Preview

IB DP Computer Science — A3 Databases — Alternative databases and data warehouses | HL | A3.4.3

📋 What You Will Learn

  • Explain what online analytical processing (OLAP) is and how it differs from transaction processing
  • Describe the OLAP cube: dimensions, measures, and the operations roll-up, drill-down, slice, dice and pivot
  • Work each OLAP operation on a concrete sales cube with real numbers
  • Explain the six data-mining techniques: classification, clustering, regression, association rule discovery, sequential pattern discovery, anomaly detection
  • Calculate support and confidence for an association rule
  • Explain how OLAP and data mining together turn warehouse data into business intelligence

🧊 Why This Matters Think of a company's sales figures as a Rubik's cube: one axis is product , one is region , one is time . OLAP is the skill of turning, slicing and zooming that cube to answer "how much, where, when?" instantly. Data mining goes further — it studies the cube's patterns and tells you something you never thought to ask.

Two Tools, One Goal

  • Both run on the data warehouse
