IB DP English A: Language and Literature | SL & HL | Assessment & Exam Skills | The HL Essay (1,200–1,500 words)

📋 What You Will Learn

  • Define academic register and identify its six key markers in formal written English
  • Understand exactly how Criterion D (Language) rewards formal register in the HL Essay, Paper 1 and Paper 2
  • Master the three methods of embedding quotations — integrated syntax, colon lead-in, and block — and apply each to a literary or non-literary text
  • Understand referencing conventions (in-text citation and bibliography) at the level the HL Essay demands, including when sources are and are not required
  • Distinguish paraphrase, summary and direct quotation — and know when each is the stronger analytical choice
  • Recognise and avoid the forms of plagiarism (and self-plagiarism) that can cost marks or trigger IB malpractice proceedings

🔍 Guiding Question If the HL Essay is explicitly described as "a shorter extended essay" built around "a focused analytical argument," what does it mean in practice to write in an academic register — and how can you embed quotations and reference sources in a way that strengthens, rather than interrupts, your line of inquiry?

🌍 Why This Matters The HL Essay counts for 20% of your HL grade and is marked by an external IB examiner. Across Paper 1 and Paper 2, the Language criterion is equally present at /5: register is a mark-earning skill at every level of this course, and developing it now shapes how you write under exam conditions throughout the two years.
