IB DP Computer Science — A3 Databases — Database programming | HL | A3.3.5

📋 What You Will Learn

  • Describe what a database view is and construct one with CREATE VIEW
  • Distinguish virtual views from materialized (snapshot) views
  • Describe how views hide complexity, simplify queries and support data independence
  • Explain the consistency and performance trade-off between the two view types
  • Describe read-only versus updatable views, and views as a security mechanism

🪟 Why This Matters A view is a window cut into the database: each user sees exactly the slice shaped for them — the receptionist sees names and phone numbers, never salaries. A virtual view is a live window (always showing the current state); a materialized view is a photograph taken through it — fast to look at, but only as fresh as the last shot.
