🔍 Guiding Question When a business needs money to grow or survive, should it look inward first — and what are the real costs of funding itself?
🌍 Why This Matters In 2023, Apple Inc. held over $160 billion in retained earnings and cash equivalents, funding billions of dollars in share buybacks and R&D without borrowing a cent. For most businesses, the decision of whether to use internal funds or seek outside finance is one of the most consequential they will ever make — it shapes ownership, risk, and long-term strategy.
What Is Finance — and Why Does It Matter?
Every business activity — hiring staff, buying equipment, launching a product, surviving a slow month — requires money. Finance is the fuel. The question is always: where does that fuel come from, and at what cost?
Sources of finance are divided into two broad categories: internal (generated from within the business) and external (raised from outside parties). This note focuses entirely on internal sources.
📘 Internal Sources of Finance Funds generated from within the business itself, without recourse to outside lenders or investors. They do not create new obligations to third parties and do not dilute ownership.
💡 Why Internal First?
- No interest payments — reduces financial risk.
- No loss of control — ownership structure is unchanged.
- Faster to access — no application process or approval delays.
- Signals financial health to external stakeholders when used confidently.
The Main Internal Sources of Finance
There are three principal internal sources examined in the IB Business Management course: retained profit, sale of assets, and working capital management (including stock reduction and debt collection). Each works differently and suits different business situations.
1. Retained Profit
When a business earns a profit, it faces a choice: distribute it to owners (as dividends or drawings) or keep it inside the business to fund future activity. The portion kept is called retained profit — the single most important internal source of finance for established businesses.
📘 Retained Profit The net profit
