Real-World Introduction
Many real-world processes — the spread of an infectious disease, the cooling of a cup of coffee, the charging of a capacitor — are governed by differential equations. In most of these cases, the equation can be written down immediately from physical laws, but finding an exact algebraic solution is either impossible or extremely difficult.
Epidemiologists modelling the early spread of COVID-19 used differential equations of the form \( \frac{dI}{dt} = \beta SI - \gamma I \), where \( I \) is the number of infected individuals. No simple closed-form solution exists for this system, yet health authorities needed numerical predictions within days. Euler's method — and its more sophisticated descendants — provided those predictions.
🌍 Why This Matters Slope fields and Euler's method are the entry point to numerical analysis: the branch of mathematics that powers weather forecasting, aircraft design, and financial risk modelling. Every time a computer simulates a physical system, it is applying an iterative numerical method closely related to Euler's method.
Core Concepts & Definitions
A first-order differential equation specifies the rate of change of a quantity at every point in the \( xy \)-plane. Before solving such an equation, it is useful to visualise what the solutions look like — without doing any algebra at all. This is the purpose of a slope field.
📖 Key Definition — Slope Field (Direction Field) A slope field for the differential equation \( \dfrac{dy}{dx} = f(x, y) \) is a diagram in which a short line segment is drawn at each point \( (x, y) \) with gradient equal to \( f(x, y) \). The collection of all such segments shows the direction a solution curve must travel through every point of the plane.
Each line segment in a slope field is a tiny piece of the tangent to a solution curve. A solution curve is a function \( y = g(x) \) whose
