — Economics, languages, and overall grade profile matter proportionally more. For students with IB Economics HL and strong language grades, the IB route may be stronger. Confirm your specific formula calculation for Business.
CREATIVE TASKS + INTERVIEWDesign & Media Strategy
Official Text: Multi-stage: preliminary assignment → shortlisting → intake assignment → interview.
Strategic Guide: Start researching previous Aalto preliminary assignment briefs 6 months before the January window. Practice completing design tasks with strict time limits. Work with a design mentor to develop your concept communication skills. An English language certificate (IELTS 6.5 / TOEFL 92 / Duolingo 120) must be in hand before applying.

Programme Selection Strategy

Choosing Your Aalto Study Options — The Decision That Shapes Your Application

Studyinfo allows you to apply to up to three study options. This is the equivalent of Aalto's 'essay topic choice' — the decision with the most strategic impact on your application.

Criteria

Rank your most likely-to-succeed option first
Studyinfo processes your three options independently — but put your strongest application (highest expected formula score relative to the programme) as your first choice. In practice, all three options are evaluated simultaneously.
Don't apply to Design & Media as a backup
Design & Media uses a completely different selection process (creative tasks, interview) — not the same formula as Science & Tech or Business. If you're not seriously prepared for the creative process, a Design & Media application as a third-choice backup wastes a slot and your preparation time.
Cross-school applications are valid
You can apply to programmes across different schools (e.g., Computer Engineering as first choice, Economics as second choice). Your academic profile and route selection may differ between choices — model each one separately.

Caution Topics

  • Applying to Design & Media without preparing the preliminary assignment — it will be incomplete or weak
  • Using all three slots on the same school/programme type — diversify to maximise your chances
  • Not checking the specific SAT/ACT minimums for each programme before deciding on the test route
TYCHR's Programme Selection Framework. TYCHR runs a formula modelling exercise for each applicant: we calculate your expected admission score for each programme you are considering, rank them by probability of admission, and advise on which three slots to use. This quantitative approach removes guesswork from one of the most consequential application decisions.

Common Pitfalls

Application Mistakes That Cost Aalto Applications — And How to Avoid Them

  • Missing the SAT/ACT score delivery deadline (typically January 29) because tests were booked too late — scores that arrive even one day after the deadline disqualify the route entirely.
  • Applying to Science & Technology via the IB grade route with a score below 33 or without meeting the subject minimums (math + chemistry/physics at grade 2 or above) — the application will be rejected as not meeting threshold requirements.
  • Submitting a Design & Media application without the English language certificate — Aalto is explicit that there are no exceptions, and a missing certificate makes the application incomplete.
  • Applying to Design & Media without studying previous years' preliminary assignment briefs — the format is highly specific and unpractised applicants produce generic work.
  • Choosing the wrong admission route without modelling the formula — some students score 15–20 more points on the non-obvious route, which can be the difference between admission and rejection in competitive programmes.
  • Waiting until the last day of the application window — while there is no advantage to applying on Day 1 for most programmes, last-day technical issues on Studyinfo (server load) have caused missed deadlines in previous cycles.
  • Assuming predicted IB grades are sufficient — Aalto's conditional admission requires final results by the summer document deadline. A significant drop from predicted to final grades can result in a rescinded offer.

Faqs

Do I need to write a personal statement for Aalto?+

No. Aalto's English-taught bachelor's programmes in Science & Technology and Business do not require personal statements, motivational letters, or any form of written narrative. Admission is purely formula-based on academic grades or SAT/ACT scores.

What is the preliminary assignment for Design & Media?+

Aalto sets a creative brief that is announced at the opening of the January application window — the specific brief changes each year. Applicants complete and submit the assignment as part of their Studyinfo application by the closing deadline. Study previous years' briefs to understand the format and evaluation criteria.

Is there an interview at Aalto?+

Only for Design & Media. Shortlisted candidates are invited to complete an intake assignment and then attend an in-person interview at Aalto's Otaniemi campus. Science & Technology and Business programmes have no interview component.

How should I use my three application slots on Studyinfo?+

Use the three slots strategically: your first choice should be the programme where your formula score is strongest relative to typical admission thresholds. Do not use all three slots on the same programme type — apply across schools if you have genuine interest in multiple fields. TYCHR can model your formula score for each programme to advise on optimal slot allocation.

Can I explain my grades or background in the Aalto application?+

No. Aalto's application has no free-text fields for context, explanation, or narrative. Extenuating circumstances affecting grades are not part of the admission formula. This is by design — Aalto's system is transparent and grade-based, without a holistic layer.

What if I miss the application window?+

Aalto admits to English-taught bachelor's programmes once per year. If you miss the January window, the next opportunity is the following January. There is no supplementary or late application process. Treat the window opening date as absolute.

Does Aalto consider extracurricular activities?+

No. The bachelor's programmes in English explicitly do not require or consider references or statements of extra-curricular activities. Extracurricular achievements, competitions, and activities play no role in Aalto's admission formula for Science & Technology or Business.

Should I contact Aalto before applying to express interest?+

It is not necessary and does not affect admission. Aalto's formula is blind to demonstrated interest. If you have a specific question about your qualification's eligibility or the application process, email admissions@aalto.fi — but do so to get an accurate answer, not to signal interest.
