A3.2.2 — Constructing Entity Relationship Diagrams (ERDs)

Preview

IB DP Computer Science — A3 Databases — Database design | SL | A3.2.2

📋 What You Will Learn

  • Explain the significance of ERDs in crafting organized, efficient database designs for specific applications
  • Identify entities, attributes and the relationships between entities in a scenario
  • Define cardinality and modality and read/write crow's foot notation for both
  • Construct a complete ERD from a written scenario, step by step
  • Resolve a many-to-many relationship with an associative (junction) entity

🗺️ Why This Matters Nobody builds a house straight from a conversation — they draw a plan first, argue over it cheaply on paper, and only then build. An ERD is the database's floor plan: it exposes missing entities, impossible relationships and hidden many-to-manys before a single table exists, when mistakes cost minutes instead of a migration.

Why ERDs Matter (Their Significance)

  • An ERD is the standard diagram of the conceptual/logical design : the entities a specific
